They came out to refinish my floors and also to replace the boards in the hallway on the main floor in my 1929 English Tutor home. They claimed that they sent one of their best installers out. The installer did not install the boards straight so instead of relaying the floor before he nailed it down, he cut a wedged shaped board to try to make up for his error that went from 1/8" on one end and tapered up to 1.25" on the other end and this took place over a 6' length of board. It was right in the middle of the floor and looked terrible. This is not the proper way to install wood flooring. Denny the owner came out (very nice and professional) and agreed to reinstall the floor in the hallway. They came out a second time and installed the boards correctly this time until it came time to nail the boards down. The proper way to nail down strip flooring is to nail (in a straight line) a continuous row of nails every 8" across the boards. Whoever nailed this did it like they were drunk. They weren't, but it sure was anything but straight. Instead of nice neat rows of nails every 8", they made no attempt at all to go in a straight row. The rows of nails would randomly weave in 5" to the left and 3 - 5" to the right. The nail rows are all curved and look just terrible. There is no repair for this except to tear it out and redo it. Which is not an option at this point.
They also attempted to remove the squeaks in the floor by nailing the boards down. (which they did do). The problem came when the nail gun they used did not have the proper nail guard on the end; so instead of putting one on it, they used it without the nail guard, which instead of leaving nice individual nail marks, their nail gun put huge indentations in the floor that were between 1/8" and 1/4" in length. Huge deep gouges in the floor. Each and every nail was like this where they tried to get rid of the squeaks. There must have been well over 150 of these gouges in the floor. 50 or so in one 18" circle. Then to make matters worse, they forgot to fill the majority of these gouges with wood filler before they refinished the floors. So now the floor is full of the large gouges/holes that really distract from the floor.
They claim to use a 99% dustless system, but they certainly did not use this system in my home. There was sawdust all over the place. I asked them to hang plastic around the staircase so they would not get any sawdust upstairs. They told me that they would. But when I came back, the plastic was hanging from the ceiling, but was 3 feet shy of touching the floor. Sawdust coated everything upstairs and it took me at least 5 hours of vacuuming and cleaning to get rid of it.
For some unknown reason, when they applied the stain in the hallway, they must have applied the stain twice in an area that is 3 feet wide x 6 feet long. The stain in this area was much darker than the rest of the floor. When I asked them about this, they never gave me an answer as to why it was that way or if they would do anything about it. They just ignored me and acted like I never asked the question.
Every time I would bring up a concern about their work, they would give me some made up BS answer that was not true. Hoping that I was ignorant and didn't know any better. Each and every one of their employees would do this. (Except the owner, Denny). They would just try to BS their way out of things if you questioned them about why they did something that did not look right.
The bottom line is this: Albert Griffith and Son's has been in business for over 30 years, but the work that they do is something that you would expect from a company that has never done this type of work, ever before. From my experience, they don't know how to properly use a nail gun. They don't know how to properly apply stain in an even fashion. They employ people who appear to have very little experience judging from the quality of work that they do. They take very little pride in their work. And their vehicles are dirty, dented, rusty vans that pretty much reflect the quality of work that they do.
Now I will say this. If you don't look at all of the details everywhere, the floors look beautiful. They are smooth, the stain is beautiful and their are no nails sticking up. But if you look a little closer, you will see all of the issues that plain should have never happened from any company, much less a company that has been doing this for a long time. They are not good at what they do and for the high prices they charge, I just would have never expected them to do this type of poor workmanship. Denny did offer to discount my price from $6,000 down to $5,000 which was a nice gesture, but I would have much preferred to pay the full price and get the quality job that they were hired to do.
"Admittedly, we did have some problems on the job, added with the fact that the subfloor was not as in as good of shape as the estimator had anticipated. We are not perfect by any means and in construction there are always obstacles to overcome. We worked evenings and weekends to keep things on schedule so the customer could move in. We called the customer to check to see if everything was to his satisfaction, he said we missed a few nail holes that needed putty and we forgot to install shoemold, for which we deducted $700.00 from his bill. He seemed satisfied on the phone and we said if he has any issues to please call us and let us know. We have not heard from him other than this review."
First time we ended up with "fish eyes" and a foot print. Also stained stainless dishwasher door. They came back and screened and resealed. Outcome was worse: fish eyes, pooling and waffling by fridge. More stain on quarter round and trim. No fix to dishwasher. We called again. Very apologetic. Scott, Supervisor, promised us everything to be redone and taken care of 100%. We rescheduled May 6th. When we confirmed they had forgot us. But Rick promised they'd be here and promised top notch performance. Crew came on time (no supervisor with them as promised). Used sander so in addition to the mess we now have circular buff marks showing through the seal. Still have waffling more staining to our trim/woodwork and same dishwasher door. We called. We are angry. They offered to redo, send a painter in and take our dishwasher door out and have it fixed. We no longer believe them or believe in them. They have never come through on their promises. What we want now is a refund so we can hire a company with an "A" rating and get a professional job.
What a series of disappointments, frustration, work and wasted time on our part.
Albert its time to close shop. You obviously have no interest or pride in your work.
They were in our home for (4) days the week of October 5th. Installed hardwood in kitchen, stained hardwood, and put two coats of poly on top. Then replaced several areas that were damaged in our dining room. Also, they replaced trim that has not been installed since our cabinet install as well as install under-cabinet trim. They had to come back another 1/2 to finish-up the dining room and install the threshold between kitchen and entry-way (This was our fault, because we needed to install the French doors from kitchen to entryway), before they could put in the threshold. During all of the installation work there were probably 4 different crews of workers from Griffith and they were all very thorough, professional, courteous, , and neat and clear about their work. I would HIGHLY recommend them to anyone, especially since we had such a horrific experience with another flooring company.
CONS: really hard to get a hold of, it sometimes took several phone calls to get a hold of anyone and a couple of my emails were never responded to at all; the downstairs and upstairs (including a staircase) were supposed to be completed in two separate waves to work around some other renovations we did in the house and for some reason that was never explained to me the workmen decided not to do the staircase at the same time as the upstairs and made no mention of coming back to finish the job. Thankfully I hadn't paid for the stairs yet and will had to schedule them to be done separately.
OVERALL: the floors look beautiful so while the CONS are really annoying I would likely use Albert Griffith and Sons again
