our man. All this occurred over two appointments in the fall of 2011 and the spring of 2012. At every step in the process Mike exceeded my expectations. He thoroughly explained his diagnoses and showed me where he had found problems. He fixed squeaks and part alignment issues, fabricated or repaired parts as necessary and looked for ways to minimize costs without being asked. If you have a project car that you are unable or unwilling to work on yourself, and you live within a reasonable distance, Mike is your man. He is a true automobile craftsman and clearly enjoys what he does. In addition to mechanical, Mike has a small machine shop and can do some welding and fabrication work. Overall, my experience was very positive and I am enjoying driving my classic again. Just one word of caution. Mike has limited garage space and is always working on something cool. So if you decide to give him a try you may have to wait a little. It is well worth it.
Description of Work: Called Mike after reading review on Angie's List to look at my 1959 AMC Nash Metropolitan. I was looking for a mechanic that works primarily on classic car restorations. The car had been garaged for approximately 2.5 years because of mechanical reliability issues. Mike said he would be glad to look at the car but was completely booked up for approximately 6 weeks. He took my info and offered to call back when he had an opening. A month later he called to say he was still busy but getting close and that he hadn't forgot me. When he called again two weeks late, we made an appointment. I asked Mike to go completely through the car and evaluate for mechanical issues and give me a list. This took about three days and Mike called with a complete list of recommendations. He went through everything from top to bottom and front to back including engine tests for compression and leak down. The following repairs were performed. Rebuild all brake and clutch hydraulics.Replace radiator capChanged oil and filterRebuilt carburetorRebuilt fuel pumpRebuilt distributorChanged shocksflushed and refilled rear end and transmissiondropped fuel tank to repair filler neck gasket (leak) and repair sending unitPerformed tune up I ordered all parts myself for an additional $700.00

Metalworks went through the car for two days and made a detailed list of recommended service items and updates. A price estimate was provided, but Mike was upfront that costs could go up or down depending upon what his crew uncovered as they got to work on my 40+ year old vehicle. The work took about a week and a half to complete after the parts were delivered, and I was welcome to drop by the shop to watch the progress and learn. I was impressed with Metalworks' attention to detail and genuine interest in the car. I know Mike spent more hours working on the car than he billed, not to mention the several hours he spent helping me better understand the car and how to maintain it. Simply put, Metalworks made my old car run again, made it run safer than original, and rekindled my love for the car. In fact, this fantastic experience with Metalworks gave me the confidence to purchase another 30+ year old car for the winter months while the Beetle is in storage.
