We hired Bill Naville and his crew of up to three to 1) reinforce a sagging second-level floor in preparation for hardwood and kitchen cabinets; 2) replace two entry doors; 3) install 5 windows; and 4) lay 1100 square feet of hardwood flooring. The crew was very respectful of our home and property, and conducted themselves politely in all regards. The work was mostly of high quality. The crew found and repaired extensive termite damage without cutting corners, or rushing the work. The sagging floor is substantially reinforced and the drywall work to conceal the engineered beams was excellent. The doors were installed to perfection, and the crew even reinforced beams that they found to be ineffectively secured. The work done to prepare the floor for hardwood, however, was mediocre as evidenced by dips and rises in the finished hardwood. But given the condition of the subfloor before they arrived, it's substantially improved. The contractor ultimately abandoned the work we hired them for half-way through the project in favor of other customers. It took over a month to find other contractors to agree to finish the work Naville abandoned, which includes 5 uninstalled windows and more than half of the hardwood flooring. We suspect Naville lost interest in completing the renovation when we challenged him on one of his invoices. We were billed $750 for the crew of two to install one door, which took three-and-a-half hours work. When we questioned the contractor, he said it took a day-and-a-half. After he had time to double-check his records in his office, he claimed it was only seven hours. However, we have verifiable evidence they left after only 3.5 hours with the door completely installed. Naville ultimately adjusted the bill downward, charging 4.5 hours of labor, which we paid, assuming an hour of travel time was included. We have not heard from him since. The quality of work performed by BW&L Construction is only modestly above that of other contractors we've used recently. Despite the dips and rises in our finished kitchen floor, we are grateful to the contractor for reinforcing two levels of the house as substantially as they did, and for diligently replacing termite-damaged wood. We recommend them as a contractor on the quality of their work, however homeowners should carefully monitor their invoices for accuracy. For that reason, we would not use this contractor again without a way to verify the labor being billed accurately reflects the time spent on the job.
