About us

In 1976, Jeff Gatewood hung a handmade sign and began Allisonville Nursery with 15 spruce trees, hand-dug from a Michigan farm. The 3-acre plot across from the family owned airport in Fishers, Indiana was carved out of farmland that had been in the family for nearly 30 years and housed a 20 x 40 foot structure that once held a flower shop run by Jeff's mother. After moving half a mile north in 1985 after too many close calls with small aircraft, Allisonville Nursery now encompasses 5 acres and has expanded into a 7,500 square foot garden store and gift shop. Wonderful service! We stopped in two weeks ago. A delightful place with a vast supply of greenery. We purchased a tree and a bush, and had them planted for us. The entire experience was top notch! We will be back!

First review on AngiesList, not normally one to leave reviews but I thought they deserved it. I was looking for help setting up a small gardening space for my mom and a friend recommended Allisonville. She’s got a small space, used to loves getting out ( she couldn’t at the time due to the quarantine ) and I thought it’d be a great way to get outside without much public interaction. Didn’t know really what I was looking for coming in ( had an idea ) but wasn’t sure about low maintenance gardening. She’s in her 80’s and obviously can’t do much physical activity ( or at least I don’t want her to ). A taller guy with light hair ( don’t remember his name, sorry! ) set me up with some essentials and tomato plants. The staff was very knowledgeable and extremely attentive. My mom’s small garden looks great and as soon as she feels comfortable we’ll be back to do some expanding! Originally I was surprised they were even open. I have a “ go to “garden supply store near me, but don’t mind traveling a bit further. I’ll definitely be back for help with our garden this summer. Thanks again guys!

Normally I would rate this nursery higher. I shop here all time and have for the past 30 + years. For the most part I've found their staff helpful and their inventory plentiful. The indoor store is one of my go to places for florals and other decorating pieces. That's the good. Now for the not so good. I shopped for annuals yesterday. Being over 60 and having TYPE 1 DIABETES I wore a mask and gloves as I always do when I go out and practice social distancing. I was appalled at the number of employees not wearing masks. I removed my mask when I got in the car and proceeded to pick up my plants. I didn't see anyone around to help so I exited the car and started to put the plants in my trunk. Out of nowhere appeared a young man who started helping me. He was not wearing a mask. As I loaded the last flat he bent down not more than 6 INCHES from my face and said something about the flat fitting just so - breathing on me. I tried holding my breath. I wanted to throttle him and say get the f____ out of my face and space! Needless to say I was absolutely incensed by his carelessness and inconsideration. Everyone serving the public should be wearing a mask. Period. This should not be a choice. Covid 19 is extremely contagious; 1/3 of people are asymptomatic and it can take 2 weeks for symptoms to show. I do the best I can to take care of myself. Furthermore I risk exposing my husband who is over 60 and ASTHMATIC with high blood pressure. I am extremely disappointed and hope the employee hasn't been exposed himself. I will be shopping at Rosie's from now on. They ALL wear masks and practice social distancing - besides they are wonderful people I know on a first name basis as their staff turnover is extremely low (what turnover?). I highly recommend them. Goodbye Allisonville Nursery. You obviously don't care about the safety your customers. Possibly exposing me to a killer virus is UNECEPTABLE. For me it could be a matter of life or death.

It has been 1 month and no tree. I called and was told they could not give me any idea when it would be done. They would not even confirm I was on their list.

"I'm sorry, [Member Name Removed]. We've had a tremendous amount of rain that has significantly set us back. We've added an additional installation crew and have tried to catch up as much as possible, but we're fighting a losing battle. Our guys work in light rain, but saturated soil brings us to a full stop. Because we don't know what weather the future holds and what conditions we find when we get to a job site, we can't confirm any dates until we give you a call the day before your installation. I promise we are doing the best we can and your installation should be coming up soon. This week we are installing trees that were purchased on the weekend of April 22 if that gives you any indication from when you purchased (I'm not in the office today so I can't check your record at this moment.)"

Just great. Very useful plant guides on their website which allowed me to select plants and specific varieties before going into the store.

I was pleased with the service and planting of the tree. The total cost of buying the tree and having them deliver, plant the tree and stack it went well but the price was higher than I thought it would be. The price was probably within the cost I would have paid at other nurseries. The tree is warranted for a year and hopefully I will not need to worry about that. They did a great job of arranging to plant the tree and actually planting it.

I don't go to Allisonville Nursery much as their customer service has not been very good - not enough employees around to help.    Well, I tried them this year as I was looking for a specific plant and was pleasantly surprised!    Both times I went there, I was able to get help relatively quickly and the ladies were both knowledgeable about the plants and what they had available.    A week or so later when I called about a disease issue, the gentleman who answered was able to answer my question extremely well over the phone and explain our current weather/diseases/treatments thoroughly.  This spring has improved my interest in Allisonville Nursery.   I will try them next time I have a need.

It was extremely expensive. The service is excellent and the staff is very knowledgably but it was just a little too pricey for me.

I love them! I go there for lots of things, very small town feel. They advised me on what to buy and they planted the larger trees and shrubs for me. The price was very reasonable.

The service went well. They did a good job with the shrub planting. We did have to question the sales persons recommendations for the shrubbery. We got that straightened out with the owner and he advised us on the best shrubs that grow well in shade. Two planters came out and completed the job in about 3 hours. They also laid mulch. They were careful and explained to us what they were doing. They informed us on how to care for the shrubs through the winter and spring. They seemed to enjoy what they were doing. We did have to wait 3 weeks for the shrubs to be delivered and planted because it was their busy season.

On Sept 10, 2014 I was having a large apple tree and 3 burning buses removed from my small front yard and I wanted to replace them with a River Birch.  I arrived at the nursery on the day that many new trees were being delivered. Tree Boy (I don't remember his real name) was there and he  worked with me for at least an hour to choose the right tree for my location and meet my needs for a good shade tree.  We talked about what kind of conditions each kind of tree needed and what its growing characteristics were like.  There were probably at least 12 nice Birch trees to choose from.
My front yard is very small and I would not know for sure if there would be enough space for a tree as large as a River Birch gets.  Allisonville Nursery said that I could buy the tree and leave it there until I knew for sure and get a refund if it would not work.
I returned 3 weeks later when the markings of the utility lines showed that I only had space for a smaller tree.  The owner took me around to evaluate other trees.  We decided on a Honey Locust.  By this time I had only 2 to choose from.  The refund and new purchase were done with no problem.
They gave me an estimate of about 2 weeks until installation.  10 days later I called to see where I was on the schedule.  I never have work done when I am not present.  The nursery was willing to schedule the delivery and installation for that thurs. when I would be home all day.
Two men came and did a great job of installation.  I had planned ahead and had the tree removal men grind a hole for the new tree so the nursery men did not have to dig the whole large hole through the concrete that is my dirt.  They told me that they would have done that if it were necessary.
Everyone I worked with at Allisonville Nursery was very friendly and helpful and took all the time need to be sure that my needs were met.  They have very nice plants and I definitely plan to return there when I need other plants for my yard.

Kirk re-designed our existing landscape during a Saturday consultation at Allisonville Nursery. He provided a quote and a few days later we agreed to proceed. We were a little concerned to proceed with a large landscape job without Kirk having been to our house to review the plans firsthand, but he assured us he would finalize and alter as needed during installation.
True to his word, Kirk made adjustments on site. He moved, split, or transplanted existed plants and extended beds based on his recommendations or our feedback. He brought additional plants for us to consider and even offered to replant some bushes if we weren't completely happy with the outcome.
Kirk was extremely knowledgeable, had great ideas and designs. We couldn't be happier with the outcome and will continue to use him for our landscaping needs. We'll also continue to buy from Allisonsville's home decor shop based on our landscape experience.
