Taylor Works

Deck or Porch Repair,

About us

Taylor Works has 30 plus years in home building, remodeling and deck construction. We offer quality work at a fair price. The way we work with any project is for you to purchase the materials after we determine what is needed, then discuss the labor charge so we both agree. If a project is going to last longer than one week, I will ask for a partial labor payment equal to the amount of construction completed. We stand by our work and will always take care of any problems after construction.

Harlan saved me a ton of money by only replacing what was needed and power washing the rest. Now I have a nice sturdy deck for a fraction of the cost of a new deck. Harlan is quite knowledgeable in addition to being a really nice guy! Highly recommend him!

This project took well over a month to complete. I understand that weather and social distancing were issues, however on the days he showed up to work, he was only there for two or three hours. When he would leave for the day, he would leave trash, tools, and materials all over the place. He never showed us a design of the deck he was building. Rather he just put it together and explained it to us after he made it. Unfortunately, we were not on the same page and he had to make changes after he had started. Finally, the craftsmanship was poor. The decking is not flush with the frame on one side of the deck. He assured me that it will expand and contract and even out, but that cannot be right because the decking is flush on one side but not the other. He charged us more than the agreed-upon price, claiming that he had to do more work than he originally quoted. However, that additional labor was a direct result of his failure to clearly communicate with me and yet I had to pay for it. I am extremely disappointed with the finished product and would not recommend this contractor to anyone.
Response from Taylor Works
"All i can say is that when you add more work to the project there is a corresponding cost for materials , labor.and time for ordering materials. I am a certified Trex installer, my decks have to be built to their specs or it cancels any warranty."

I hate writing this review. I would much rather write a glowing review. This guy came out promptly, he seemed to know what he was talking about and I liked him. He came to do the work and did it faster than I expected. I had told him to send a picture when done and if it looked good I would open the garage and he could have his check. From the angle of the image it looked OK, so I gave him the check. When I got home, it was immediately obvious it was not right. The deck was twisted and out of square. One side of the deck was 1 inch longer than the other side and I had ask that the deck stop at the corner of the house, but it extended an inch beyond. There were joists that had 2 out of 3 screws that completely missed the joist. I contacted him and he agreed to come back and fix it. He showed up to fix it and I implored him to get the project done correctly. He and the helper worked and left. It was WORSE! It was still out of square, The joists were cut jagged, the corner was not even connected fully, there was a bulge in the middle of the rim joist and on several of the joists only one screw was in the board. It was a mess. My son-in-law and me had to tear it apart and fix it. One corner was 1 3/4" high and the other corner was 3/4 inches low and the joists were not secured to the beam and the beam and posts were not secure into the concrete below the deck structure. He also used screws in the joist hangers, rather than nails and he didnt fill all of the joist hanger holes. Screws do not have the shear strength of nails. I am out $800 and still had to do it myself. I sent him images and ask is this really quality work? He said he would send me back part of my payment but I have not seen it yet. I am adding a link to a collage of images taken after he repaired it, lets see if Home Adviser removes the link: {Link Redacted}

We did a tear out of our wooden deck and replaced it with trek. Harlan gave us several options for rails / bench. We had rain and material delays but overall the project went well. He has you pay for materials at Loweâ s and you donâ t pay him for the job until it is completed. We were happy with the overall cost of the project.

Harlan Taylor did a great job rebuilding our deck. Harlan communicated well and made sure my wife and I were kept up to date on the progress and satisfied with his work. After the job was completed, I found a few minor adjustments that I wanted made and Harlan came back out to make the necessary adjustments. Very satisfied. We are enjoying our new deck every day.

Harlan Taylor began our project over two years ago. One of his workers created a roof leak over our garage. Harlan told me from the beginning of the leak that he would repair all the damage and he did not. He left us with an $8,000 repair bill, an incomplete deck and tar stains all over the place.
Response from Taylor Works
"A typical red flag job that I should never taken on, compounded with a person who doesn't understand that the problem with his roof was not caused by me but from a previous contractor. As you can see from other reviews, I do quality work with excellent customer service"

we were having a bad issue with out porch and brought Harlan as a addition person ad told him the plan and he actually drilled holes in the porch to see what the problem was and he showed us what was the problem and I think that was amazing no one else would do that. he then found someone to do help and made sure it was done right. we really like him our porch looks stunning, he explained everything we needed

Harlan went the extra mile to ensure the concrete subcontractor completed the job to his satisfaction. This was a somewhat complicated job consisting of removal (by Harlan) of a supporting garage wall, removal of a portion of the garage floor and attached foundation, installation (by Harlan) of a new garage wall, and pouring a 12X36 foot patio. Excellent workmanship. If I had any more requirements of this type, Harlan would get my call.

Harlan was good to work with and kept us well-informed through the process. We had our deck rebuilt and the work was completed timely, as promised. Harlan did a quality job at a very reasonable price, and the new deck looks very nice.

He should have been rated higher than 5. Harlan is mostly a one man operation with a helper. I am a Realtor and have seen many homes with decks but let me say the one He built is the best one I've seen yet. Harlan offered many ideas that I hadn't thought of and made my deck very unique. He took pictures of it so ask him to see my deck if you get a quote. I had gotten estimates from 3. Harlan had other jobs going but he was kind enough to work mine in. He is very courteous and very precise and takes pride in his work. He recommended the concrete man who was the best I've seen in years.

Mr. Taylor was very nice, he came over the day after I contacted him and gave me an estimate. Another guy came and looked at my deck but never called me back with an estimate, this was a waste of my time and I felt he was very inconsiderate. But Mr. Taylor was very professional, he did a great job and I recommend him to anyone who is looking for an honest person who will do an excellent job at a good price.

This was an 800 sq ft deck makeover with top line composite materials. It took 69 days of off-and-on work and mistakes before I finally dismissed him and finished the job myself. I thought I was on candid camera. The mistakes, bad cuts, do-overs, no shows, poor quality and bad measurements were overwhelming. No clean up, driveway unusable.Suggested dumpster bag was way more expensive than quoted.I spent several NIGHTS un-doing and re-doing work so the project would go in the correct direction the next day - if they showed up.I would feel guilty if I didn't warn others of my experience.
Response from Taylor Works
"THe person is a total wacko. His inability to make a decision was what took so much time. He has a deck that needs to be totally torn down. He didnt want to spend the money to do that so I had to add new composite decking to sub par framing. He has wasted thousands of dollars on materials which we advised not to get. He was always trying to redo some of the work we did because his neighbors were wondering why he was not rebuilding the entire deck and he threw the blame on us.. The best thing for his deck is a match. I would ask you to look at the other reviews we have before listening to this .......!"

Harlan completed the demolition of old deck on time. He also put us in contact with an great concrete guys and they did a nice job with extending the patio. Harlan is to start construcion of the new deck on 10/30/13. I will follow up with another review once he has completed the new deck.
