Have been around construction all my life, and it was nice to hire someone who did everything he said he would when he said he would. Told me when I hired him, when he would be there, how long it would take and did everything I asked. I was not on site but he called me with any question.
He even mopped my floor at the end.
"Thank you for your business!!"
"Thank you for your business!"
A competitor told us $1800 to repair or if I wanted to replace the entire line, $2400 (aprox 100 feet). Matt asked and I told him these numbers (dumb, I know. In the future each bid will be blind). Matt submitted a proposal for $1800 for repair or if I wanted to replace the entire line, $2800. Considering he scoped the line for free, (that's what I was told), and that these numbers were close to others, I gave them the job and opted for the repair ($1800 for aprox 40 feet of line).
I told him that I would like to be there during the repair. He told me that wouldn't be necessary and if I had to work I didn't need to be there. (I didn't think anything of this at the time). I said that I had never had this type of work done and that I was more curious than anything. I showed up about 2 hours into the work and they showed me the trench. At this point, the grade(drop) was worse than they expected and that 20 more feet of line was necessary (the camera equipment for this type of work gives
length and depth, I'm curious as to why this was a surprise). So the estimate went to half way between the previous repair estimate of $1800 and replacing the whole line for $2800. Putting it at $2300, at this point Matt quickly said 2500 but his
dad did the math and confirmed it would actually be $2300. I had already mentioned that I wanted the line properly bedded with gravel. Matt offered to take pictures of everything so I decided not to stay for the entire job. I told him via text I needed pictures of ALL of the new line after being bedded in gravel as well as after being buried. He replied "You got it". Five o'clock rolled around and I received a text stating from Matt, "All done and hooked up. Had to go another 25' back to get the grade right. Looks good". I was shocked, No call was ever made to dothis additional work. I was not happy but replied that I still needed the pictures, especially of the extra footage I was not able to see. I received pictures of almost every angle with the exception of 20 or so feet of the last trench. A picture of the last tie in (about 5 feet was received) but the other 20 feet was obviously missing. I asked about this and Matt attempted to convince me that the 2nd to last picture received was part of the last trench, (I added the red circles) it obviously is a different picture of the same trench, the trench that was already dug when I was present. This comes across as highly deceitful, it makes me question whether or not the last tie in picture was even our line to begin with, there's no context (background) in the picture to convince me it's even on our property. The last 20 or so feet of this job was never photographed, either due to 1. incompetence with taking the pictures (I doubt, considering every other angle/trench was captured), 2. the extra length was never necessary. or 3. there wasn't enoughmgravel to bed the extra length properly. When I left the job site Matt specifically asked if I was going to return that day, I told him no. I thought this was an odd question to ask, now I know why.
When I started asking questions over the phone about why the last trench wasn't photographed Matt asked why I didn't stay. Well, I guess I trusted him to take ALL the pictures of the work like he offered, especially this last amount of footage that I was never able to see. Otherwise I would have stayed.
The straw that broke the camel's back was on the final call Matt said the job ended up at $2500. When I received the bill it was for $2540. So it went from $1800, to $2300, to $2500 (without any notice to me until the job was complete) to an additional $40. Bid on a job and end up with 40% more, not a bad business model. (the last $40 was eventually waived)
I did my research and for this type of work the amount paid is average for the length of pipe (if I can believe the work was necessary and done as requested, I cannot) I had only 2 simple requests for this repair, pictures of pipe bedded on gravel and
pictures after buried. Since the extra amount I paid was based on getting pictures and that this contractor went out of their way to not provide a picture of the last portion of work I have to rate this job an F. I'm tired of paying this type of money and somehow contractors believe they do not have to do what the customer requests(especially with such a simple request), never mind the fact that in this situation a picture of the 20 + extra feet of pipe that was supposedly necessary was intentionally left out.
There was a complaint that they "under bid" this job, which I find amazing considering the final amount paid was 40% more than the repair bid. I can't help but believe this was under bid with the sole intent of reaching $2500 once the job was underway.
I can submit a backed up text log substantiating my experience if necessary.
Given my experience I'm wondering if the other reviews are from family and/or friends.
UPDATE: Since they felt the need to lie in their response I'm obligated to respond.
They stated, " He agreed and paid the bill but now several months later is unhappy." This implies that because I
paid I was happy and that my review somehow blindsided them. Funny, considering the memo on their check
clearly stated "DO NOT REHIRE!!!". My last text also makes it perfectly clear how "happy" I was, I mentioned everything I was ticked about, the $40 was waived, all other issues were ignored. My review was written within 5 days of last contact After my text no further contact from them was ever attempted, hence the reason for the memo note, among other things. Just because
I just recently posted this review means nothing.
My biggest issue with their response is the BOLD FACED LIE. They state " He was unhappy that we did not take this
picture so we offered to run the camera into the new line to show him for free. He declined this offer. " NO SUCH OFFER WAS EVER GIVEN EITHER VIA TEXT, EMAIL, OR VERBALLY. If I had a way to literally scream LYING LIARS on a website post I would. The fact they think it's ok to post this lie on this forum amazes me. Someone there needs to find time for an ethics course or two.
Let me reiterate, ALL that was requested was photos of the pipe properly bedded in gravel and then
buried. Time required, probably 1 to 2 minutes. Amazingly the extra 20+ feet that was "necessary", and that I was unable to witness, was left out. Anyone in their right mind would be suspicious. If I was a contractor (stereotyped similar to
a used car sales man) I would do what it takes to appear above reproach. Especially when all the
customer was asking for was freaking pictures of everything, COME ON!
" The additional repair would have normally cost $2,800.00 but we only charged him $2,500.00." Not a good idea to post
this comment considering the proposal
"We are very disappointed that this customer was unhappy. Anytime a repair is underground there is always room for unexpected discoveries upon excavation. We told him up front that the minimum charge would be $1,800.00 to repair his sewer line properly. Once we excavated the area, we realized that the sewer line went uphill 4” from the home and then level away from the home 30’. In order to repair the line properly we knew this would have to be replaced at a grade that fell downhill from the home. We communicated this to [member name removed] and told him the repair would probably be $2,300 but would not exceed $2,500. He agreed to this based on our conversation. We did send [member name removed] pictures of the trenching but filled up the area before taking a picture of the additional 25’ that we had to install. He was unhappy that we did not take this picture so we offered to run the camera into the new line to show him for free. He declined this offer. The additional repair would have normally cost $2,800.00 but we only charged him $2,500.00. He agreed and paid the bill but now several months later is unhappy. We are not sure why he believes that we did a bad job. We believe that we repaired the line properly and that he should have no further problems. We communicated with him throughout the entire repair including the additional costs. We repaired the line as it should be and he should have no further problems. We believe that it is unfair to say that the majority of our reviews which are outstanding must be from friends and family. This is not a true statement and very unfair to us. We strive to do an outstanding job on every project and we go over and above to make all of our customers happy. We believe we gave the same outstanding service to this project as well."
"Thank you so much for your business. We appreciate your positive feedback!"
"Thanks (removed member name)! It was a pleasure to work with you."
The floor and 95% of the shower/tub area had been tiled by my original contractor. So, Matt and Steve needed to do the following to finish the BR:
Install new cabinet Set and hardware
Relocate electrical for the vanity light
Replace plugs and switches
Install new Bath fan
Replace Can Light trim with LED trim
Install new cast stone double sink vanity top
Install Faucets
Complete Plumbing connections
Install mirrors
Drywall repairs and paint entire BR
Install and finish Baseboard and shoe molding to match
Repair carpet to tile transition
Re-install Toilet
Install new shower curtain rod
Reset tile and touch-up grout as needed
Matt and Steve were able to come out within a few weeks and complete everything except for the cabinet and vanity as they had just been ordered. They were both very personable, thorough, and attentive in completing my BR. Once my cabinet and vanity arrived, it was also installed without any complaints and my BR was finally completed. Words can't express how grateful I am that they were able to turn my nightmare re-model around so quickly. My BR looks absolutely beautiful. I have already hired them for additional work.
"Customer, As I'm sure you recall, we discussed many times that we would accept the payment that your insurance approved for your water loss/dry out. As we did and you were responsible for your deductible. You agreed to this by signing our proposal. Additionally, the pluming company replaced your pumps and you paid them upon completion of the repairs. Your insurance agent explained to you several times that the repair cost that caused the damage is not covered in your policy, they cover the damages caused by the failure. Additionally, you signed our final invoice approving our work and then failed to pay us in full as we had to bill you several times working with you on a payment schedule. Another reminder, we reduced our charges to help cover your deductible. Bottom line...We went went over and above and we do not deserve a negative comment regarding our price. What you have stated in false and we will looking forward to comment revision."
