My car had been starting funny for a few days, and it was very pronounced one Saturday while I was out running a bunch of errands. I couldn't remember how old my battery was, so I assumed I needed a new one. Rather than making arrangements to borrow a car to leave my car at my normal mechanic, I decided to stop in Pep Boys and get it taken care of. The gentlemen at the desk were pleasant and at first thought the wait was going to be very long, but they were able to get someone to work on it sooner than expected (but it still took almost an hour). I was told that the battery and starter both checked out just fine. I was given a printout to that effect and charged $20. The following Thursday when I went to leave for work the car would not start at all. Knowing that my battery was not the problem, because Pep Boys had assured me of that, I didn't try to have it jump started but instead had it towed to my regular mechanic, arranged to be late to work and to borrow a car. Imagine my surprise when my mechanic called to tell me that both the battery AND the starter were bad! I returned to Pep Boys the following Saturday expecting to get my $20 back and hoping that they would pay for the unnecessary tow. I explained to the gentleman at the desk what had happened and he called his manager. After explaining the situation to him, he made it very clear that I would get my $20 back but that he was not going to give me one penny more. While I do think paying for the tow would have been the right thing for them to do, my main concern is the incorrect information that was so confidently given to me, and not even receiving an apology from the manager for the expense and hassle that incorrect information caused me. Lesson learned. I will stick with my trusted mechanic.

I brought my Audi A4 in at 4pm, they had me on the schedule so I dropped off my keys. I waited in their waiting room for a while and then decided to go and have a meal across the street. An hour later I returned to see my car was still parked in the same spot and never made it inside the shop. I went in and requested my keys back since they didn't look at my car. The manager asked me if they looked at the vehicle, I said no and I let him know I had even called ahead to schedule an appointment to have the work done. He said he was sorry they never got to it and handed my keys back. This was my first and last time going to Pep Boys.

I've been going to them for a long time. They were great. They get you in really fast and get your car back to you pretty quickly. They got a lot of service done. The pricing is what I expected to be.

After purchasing two new wiper blades for my van, the clerk suggested that I have one of the employees accompany me to my van to install the wipers on the spot. I readily agreed and the employee installed the wipers within five minutes. He was also friendly during the process. I appreciated the fact that I didn't have to take the extra time to install them myself, nor did I have to shell out any extra $ to have it done.

One headlight was out on my vehicle. Prior to going to PepBoys, I attempted to install the light bulb myself, and failed to do so. I also went to the local quick-lube place to install a light bulb, and they could not do so either, and recommended that I go to a full service mechanic for the job.
The headlight socket on my vehicle is very hard to reach.
We told PepBoys the situation, and that both of us had previously failed to do so, and that the socket was hard to access. They chuckled, said it would be no problem, and would only cost a few bucks. I assume this was because they didn't believe me.
40 minutes later, they came back with an estimate that the front grill would have to be removed, that the socket was corroded, and both headlamps should be replaced because with the front grill off and all the work to do that, the second lightbulb would be cheap. Total estimate: $204.00! For a light bulb!
We rejected the quote, and were charged $27.12 for parts (not sure what parts they used) and service to date. This is despite our original estimate for lightbulb replacement was very small, and we never received a revised or written estimate prior to this. We paid it.
Later we went to the dealer, and had the lightbulb replaced for under about half the price of their quote, with no mention of a corroded socket.
In short we were
- Not told costs up front.
- Not listened to when we described the issue.
- Charged without prior authorization.
- Told a part was defective, which probably wasn't.
- Given an estimate that was double what a Toyota dealer would charge for similar service.

My son's car quit running and we took it to Pep Boys for a diagnosis. We were told it would cost $ 700.00 to repair. We drove to the store for a detailed expalanation of the estimate. We were greeted by the Service Manager (?). We asked i he had inspected the auto and he replied and quot; I cannot look at every car, that is why we have the mechanicsand quot;. We asked the mechanic to show us the problem and tell us what the issues were. He explained very qucikly what the problems were. We asked what actually caused the car not to operate and he belligerntly said and quot;I just told youand quot;. Since we are not mechanics, we sought a better understanding which he did not care to do. He has a real attitude with someone questioning the estimate. After a careful review of the estimate we deemed the actual problem coul have been fixed for around $ 200.00 (based on their estimate). They had several items listed which did not need to be included to make the car operational again. The big irony is we had the car towed to Pep Boys because it would not start. After paying $ 98.00 for the diagnosis, the car started several times afterwards. We drove it to another repair shop and will follow up with their opinion. When we told the service manager of our displeasure, he didnot repsond. we told him we own several cars and would not bring any to them in furture. Again no comment or reply.

This is clearly a place where mechanics are paid to run up the repair bill. Dont take your car to Pep Boys. The lack real customer servcie and care.

12/20/2011 UPDATE: Pep Boys reviewed the invoice and agreed there was an overcharge on labor. Resolution was reduction in bill by $160 which was a fair price. No complaints with the work and kudos for reaching out to address price problem. But I wish I didn't have to scream from the rafters to get it squared away==============================================================

Had my '92 S10 pickup towed there after breakdown nearby. All it needed was a and quot;tuneupand quot; which was diagnosed after a $90 and quot;diagnostic evaluationand quot;.

So the tune up meant replacing spark plus and wires ($32 parts + $170 labor) and the distributor cap ($23 parts + $110 labor) and the ignition coil ($23 parts + $100 labor). And then $56 for a warranty on their work (!) which you can't avoid. .

Unless you're in the market to spend $500 for a standard tune-up, LOOK ELSEWHERE.

Great! My wife was in a hurry with our 6 yr old grandson and brought the car into Pep Boys on 96th st. They were busy with a few customers ahead of her, but they were nice and profesional and worked getting the lights fixed right away. Thanks Pep Boys for the great service.

Our car was within walking distance at a local business and wouldn't start. It was very hot out and I had my 2 girls under age 2 with me. We walked over to Pep Boys and a mechanic walked me back to my car and gave it a jump. This was all free and there was no obligation to do anything else. We did drive over to Pep Boys though and got the battery tested for free. All the guys were really great. We ended up getting a new battery and were in and out really fast.

It’s the only place I take my vehicle to. They are cost effective. They get the job done sooner than you expect. I would absolutely use the again. When I used to take my vehicle to another auto service guy it was like a major financial soaking. I like the way pep boys does it. They focus on exactly what you are looking for. If there’s nothing wrong then they will let you know about that. They will let you know about the less costly procedures too. They just beat the dealership hands down.

I went in trying to get an estimate on how much it would cost for an oil change and a new battery (plus installation). I was checking with a couple other local area places and found that most of them were around the same price. The reason I went back to Pep Boys was because they were actually open past 7pm and for someone with a full time job getting to a place that works on cars but closes at 7pm is just not helpful. I called them back for a more detailed estimate and took the car in that night. They were able to do the oil change and replace my battery. The did the work fairly quickly and were very helpful with any and all questions I had for them. The best part was at the end when I went to pay. They were able to search around and find out that one of their more expensive but higher voltage batteries was on sale at a competitors and gave me the sale price instead. I ended up with a better battery at a cheaper price than I expected and I didn't even have to do anything. I was definitely pleased with the mechanics there and will definitely be returning there again.

The breaks on our van had been making a noise. We took it to Pep Boys to get it checked out. They inspection and determined that there was not a problem and made a simple adjustment. Can't believe they only charged $11. We were very pleased.

I called 2 days in advance to set the appointment for a failing alternator, which had been installed by another Pep Boy's location. They were friendly and advised that the repair would take a couple hours. I brought in my car first thing in the morning, and expecting to only wait a few hours, hung around the store and nearby shops. After over 3 hours I checked back in and was advised that it would be about another hour. I left for an hour and returned to wait about another 2 hours. The entire process took over 6 hours. They were apologetic and did discount the labor (the part was covered under warranty).

They are way too expensive for the service they provide. They try to upsell everything to you even if you don't need it. I was not impressed and all and will not go back.

Called 1-800-PepBoys and told by person taking complaint that Director would return call within 48 hours. In the meantime, spoke with Assistant Manager of store who tired to work out the situation. The car was fixed the next day. The refund for the diagnostic did not occur. The Director never returned the call. Again called 1-800-PepBoys and spoke with Director who could not confirm anything that we had been told previously. Said that if told, he would refund amount for diagnostic test on car that would be done and he would have Store Manager or Service Manager return the call. Still have not received this call and it has been nearly a week;still no refund on diagnostic check.
