After a couple more days I received a call and was told that they took the car out to test it out after the repair and it began overheating. It was then determined that the water pump, timing belt, and head gasket would need replaced which was quoted to me at $3,000. I was shocked but when I was told the car would not drive without these repairs I agreed to the price after talking with my husband. They began making these repairs and took a little over a week and a half before I heard back from them again.
This time I was informed that they had recieved a call from the machine shop where they had sent one of the parts from my car and that they were told the part could not be ground down anymore and simply would not work in the car without causing it to explode. I was told that I had two options, but that the only realistic option was to replace the engine with a new engine being quoted at $8,000 and a used engine they had located for $5,300 plus tax. I was devestated but had to agree to the used engine replacement in order to have the car that I desperately needed back for work. So I called them back and discussed the options again, agreeing to the used engine for "$5,300 plus tax" as I was quoted and I asked if that would be the final price. I was told that it should be very close and that he had to speak with the boss and refigure the invoice. I asked that he call me witht the final price the following day which would have been a Friday, he said he would call back with the final figures by Monday at the latest. I did not receive a call the following day or the following Monday, it was 2 weeks before I was called again.
I was called 2 weeks later and told that they had replaced the engine but that it had come from the place they bought it from with many parts removed and cut during the process of removing it from the car that it had been in when they ordered it, so the man on the phone told me that it was "$6,700 and the engine is already in the car, we are still waiting on a
few more parts but that shouldn't cost much more." I was beyond words at this point and trying to hold back tears. I tried to ask how the cost of what the supplier had done to the engine was that bad and I was simply told that they "never know what they're going to get." But somehow I was supposed to take on the cost of the damaged engine? I will admit that I was emotional due to my pregnancy and tried to get off the phone as soon as possible.
I let my husband know of the situation and he called the following day to talk to a manager, trying to understand how the price had gone up so much from what we had agreed upon and why we were responsible for the damaged engine when we were promised a used but perfectly good engine with no damages. He was told that they never knew what they were going to get and that they had already tried to bring the price down by several hundred dollars just to get it to the current price, and when he asked why they did not call us when they discovered it was going to cost much more than estimated and was not what we had ordered the man on the phone avoided the question and got angry with my husband. When asked why no one had given us a call to report the final price, we were told that it had taken a "few days to get the invoice figured out." Which was in fact 2 weeks. After several minutes of my husband asking these and similar questions to try to understand how this had happened and why we were not consulted before the engine was installed and it was too late to make any decisions, the man on the phone said that he would have to call the owner and let us know anything further. After around 10 minutes we received a call back from the man we had spoken to previously and were told that they could only bring the price down to $5,900, he said that was all that they could do and there was still one more part to be added but that it should not cost much at all.
We were called about a week later and told that the final parts were in and it was ready for pick up and payment. My husband went in to pick up the car and write out the check for payment, upon trying to use the Angie's List coupon he was denied until some other form of management came out to the desk and grudgingly accepted it when my husband stated that we had been
promised we could use it from the start. The final bill after the coupon was around $5,500.
"As you can see from the other reviews on our profile we work extremely hard to provide first class service, professionalism, and reasonable pricing to all of our clients. In fact, we go to great lengths to ensure customer satisfaction. In this circumstance, much of what occurred was out of our control and we are sorry for any inconvenience experienced. However, we do value the feedback provided and look forward to using it to strengthen our services and customer experiences."
The staff at Autochoice is always friendly and polite. When Adam called to tell me what was wrong, he took a decent amount of time to explain what was wrong, why it was important, and what they recommended be done to fix it.
One of the things I like is how thorough they are - they drive the car before working on it, and also afterward to make sure that they fix the problem. I feel fairly confident that they do a good job (it is always so hard to know regarding costs, etc) - and will continue to use this garage for my car repairs.
Very happy. I now can have heat in my car.
