The plumber spent about twenty minutes cleaning out the drain and then another twenty putting in a new backwater valve. I wasn't familiar with backwater valves and because I'm a DIY kind of guy I like to know as much as I can about these things. I peppered him with questions about the valve and the drain system. He didn't put some effort into explaining it but not much.
After he cleaned the drain, I asked him how much the valve was going to cost before he replaced it. He said the rate was $80 an hour, and the part was about $20. He thought it would take him about an hour to complete.
It took him twenty minutes. He did a nice job of making sure the drain worked right when he was done. When he came back from his van, I got a bill for a $177.
"What's this $65 service charge?" I asked.
"That's what it costs just for us to show up at your door," he said. "He should have told you that on the phone. It's standard."
"Well, he didn't." I said. "And I don't know if that's standard. A lot of places give free estimates."
"Aw, those places all rip you off on the work. They get you on the back end."
He may be right about that. But at $177 for less than forty minutes of work and a $20 part, they were really the same price as the "rip off" places he was talking about.
