"Thanks for taking time to leave a review, [Member Name Removed]. We're happy to hear you're pleased with your closets and hope you enjoy them for years to come!"
We engaged 3 different companies to provide us with a design. Jennifer Phelan from California Closets came out to measure and design the closet while she was there. It didn't take her long to come up with a plan for the approx 10' x 7' space. She was able to show a visualization of the space on her laptop in 3D and make some minor adjustments to the plan on the spot. It was very pleasant working with her.
All three companies offered plans that were highly similar, but the placement of shelves, long hang, and in particular how they managed one of the corners was the main differences. A significant difference in the planning was that the other two designs had shelf spacing that wasn't consistent width. Jennifer had all the shelving be of consistent width so that we could interchange shelves if we needed too. Her plan just fit what we wanted a bit better. Jennifer I think just had a little better feel for useable space.
Cost wise, one plan was about 1000, CC's was 1600, and another was around 1900. So not the cheapest, but design wise it fit us the bst. I would highly recommend getting multiple designs because you never know what is going to fit your needs, especially with larger closets.
The one thing I did NOT like about California Closets is they treat their plan as proprietary and do not provide you a printout or a sketch of what they planned. If you want to see it, you need to either have them come out again or go to their showroom. The other two companies had no problem sending me their designs. Some of the reasoning is that I could take the plan to someone else and have them do it cheaper. But there is nothing stopping me from taking what I remember of their plan and telling someone else that I wanted X, Y, and Z in the plan. I might not have been able to provide the exact measurements, but I could have come close enough for others to replicate it. Since they came first, how am I expected to be able to reasonable compare their plan from subsequent ones? Sure I could print the other plans and take them to CC's showroom, but that means I'm then comparing and reviewing things with someone from CC there, instead of being able to think about this in private. I can't take my time and review it at home, or look over it with my wife (who couldn't be at the original appointment).
This policy is very customer unfriendly. Its like they are saying their plan is more important to them than to me, the customer who this is actually for. I've never dealt with a company that was doing some work on my house that was unable to provide a plan that I could look over later. How would a generic rough sketch w/o dimensions really be that big of a deal to provide? If the customer is going to take it somewhere else, they would probably find a way to do so, like sketching it out after they leave, or describing it in detail to someone else. Typically, I would not even work with a company that treats me like that. But they did come up with a nice plan and Jennifer was nice to work with, and so we went ahead.
Scheduling got back to me with a day for the install, with understanding that it couldn't be on the weekend, as I needed to tear down the existing shelving. I signed for the work digitally (where they did provide all the plans). The installer showed up the day and time they said he was going to. There was just a single guy to do our closet, and he spent about 3-4 hours getting it all installed nice and neat. Very friendly and personable, he only had a couple of questions that needed answering.
In the end, the closet is exactly what we wanted, although a little taller than I expected (3D visuals on the computer can only show so much), but there wasn't any problem with that. We now have significant more hanging space, and shelf space than before that will do wonders for our organization.
The experience, other than the issue with having a copy of the plans to review, was great from start to finish. We'll redo my daughters closet in the future, and we'd have no problem going back to them. I recommend visiting their showroom in Carmel, if for no other reason than to see they kind of things they can do.

Jennifer came to our house and sat down to talk with us about our goals before going to look at the closet. We live in a 1903 house and storage space is an issue. We're lucky to have a master closet and needed help maximizing our storage. Previous owners had installed rods and cubbies but it wasted the space. Our pie-in-the-sky wish list was drawers, shoe & boot storage, and hanging space. Jennifer spent quite a bit of time in the closet taking measurements. When she came out, she worked on her computer awhile and came up with a 3D plan to show me. She had counted our garments to estimate necessary hanging space and worked with what was left over to work in drawers, shelving for shoes & purses, and slide out laundry bags. Everything we wanted! I asked to make a couple of adjustments and she shifted things around to accommodate them. There were lots of upgraded finishes I could have added, but I liked the basic white woodgrain (Bellisima White Square). Jennifer showed me the upgrade options but didn't give the hard sell. I appreciated that. She told me about promotions that gave us accessories (tie and belt racks and a nifty valet bar) and gladly applied the Angie's List discount - reducing the $4137 list price to $3679. 1/2 of the cost was the required deposit. To save money, we tore out our old system ourselves and provided our own drawer pulls. Brushed nickel pulls would have been included in the cost, but I picked up some crystal ones on sale at Anthropologie.
Since we were doing the demo & painting ourselves, Jennifer suggested scheduling for a Monday - giving us a weekend to do the work and a minimum amount of time without the use of our closet. Installation was about a month from the initial appointment. The installer, Joe, showed up right when he said he would and worked hard to install everything perfectly; working around not-quite-straight molding, a perplexing 1/2' bump out in the middle of one wall, and an oddly placed air return. Plus he was great with our dogs. He finished by mid afternoon. The entire system was custom cut and made for our space, not off the shelf pieces. Our old closet organizer left holes in our wood floor. Joe asked if we had any extra pieces of flooring around and cut pieces to fit into the holes. We were so grateful for this extra customer service! He cleaned up the closet and floor and left it spotless.
We have 30 days to ask for adjustments and a lifetime transferable warranty on the system. To be honest, I hated to spend that much money on something no one ever sees but I love it!
