This past summer (2008) we hired Zinn Kitchens of Flora, Indiana to design and install new cabinetry and cook top in our home. Zinn’s product, quality control and customer support left a great deal to be desired. When the cabinets first arrived, several modules were not fully painted, some so poorly done that the interior surfaces looked like they had been merely hit with overspray rather than being directly sprayed with the paint gun. We had the installers remove the worst of the modules and returned the cabinets. The second time the cabinets showed up, they still had defects. We, in concert with the installers, specifically marked the unacceptable workmanship with a grease pencil they supplied. On the third delivery attempt, because even they thought the paint job was so shoddy they didn’t think it was good enough. AFTER FOUR DELIVERY ATTEMPTS, we finally got to where the cabinet paint job was, well, OK. By this time we were tired of the back-and-forth and just wanted our kitchen finished. Alas, paint wasn’t the only quality control nightmare. Shelving inside the cabinets is supposed to be adjustable to accommodate various items. In one corner cabinet, the shelves were in fact adjustable. In the other, they were not, an oversight acknowledged by Zinn. The cabinet had already been installed when we caught the mistake and rectifying it would have involved once again dismantling a major portion of the cabinetry, not to mention about two-thirds of our finished kitchen. As we were already in a state of a mind to say to Zinn, “Just leave us alone, already,” we, Zinn, and our general remodeling contractor, Jim Vega, agreed that the latter could modify the cabinet in question on-site and bill Zinn directly for the modification. Then there was the refrigerator issue. We had originally planned to purchase a new refrigerator with a door that matched the cabinetry. After FOUR WEEKS of waiting for a sample to see if the refrigerator manufacturer’s trim colors available matched the cabinet color (Dover white) we had another, “oh, the heck with it…” moment, canceled the new refrigerator plans and just had the general contractor return our old ‘fridge in the empty space. Throughout this process, our original point of contact for the job was very difficult to contact. Over the entire period of design, manufacture and (problematic) installation, he was unavailable a number of times, twice being on vacation and, in general, difficult to get in touch with for on-site discussion of the job. In short, we felt the in-process customer support, monitoring and management of both the fabrication and installation of these cabinets was problematic, at best. At the end of this incredibly frustrating experience, the manager, with what I consider a meager discount from the final bill, officially acknowledged our dissatisfaction. I would definitely NOT recommend this company to do your kitchen. What they promise is impressive; what they deliver is underwhelming at best.
