DO NOT GO TO THIS CLINIC! The factory-like atmosphere demotes individuals to cogs in a wheel, the 2-3 hours for each appointment are absurd, and the staff, although superficially friendly, are demeaning. When I apparently didn't hear my name being called from the waiting room, the assistant made a derogatory remark to someone she was training, saying, "You have to get really close to the TV if you want them to hear you." Although I was sitting close to the TV, the reason I may not have heard her was the insufferable noise employees made, talking loudly to each other, and yelling unnecessarily loudly to call patients, who all sat in near absolute silence.
When I was finally called in to an exam room, nearly 2 hours after I arrived, and after a short vision test and dilation, it was evident the assistant had no idea why I was there, but insisted on talking over every single answer I tried to give her as she fired off questions that had no bearing whatsoever on today's visit. I unfortunately told her, in answer to one of her questions, that I was interested, eventually, in getting a cataract removed from my right eye. Despite my attempt to re-direct her to the initial purpose of today's visit, she honed in on the cataract removal, subsequently telling me I was not a candidate for the surgery, since my vision in that eye was " correctable to 20/25" with glasses. I knew that was incorrect, as my previous eye doctor had yearly recommended removal of the cataract, telling me that it was impossible to correct the vision in that eye effectively until the cataract was removed. Despite any attempt on my part to explain to the assistant that her information must be mistaken, she continued to stridently insist on interrupting every sentence I started.
When Dr. Box finally came in, seeing she was questioning me, he told her he could come back in a few minutes. It was nearly 6:00 pm, and I said that I would like to talk to him instead. He examined my left and right eyes, and immediately said I was a candidate for cataract removal. Totally confused by now, when I told him (for clarification purposes only) the assistant had repeatedly told me I wasn't, and quoted the things she had said to me, she interrupted again to say, "That's not what I said!". I asked if it was possible to have another assistant, but Dr. Box said she was the best in their office (!!), that they worked as a team, and he was unwilling to do my cataract surgery!
When I walked to the lobby and up to the desk and asked to check out, the assistant there gave me a withering look, and told me to sit down, that she was helping another patient--who just then walked up behind me.
There is absolutely nothing professional or truly patient-friendly about this assembly-line shop pretending to be a professional clinic. I cannot recommend a single thing about it. After waiting patiently an interminable amount of time in the waiting room, when I was finally called to an exam room, they rushed the actual appointment, apparently so they could go home. My last appointment there a few weeks ago took over three hours.. A truly horrible experience!
The good news is that I can surely find an eye doctor of equal or greater expertise who won't keep me waiting for 2-3 hours, with staff members who treat patients with respect.
Due to IEC's error in not scheduling me more than 365 days apart, my insurance wouldn't cover my exam. Even after talking to insurance, there was nothing they could do to override the 15 hours difference. But then again it wasn't insurance's fault, it was IEC's.
IEC did nothing to accommodate me for their error. Oh, they were willing to go ahead and see me, but at my expense when it would be filed as medical vs. vision; therefore I'd be eating the increased charge. From a customer perspective, they should have acknowledged it was their error, and agreed to see me and eat the differential exam charge. Instead, I have to take another day off work and go back and start the process all over again. UGH!
When checking out, lady took time to check if I had any future appointments. Location in Greenwood, IN is easy to get to. Waiting area pleasant, cold drinking water available, restrooms clean. Same is true for Plainfield location, except no restroom available in office. They are located down the hall from office. Hot drinks and cold water are made available.
I have had minor complaints with the technical staff and financial consultant in the Plainfield office. I would overlook these if I had received the results I had paid for and was promised. My main complaint, and this is a significant one, was not being told of possible complications. When I asked what if the Crystalens didn't work, I was told they could be fine tuned and tweaked to get better results.
On more than one occasion, I was told something by the technical staff that the doctor contradicted. I was told by tech staff that I had jeopardized my post op results by not following post op directions. I was suppose to only wear reading glasses. This was impossible to do, since blood vessels had been broken in my eye during surgery, preventing me from seeing out of my right eye. Left presurgery eye was very myopic. Had to wear my regular eyeglasses just to function. I mentioned my extremely bloodshot eye after the surgery. Was told this was normal. Never having had cataract surgery before, I didn't know this was not normal. Only had minor redness after lt eye surgery done later. This was not the only time I was told something different by staff from doctor. Was told lenses were intentionally placed in different location in eyes to get different levels of correction. Near vision in lt eye, far vision in rt eye. Doctor said that wasn't true. Lenses just settled in differentl depths in each eye. Was told presurgery that I would be able to see at varying distances in both eyes so I wouldn't need trifocals. Later my research revealed that placing lenses at different eye depths was done to accomplish near and far vision with eyes working together. Interesting, who to believe?
Was chastised by office consultant when I mentioned techs had difficulty performing some of the pre surgery testing. I was concerned the surgery would be more difficult for the same reasons. She stated the techs didn't have any problems with the testing. I knew otherwise but didn't want to argue. To her credit she did call me later and apologize, saying she didn't have my chart in front of her at that time. She still shouldn't have just assumed I didn't know what I was talking about.
The final straw occurred after the doctor prescribed eye glasses, (remember, I paid $6,000.00 to not have to wear glasses). When I picked them up, I was seeing double with them. The optician acted like I should accept them anyway. She told me to not wear them when driving, the very reason they were being prescribed. She said the prescription was correct and she couldn't check with the doctor until after the weekend. I didn't take or pay for them. I was called on Monday and ever effort was made to correct the problem. I was not charged for them or eye glasses later prescribed. I was upset by the optician's attitude. I received no apology or any reasurances the problem would be rectified from her. I told the doctor's assistant, Kim, that I didn't want any further dealings with the optician ( I have never done that before, anywhere). Kim fitted me with the redone glasses. That lasted for awhile, The optician has called me a few times since.
Again these issues would have been forgotten and forgiven if I had been pleased with my surgery. As it stands now, I would not have paid extra for the Cystalens and toric lenses. I would even have put off the cataract surgery as long as I could have. I wish I had trusted my instincts and not have gotten in such a hurry. I had met my medical deductible and wanted the surgery done by the end of the year. Also while traveling, I discovered that I could no longer drive at night, especially when it's raining. Sadly, my night driving is still severely limited. I spent $6,000.00 to save $600.00. and still can't see well at night or see as well as I did with glasses? Not smart.
Just because the surgery and lenses didn't work for me, doesn't mean it won't work for others. Get a 2nd and even a 3rd opinion first. Do your research, Google complications of cataract surgery, in addition to just cataract surgery. Also check on You Tube. Don't get into a hurry and most of all, trust your instincts
I don't know if having an evening appointment made the scheduling worse, or maybe they were short-handed on doctors that day, but I will go back and give them another try.
It is a wonderful clinic but has very long waits. This is probably unavoidable since they see so many Medicare patients which I am grateful for. You just have to plan on it taking a long time.
I plan to always use them for my eye care needs.
