Jun 2010
Our roof was damaged last June in a hail storm. In July of 2009 we contracted with Advantage to replace our roof. The roof was replaced in October at a cost of almost 16,000. 15745 of this was paid by our home owner's policy insurance. Included in this payment 1660 for 1581 square feet of ice and water shield. We spent the winter in our home in Florida. When we returned in May of 2010 we found that we had a leak in the ceiling of our master bedroom as a result of the leak coming in from the roof. I contacted Advantage by phone on Friday June 4th and they sent out an inspector to look over the damaged area. He transmitted the information to the company. On Friday June 11th Trish who is one of the two owners of the company she called me and said the damage is not covered under warranty because apparently the damage is attributed to an ice accumulation on the roof eventhough the work they did was installing ice and water shield...this isn't covered under warranty? Their warranty covers repairs for one year and the roof was completed in October so it is still under warranty until October of this year. She said since it wasn't covered under their warranty I would have to report this back to my insurance company and they would probably pay me for the damage. I told her I would not call them since they paid the 1660 for ice and water shield. She then had the audacity to tell me on the phone that I was unwilling to take care of my property because I was unwilling to make a claim for a loss my insurance company already paid for. I could hardly believe that the owner of this company could be so rude and continue to make no sense as to why the warranty would not cover this damage. So it was clear to me that the warranty this company gives out is meaningless. In final I would hope that my experience with Advantage and its owners would serve as a caution to others.
Response from ADVANTAGE BUILDING CONTRACTORS
"I have just received notice of this post and wanted to respond immediately. We are a very respectable and highly rated company. We have been certified by the Federal Government as an SBA 8a firm and we would not have been able to obtain that particular certification if our business practices and regard for our customers were consistent with the statements the member posted. First and foremost, I regret that the member is not one of our many happy customers. Obviously, it is our customers that have made us a successful company. I have talked with member on several occasions. We replaced his roof in October 2009. We previously met with his insurance carrier and secured full approval of his roof due to hail. In June 2010, the member called my office and advised that his roof was leaking. I called him back immediately and he explained that his roof did not leak prior to him going to Florida to stay at his second home for several months. He explained that when he returned, he observed that he had interior damage, but that his roof was not leaking. I sent a repair technician to his home. Upon inspection, the repair technician informed me that the roof had previously leaked due to ice damming. When I spoke with the member again, I advised him that ice damming is considered an "Act of God" and that neither our warranty or any other roofing warranty that I am aware of, offers coverage for ice damming. The member was noticeably agitated and verbally expressed that he felt because he paid $16,000 for his roof that we should cover the damage. I explained that regardless of how much or how little someone paid us for service, they deserve to be covered under terms in our written warranty. I further explained that we replaced about 30 roofs in his subdivision all within compparable price ranges, and that we would service any of his neighbors in the same, fair way. I further explained that we maintain a written warranty so that customers have no need to wonder what their terms of coverages are and that for most customers, it provides a high level of comfort. Our warranty specifically excludes ice damming due to the fact that it is an "Act of God" and coverage is offered under all homeowner insurance policies. The member did not want to file an additional claim with his insurance company and that was perfectly understandable. However, he remained very upset that we would not repair his interior drywall. Be advised his roof was no longer leaking and was not leaking at the time we responded due to the ice melting over the previous spring; probably when he was still in Florida. Another point was brought up during my conversation with the member. He expalined that his insurance carrier paid for ice and water shield. We installed ice and water shield in all areas designated (valleys and eaves). In fact, we made the recommendation to have ice and water shield installed even though it was not present before our installation nor was it a code required item. We made the recommendation because we felt it was the best thing to install. Ice and water shield is not yet a code required item in Carmel, Indiana. It should be, but unfortunately many roofing companies do not install ice and watershield unless the insurance companies pay for it. We install this item on EVERY roof and in EVERY climate whether insurance companies pay for it or not. Again, I wish the member could be a happy customer. He advised that we should have taken care of his interior work, whether it was our fault or not, to make a happy customer because he stated that it would only be a "couple of hundred dollars." I do see his point. However, I also feel that we must always move forward in a fair way that is consistent with our warranty and also be willing to do the same for every client."

The rep of company worked with me and my insurance company to get the ok to do the roof because of hail damage. They worked very well with the insurance company, and the roof was replaced within 2 weeks of inital contact. I was very pleased and recommend them highly.

They worked out very well for me. They did what they said they were going to do. The price was fair. When they were finished, they paid special attention to make sure everything was done correctly. They were pretty good.

They gave us an estimate first and then got the job done. They did the roofing first and then a different crew came out to get the siding done. They also installed the soffits and fascia. They also replaced a part of our roof that had rotten. They did a good job. The work was related to the storm damage. The woman from Advantage Building Contractors who gave us the estimate came out to inspect the roof and the siding. She then informed us about the damage. We later on called up our insurance company to come out and evaluate the damage caused. We were pleased and the work went on very smoothly. We haven?t had any problems. They were here when they said that they would be here. The crew that came out was very fast and cleaned up well. Our insurance company took care of the price. Whatever the woman who came out to give an estimate did was really good. I will use their services in the future as well.

They were wonderful and did an excellent job for us. There wasn?t anything that I didn?t like about them. They came in and got our roof done with good quality. It was clean when they were finished. They came back and checked their work and made sure that everything was hooked up.

They showed up as scheduled. Crew was very professional. I had two other companies that were on Angie's List and all three companies would have been good choices. I felt that the materials and warranties Advantage offered were better than the other two.

I was very pleased. When the representative first came out, several things were pointed out that other companies did not mention. I was glad to have the opportunity to weigh my options. Everything went as planned---which was much more than I expected.

My insurance adjuster recommended Advantage. He said that he usually doesn't recommend contractors, but he knew I was having a hard time with other contractors and he knew Advantage would take care of me because he meets with their reps all the time and sees their work. Great recommendation! Thanks!

I was very impressed with the quality of work. Advantage came highly recommended and for good reason. I was very surprised that everything went better than I planned. They are definitely the "go to" company for working with insurance companies and my house looks great!

Very organized company. Not typical for roofers. I was very pleased with how they kept me informed. I found them listed with the BBB and NRCA (National Roofing Contractors Assn). Work was definitely first class and they live up to their website motto it seems---Expect More, Get More. Try them.

My roof was leaking. State Farm inspected it and said it was not due to the storms. My brother Kenny told me that Advantage had done his roof several years ago and they were very good with the insurance companies and excellent with workmanship. I called them and two other companies. Advantage was the only company who called back the same day AND showed up ON TIME the NEXT DAY. I worked with Kim. She told me not to worry because she would meet with State Farm on a reinspection. When my adjuster got here, he already knew Kim from other claims so I felt even better. When they were done, my roof was approved. They did a great job on the roof! I have never seen people take such good care of a yard during the work. I also got a special warranty because they are GAF Certified. Excellent job. I'd highly recommend them to other family members and friends.

If only I'd checked Angie's List first! It was a comedy of errors. After the first guy to help us got fired from Advantage, the second misplaced our insurance check. The work took months to complete. They left shingles on my driveway. The gutter installers showed up on the day scheduled, but without notifying me that they were there. I was unnerved by strange men walking around in my yard (I'm a woman, and was home alone with my 2-year-old). I'm glad the dog wasn't out at the time! Later, I realized that, while the house roof was done, the shed roof was not. Examining the papers, I realized it wasn't included in the estimate (my bad for not catching it sooner, I suppose, but that's their job). They flatly refused to do an estimate on it; refused to repair it (they weren't taking any 'new' jobs); after several attempts, they still haven't even given me information on the type of shingle they used, so I can't even match it for whoever does do the work for me. Avoid them.

The whole process when very well with their representative handling most of it. She coordinated most of the work with our insurance agent and our mortgage company. She was very flexible about meeting us at night after work and very good about calling us back that day. The work itself looks really nice and the workers did a great job of cleaning up and asking us where we would like things set. They were very professional. I was very worried about doing this, it seems overwhelming when you get all of the paperwork from all of the different agencies, but it has gone very smoothly and we only paid our deductible. So the price paid above is really what the work cost, but our out-of-pocket was only $1000. That said, it's hard for me to say if we got what we paid for, I really have no idea! I didn't shop around at all and I didn't really look at the numbers in the estimate because they weren't for us, they were for the insurance company. That's why I left it ''n/a''.
