David is an excellent piano technician. He's easy to work with, and he can do amazing things with a piano. You won't regret it.

There's a clear line of difference between someone who concentrates on "tuning" pianos and someone who takes that honorable specialty a step or two further and also becomes a "piano technician." 
David Smith, does the former exceedingly well and from my conversations with him, has the requisite skills and knowledge -- gained and honed, in part, at the Steinway and Sons factory and elsewhere -- needed to carry out the sophisticated duties of a technician.
When I learned of David's background, I decided to meet him and he came for an assessment of my piano's action.  I know just enough about action regulations to have been impressed by David's assessment, his recommendations for improving the action, and his very reasonable charge for doing so.
We scheduled a tuning and I'm completely satisfied with the job he did.
He was courteous enough to call me and advise me that he'd be a few minutes late to our appointment because the client before me needed a bit more time.  In the piano tuning/technician world, that's not an uncommon occurrence (and I appreciate that he doesn't just stop and move on; I wouldn't stand for that myself).
He arrived as he had projected; and he did a fine job of tuning.
Now, I'm really anxious to have David get into the innards of my action -- which hasn't had any regulation work of consequence done in more than a decade.
I appreciated his assessment, his solution, and his very reasonable price.
So stay tuned.  When that happens (after an impending move to a new home) I'll try to update this posting.
I also have to say that David is easy to talk to, interesting to learn from and good all around company.

This is my second year with using Smith Piano Services.  A year ago David installed new Renner hammers in my 1923 Steinway B piano. This year when he tuned, he concentrated further on the action and voicing.  He was meticulous about his work and asked  for feedback with the voicing until I was completely satisfied with the sound.  My piano now rivals any other in its class.
     One could not ask for a better piano technician anywhere!

David did an incredible job tuning our newly received piano.  I'm not an expert by any means, but I could tell a difference in the sound when he was finished. Was upfront about the cost and pitfalls of tuning something that had not been tuned in a while (maybe never). Arrived on time and answered my questions in a personable and professional manner.

Dave Smith is an expert piano technician. He has worked and trained at Steinway in New York and has many years of experience not only doing concert prep tuning and voicing but also working on all kinds of pianos, both in homes as well as for colleges and universities. His rates are reasonable and, even if you are outside the Indianapolis area (such as myself, in Lafayette), he is in sufficiently high demand and traveling enough that you might be able to arrange a tuning while he is in your area. That's what I do. I won't let anybody else touch my piano!

David is great, really into doing things the right way, very responsive to my requests, really customizing my new piano to it's new home/space. An Artist

This experience taught me what a truly high quality tuning can sound like.  We have used different tuners over the years but have never heard our piano sound as clear, rich and beautiful as it is after David's tuning.  My husband and I both play and we find ourselves repeatedly commenting to each other about the great improvement in the sound of our piano.  Extremely personable and great to have in our home.  David didn't mind answering questions about his work, as our children hovered about for a few minutes.  He was flexible in working with my schedule.  He arrived on time, and took off his shoes before walking on the carpet. It is clear that David's work is of the highest caliber.  We feel lucky to have found Smith Piano, highly recommended!

David Smith is our Steinway piano's best friend! He has been caring for our model A Steinway 6' grand piano since we purchased it in 2012.  His tuning is superb.  Today he not only tuned but also voiced our piano, - taking into careful consideration our acoustically bright studio as well as my general style of playing.  When he was finished the piano sounded absolutely gorgeous with a dark, rich sound. I am not only appreciative of David's expertise but also of his overall enthusiasm and friendliness.  David returns phone calls promptly, and is always punctual and respectful of our home.  We are very fortunate to have David as our piano's technician!

Professional, prompt, knowledgeable are all ways to describe my experience with Smith Piano Services. Dave has a great attitude and went above and beyond to make certain my piano was in the best condition possible when he was finished. This piano is over 45 years old and we had recently moved from Illinois. Dave was able to bring back the the tune on the piano and also did additional checks and fixed problems that he found. He did a very thorough job and I am extremely pleased with his work. We will definitely call him again for our next tune.

This is the second time that I've had the privilege of having David at the house working on our piano and just like the last time, he did an outstanding job.  Here's a funny story; the first time I met him, I was living in Tipton.  He and I got to talking and I found out that on his way to the house, he had been stopped by the local police for speeding (not hard to do on 19 because of several changes in speed limits) (been there done that:).  Anyway, I can't recall well, but I think he may have been ticketed which I felt really bad about. The thing that stood out to me was that he was not in a bad mood.  He was extremely personable.  I found that a rare quality considering that what he would be making on this piano tuning he would more than likely be forking over for fines.  So technically, it was likely costing him money to tune my piano.  
I appreciated his great attitude despite the situation.  But it's not just personality that shines, David knows his way around a piano. I like him because not only can he tune it with precision (I had another individual tune this piano prior to David but did not do near the job that David did), he can fix the instrument if there's anything wrong with it.  
I've called David in the past with some piano questions when my church was looking for a piano and found him to be very helpful. It's also my intention to pass along David's name to the other churches that I work with.  You can't go wrong here.  I highly recommend David and will be using him for my next tuning.  In fact, we talked about him coming by every 6 months.

David Smith is outstanding in his field.  He is by far the best piano technician that has ever worked on my Boston grand piano which I have owned for over nine years.  In the last year I moved to the Indianapolis area and consider myself fortunate to have connected with Smith Piano Services.  Over the last several months David has not only provided regularly scheduled tunings on my Boston, but has also voiced and regulated the piano to bring it back to its optimal sound performance.  Because I was so pleased with his work and confident in his abilities, I recommended him to my church where he has performed these same services to their Yamaha grand piano, which was in dire straits previous to David bringing his expertise and skills to bear.  I have found David to be extremely personable, responsive, and timely in his communications.  It is a pleasure to know him.  David is not just a skilled technician, he is also a musician with a well trained ear, and this unique combination sets him apart in his field!
