Given that it was the holidays, it took him a couple of days to get out to determine the problem. He said it was a bad coil because the coolant essentially ate through it. (Common problem of systems of my age, although I think we had a bad coil to begin with...more on that later.) He priced several options for us. He ordered the part and would be out about a week later to install it (again the holidays were really messing up the schedule). Unfortunately the part hadn't arrived as expected so we had to wait several days longer. When the part arrived, he fixed it.
The geo system has NEVER worked so well. This is why I say it was faulty to begin with. It was our first geo unit and didn't really know what to expect. We knew the auxiliary heat would kick on when extra cold, so we thought that was normal. Nope. Ever since Rusty installed the new coil, the auxiliary heat has kicked on only once and for a very short time. We've had some really cold temperatures and I know the old system (coil) would have ran aux heat nonstop. The house is warmer.
