I told Chuck that I was going to sell my lawn tractor. He told me that Bill was in the market for a new one. He had Bill call me so we could work out a trade for work once I moved into my new home. Bill took my lawn tractor and some money up front before starting work. He and his crew did some of the work on my house. He did a poor job laying carpeting, painting/repairing walls, and hanging a storm door (see my review for Effinger Construction for details and pictures). When I asked Bill to come back to finish the work and make repairs, he refused. He refused to return the money I had put down for additional work that he refused to complete.
I called Chuck to get some advice on how to handle this situation. I also wanted him to know I was having problems since he seemed to refer his clients to Bill. I asked Chuck several times to come to my house to see the work that Bill had done. He told me I was the first person to ever complain about Bill's work. He also told me he had never known bill to lay carpet. He questioned whether Bill even laid the carpet or had someone else do it. I wanted him to see for himself so that he could make an informed decision before refering people to Bill again. He refused. He said I was and quot;emotionally dumpingand quot; into the situation because I was crying. He told me that I and quot;would not be happy even if the guy did cartwheels for me.and quot; Again, he never came to look at the work for himself. During our last phone call, he became rude and was yelling at me. I told him I could not talk to him if he was going to treat me like this. I have not heard from him since.
I was really surprised by how Chuck handled himself. When I was listing my house, he referred me to a HVAC company that I had some issues with. He was willing to call the company himself if they didn't resolve the issues. He seemed to be concerned about his reputation and he threatened not to use them anymore. I expected the same out of this situation. He also seems to pride himself on client relationships and future referrals. His emails contain the line and quot; The finest compliment I can receive is a referral from past clients and customers.and quot; I will not be using him again nor would I recommend him to anyone I know. In my opinion, he should not be referring people to his brother because he does not do good work. However, if he is going to use him, I think he should let people know up front that they are related.
