A friend told me about free AOL. I didn't have cable or high speed service so I signed up for the $9.99 monthly rate. Apparently what I had signed up for TOP Speed which required high speed or cable (which I thought was supposed to be free). This service had limited dial-up minutes. I didn't realize the problem until I received a pop up stating I had used up all of my dial-up minutes. When I checked my account I noticed that I was charged an extra $35 for using dial up service. When I inquired they offered to switch me to the plan that had unlimited dial-up which is also $9.99. This unlimited dial-up plan comes with unlimited high speed minutes. When I asked for a credit they said they couldn't credit my account. They informed me that the new plan would start immediately. I signed off AOL, signed back in and pulled up my account. They charged me for the time it took to contact them to switch the plan.

I HAD NO QUARREL WITH THE PRICE, BUT WHENEVER I HAD A PROBLEM, I COULD NOT COMMUNICATE WITH THE CUSTOMER SERVICE REPS BECAUSE THEY WERE FROM ANOTHER COUNTRY & ENGLISH WAS NOT THEIR PRIMARY LANGUAGE. THE QUALITY WAS FINE & I LIKED THE HOME PAGE, BUT DEALING WITH ISSUES IS WHAT MADE ME CANCEL.

I HAD 'FREE' SERVICE FOR 1 YEAR WITH MY GATEWAY PURCHASE. I CANCELLED SERVICE TWO MONTHS BEFORE THE END DATE AND SIGNED UP WITH ANOTHER INTERNET PROVIDER. AOL CHARGED MY WIFE'S CREDIT CARD AFTER WE CALLED TO CANCEL, SAYING WE FAILED TO GET A CANCELLATION NUMBER. I SPOKE WITH A 'CUSTOMER SERVICE MANAGER,' AND HE WOULD ONLY REFUND ONE MONTH OF SERVICE. I ASKED HIM WHY HE WOULD YOU ONLY TAKE OFF ONE MONTH WHEN I CANCELLED BEFORE THE END OF THE 'FREE' TRIAL. WHEN I'VE SHARED THIS STORY WITH FRIENDS AND FAMILY, THEY SAY, 'YEA, AOL'S KNOWN FOR THAT'. WELL I DON'T ACCEPT IT AND I'VE TOLD ALL OF MY FRIENDS AND NOW 'THE LIST'. BEWARE OF THE FREE AOL TRIAL - YOU WILL END UP PAYING SOMETHING. TRUST ME. ASK EVERYONE YOU KNOW.
