The headlight socket on my vehicle is very hard to reach.
We told PepBoys the situation, and that both of us had previously failed to do so, and that the socket was hard to access. They chuckled, said it would be no problem, and would only cost a few bucks. I assume this was because they didn't believe me.
40 minutes later, they came back with an estimate that the front grill would have to be removed, that the socket was corroded, and both headlamps should be replaced because with the front grill off and all the work to do that, the second lightbulb would be cheap. Total estimate: $204.00! For a light bulb!
We rejected the quote, and were charged $27.12 for parts (not sure what parts they used) and service to date. This is despite our original estimate for lightbulb replacement was very small, and we never received a revised or written estimate prior to this. We paid it.
Later we went to the dealer, and had the lightbulb replaced for under about half the price of their quote, with no mention of a corroded socket.
In short we were
- Not told costs up front.
- Not listened to when we described the issue.
- Charged without prior authorization.
- Told a part was defective, which probably wasn't.
- Given an estimate that was double what a Toyota dealer would charge for similar service.
This is clearly a place where mechanics are paid to run up the repair bill. Dont take your car to Pep Boys. The lack real customer servcie and care.
Had my '92 S10 pickup towed there after breakdown nearby. All it needed was a and quot;tuneupand quot; which was diagnosed after a $90 and quot;diagnostic evaluationand quot;.
So the tune up meant replacing spark plus and wires ($32 parts + $170 labor) and the distributor cap ($23 parts + $110 labor) and the ignition coil ($23 parts + $100 labor). And then $56 for a warranty on their work (!) which you can't avoid. .
Unless you're in the market to spend $500 for a standard tune-up, LOOK ELSEWHERE.
