I'd like to start this review by saying the men who did the work did a wonderful job. They were efficient, friendly, courteous, and punctual. My issue is not with them, but with their boss. So boss-man, if you're the one reading this, DO NOT BLAME YOUR EMPLOYEES. They were great.
When they initially came to look at our plumbing in the beginning of the month they told me they needed to check with their boss for a price quote on the septic job. The boss said it would cost between $700-$900 because it would take 4-6 hours worth of labor, and they charge $150 per hour for labor.
They did the work today, were there for 2 hours, and charged us $800. That was surprisingly high since it only took them 2 hours but they charged us what their boss told them to charge. They said they could bring the price down to $700. The boss then called me and I questioned why the price was so high considering labor is $150 per hour, which for 2 hours should've been $300. The boss got angry and defensive and said he was going to jack the price up to $835 because we were arguing with him and said we could either pay it or not.
We weren't "arguing." We wanted an accurate invoice with the figures he charged us and a rationale for the charges. He made one up on the fly and charged us $565 for 2 hours of labor. The price at the bottom of the invoice was $835.50 but when you added up all the numbers (for the labor, machine fee, parts, truck charge, and tax) it only equals $805.50. I guess the $30 extra is for being a defiant woman? Probably not good to put that in writing I guess.
The plumbers who did the work were baffled by their boss's erratic response. We tried to pay the invoice in full (not wanting collectors to come after us or something) but they said the boss told them to refuse payment and if we wanted to pay we could send a check (?!). The boss was extraordinarily unprofessional and rude. We have no idea what to do now. I want the plumbers to be paid for the work they did today. I certainly hope their boss pays them fairly and if he doesn't, that they complain to the state Fair Labor Standards folks.
I give the employees A's for everything and the boss F's for everything so I divided my score evenly.
To the plumbers: if you decide to start your own business, please let me know because I would definitely have you come out again. But if you're still with Paul Young, I'm going to have to take my business elsewhere.
The only weird thing was being told in addition to the service fee charge, an additional $5 was going to be added for a truck fee. I would assume those expenses would simply be included in the basic service fee charge so maybe Young's might just say what the total fee is without parceling it out like that.
Fast, friendly and efficient - I will definitely use them again!
We have used Paul Young Plumbing for years so we called them at once. They had the new water heater installed the next day.
$10,000 paid to Paul Young Plumbing. Most of those visits are described in Angie’s list posts.
