Bill's Painting/Golden Painting Inc's work is excellent. They were fast and they do a wonderful job. They were here when they said they'd be and got it done promptly. The staff was well groomed, polite, and took a moment to chat. I had a good time.

The work went very well, overall; we are very pleased with both the quality of the work and the results and happy we had Golden Painting do this project for us.

Exterior Painting
Fall of 2009, after interviewing eight painting companies (all highly recommended through Angie?s List) we selected Golden Painting Company. Mr. Golden convinced us of his knowledge and care of old houses, which ours was in need of. We discussed and he recommended, extensive scraping (he demonstrated how he would scrape between the lap joints to remove years of build up), caulking and priming before he and his crew would paint. We also explained that we wanted to have the three colors of our house remain and expressly conveyed that it should have the same characteristic detail. We were in agreement of his method and hired Golden Painting Company. Due some other home repairs we needed to delay the painting of our house to the following spring 2010. We apologized to Mr. Golden and said we would call and schedule another appointment. Early spring 2010 we called Mr. Golden as we promised and prior to starting the project we met with him again to go over all of the details (a refresher for both parties) and for him to resubmit his pricing to account for any increases in labor or supplies. He held his original pricing and started the project later in March. I expressed my desire to be present during the work on our house and as I am on call 24/7, I provided my phone number. On the second day of the project, I spoke to Mr. Golden regarding the need for more scraping. I expressed my concern that it wasn?t quite as extensive as we had discussed. He disagreed and continued. On the third day, I noticed most of the house had final coat of paint, but his crew had not done any of the agreed scraping of all of the lap joints and were painting over loose paint. The next day I realized Mr. Golden and his crew had painted all of the trim and painted all of the trim edges to match the body of the house, not returning them to the original look of matching the trim color, which he corrected after disagreeing and stating that we were picky. On the forth day, the project was coming to a close so my wife and I both took a final look at the work and created a small punch list and forwarded it to Mr. Golden so he could finish everything on his final day. The punch list consisted of painting the inside trim of the windows, re-working two wooden storm windows so that they would seat properly on the windows, unsticking all of the windows that were painted and addressing our concerns of the scraping that wasn?t completed. Mr. Golden agreed to all but the scraping stating that he performed all of the scraping that was agreed upon and that he would cover any issue as it arose as warranty, but was not going to solve the issue at this point. While Mr. Golden and crew were working one of the storm windows, my wife and I had to listen to him and his crew commenting on how picky we were and how he was going above his scope, but he never spoke directly to us. And, during the unsticking of the kitchen window, a crew member cracked the window pane, which he did later replace. Last month, I found several butt joints that he had caulked had opened and several cracks in two other pieces of siding had re-opened. I emailed Mr. Golden and asked that he take a look as part of his warranty. He came out and basically stated that it was out of his control and it was weather related so he recommended that I contact the Porter Paint Rep. The rep came out the very next day and made a recommendation and could not understand way Mr. Golden wouldn?t resolve this issue. I emailed Mr. Golden the recommendations from the Porter Paint rep. (which was to use a specific caulk) and asked that he let us know when he was going to resolve the caulking issues. His response was he would be out the following Wednesday. I made arrangements to be home, but two days prior Mr. Golden came by without our knowledge and re-caulked. The workmanship was appalling. The caulk was smeared and globbed. Furthermore, we are unable to verify he used the recommended caulk. When I phoned Mr. Golden to voice my new concerns about the caulking, he basically argued that this is how professionals caulk and that he was trying to overlap the caulking on the wood so that it would be less likely to fail in the future. I disagreed and asked that he re-do it. On the phone, me stated that he would re-do the work, but later that evening he emailed stating that he would no longer stand behind his work and that he would not honor his warranty. We expected the quality of work that Mr. Golden stated and the work promised in our agreement. Now, we have thick smears of caulking and unpainted areas on our house and are not sure how to proceed and to resolve this.
Response from BILL'S PAINTING/GOLDEN PAINTING INC
"I made several attempts to please him to replacing a window we did not break, to palm sanding and repainting 2 storms that needed to be replaced. I also went out and caulked on a Mon. with the caulk he wanted as recommended by my paint rep. He accused me of trespassing with a few other things that were not true. Everything that I told him in a professional manner he didn't agree with so I told him to contact Mr. Hopp from Porter. With the excessive heat we had this summer his siding contracted approx. 1/4 to 1/2 inch which is not my fault. I tried to do all that I could to please this customer to no avail. There is only about 1/2 hour or less of work left, not $500 worth. Bill Golden-Owner"

This report concerns a job done in the fall of 2009. I had decided to let it go, but Angie's List won't leave me alone about it! So, here it is! A couple of remarks to qualify this review: For the, "Would you hire again" question, I would have checked the "MAYBE" box if one existed. I liked Bill and I believed he would do a good job. Also, a reminder to everyone that "C" = Average in most school systems... and that's what I'm going by. I could do a "C" job myself. But that's why I like to hire people who can do an "A" job. At first glance, the fence looked really good after it was stained. 70% of it was really good! After a couple of days... drying time I suppose... much of the fence had light and dark spots with broad strokes and short strokes showing very clearly. In other words: uneven application. I was concerned that the wrong product may have been used and actually contacted the manufacturer. The manufacturer sent a rep to inspect the fence and he agreed it was simply an application problem. I was in communication with Bill Golden throughout this process and he seemed genuinely interested in the outcome of the inspection. I let him know what the rep said and I honestly expected to hear from him. In fact, I was so impressed with him personally, I expected he would come back to the job and re-apply the stain at least in the troubled areas. After I let Bill know what the rep had said... I never heard from him again. I had hoped I found a painter / stainer I could call for all of our needs but now I'm afraid to try them again. If I could do the job over I would still try Bill Golden, but I've learned to make it clear what the expectations are and what remedies will be offered in advance.

Mr. Golden responded quickly to provide an estimate. He was aware we were getting additional estimates. He estimated 3 hours for removal of the wallpaper with the understanding if additional time was needed we would be charged $55.00 per man hour for the additional time. Mr. Golden and his crew showed up as scheduled and begin the work. The work was done very professionally. We are very pleased with the quality of the work. However when we received the final bill we were charged for 11 manhours for the removal of the wallpaper. This was 8 hours more than the estimate and resulted in a charge of $440.00 more than his original estimate.I think we were given a low estimate in order to obtain our business. Either this was done intentionally or Mr. Golden is not very good at estimating the time required to complete a job.

Met will Bill Golden in late August for a quote, he was professional and friendly. He emailed a quote within 48 hours. They started three or four weeks later, which was they time period given when they accepted the job. They called 72 hours prior to their starting the job, arrived when they said they would and finished in three days. I was very happy with their work.

The job went very well. The painters were pleasant and worked well together. They also protected plants, sidewalks and steps. They cleaned up well. The painting was well done in every respect. When they discovered that a piece of redwood siding was rotting at the bottom, Bill made numerous phone calls to find a 14-foot piece of redwood to replace it and drove to pick it up. He cut it on site and installed it that same day. We were very pleased that he could handle this repair so that we did not have to locate another workman to do it.

The original estimate was that it would take one day to complete. Due to the dry wall needing to dry, it took two full days to complete. Scheduling was a bit tricky since we were both busy. However, they managed to match my schedule. There was a bit of a problem (it happens) with the stucco on the ceiling where the holes were repaired. When the first hole was done, the spray stuff exploded and got on everything. When they did the second, they took extra precautions to keep it from happening again. It did not. They did a pretty good job of cleaning up the mess, but they had to repeat some of the cleaning on the second day. It was much better after that. All the work looks great now that it is done. They did a very good job.

He was excellent, and very pleasant to have around. It was a new house, and the colors were awful! He redid some drywall, and repainted. He also took down old wallpaper and patched some holes. He made sure to repair the drywall so the walls were smooth before paint went on. Now several members of my family and friends are using him for their projects, and I will be using him again, for sure!

The painting crew showed up at our house at 8 am just as promised with bright smiles and ready to go. The crew worked extremely well and everyone had their own responsibilities to accomplish our project. Bill was there to walk thru the house and go over the last minute details. This painter is fantastic and does quality work every time! No need to look further than this one - he does what he promises, is efficient and completely awesome!

Bill was very helpful in the estimating process. He even did an additional unplanned estimate for interior work, which I very much appreciate, given the extra time in took. In the end, it took quite awhile for Bill to turn around the estimate. He mentioned that he still works in the field, and is the only one available to do estimates. On one hand, that's great - to get the owner on your job. However, the responsiveness was a bit of a concern. Bill's estimate was the lowest of 5 - $1,500 lower than the highest bid. However, cost was not my only driver. It was important to us how companies approached the Tudor boards. Some proposed to paint the edges and face different colors - largely, my impression, based on what was easiest for the painters, vs. what looks best. If companies "cut corners" on the Tudor boards...it left doubts in our mind about their approach to quality. Bill was one of two companies of 5 who bid who proposed to have different colors on the boards.

They did an excellent job, got everything done in around 10 days. They had to do some repair work on the stucco of my home and did great with that too! I'd use them again and recommend them to others!

Bill and his crew arrived early and ready to paint. We were amazed by their ability to accomplish all of the painting in one day! Bill is a great painter, reasonably priced and a man of his word! We will be hiring them to complete the remainder of the house painting next Spring '07! What a find...and all because of Angie's List!

They were outstanding! They were able to accommodate my request for scheduling, which is important with a rental property. They came right on time, were very professional, and neat. They even installed a new deadbolt at no charge.

Bill was prompt in returning calls and in giving an estimate for painting the interior of my house. I felt that he gave a fair price. He seemed to be very concerned about doing quality work. I did not choose Bill for the work because I needed it done very quickly, and another painter was more available at the time. I would definitely call Bill again for similar work.
