It has been four days now since Arnold Asphalt graded, repaired and paved my washed out gravel driveway. I have a driveway approximately 1/8 mile long with a large area in front of the garage for turn around space and parking. On top of that my drive is mostly downhill to the house and winds through the woods. Today I am one happy camper. I definitely made the right choice hiring John Arnold and his crew. They are not only hard working professionals but artists as well. John went out of his way to allay any concerns I had including checking out the location the night before paving to make sure all was set to go. John proved that his word is his bond. I also cannot say enough good things about the crew of helpers. They were hard working, obviously experienced, polite and diligent in their work. After a nine hour day plus travel time the last of the job was installed as good as the first.. As far as I am concerned, Arnold Asphalt is the only paver around.

I first contracted Arnold Asphalt in 2018 to revive my wore out drive way from neglect from previous owner. John Arnold utilized a high sand content product to fill in the imperefections. In 2021, I went back to John, because of the high quality job he did for me in 2018 and had him apply a maintenance seal on the drive way. John also made sure the sidewalk foot traffic was avoided on the driveway by roping off the area with string and pink plastic tails tied to the string. My Wife and I were pleased with the price / value of the service performed. Yes, I will contact John again when it is time for my next maintenance coating :)

John and his team provided a great result at a reasonable price They communicate very well, were responsive to our questions and were flexible with our project-related requests. John explained every aspect of the project well - which included installing a French drain to move water away from a low spot on the driveway and pre-surface repairs of significant cracks in the drive before resurfacing. John also explained how best to maintain our driveway in the years ahead. I highly recommend Arnold Asphalt for driveway paving and resurfacing.

Wonderful! Work was done in a very timely manner after contracting. Crew showed up when promised and did a beautiful job. Owner was on hand to supervise. He also answered all questions, before and after, immediately. He was very polite and professional, as are all his employees. And finished work looks great! Cost was very reasonable.

John and his team did an amazing job! Their bid was half the price of another competitors, without sacrificing quality or safety. The driveway and turnaround look beautiful! The job was done in less than a day, so there was very little impact to our daily routine. I would absolutely recommend Arnold Asphalt for anyone's paving needs....thanks to John and his amazing team!

Arnold Asphalt was hired to do two layers of asphalt over my current gravel driveway. Water was a primary concern for me, and they handle that exceptionally well. Job looks fantastic. They executed on time and I can confidently recommend them. K. Fulford Bloomington, IN

We set a date to have our driveway Serviced. Arnold was on the time exactly as he said they he would be. They did a great job. The price was the best pricing that I had found. John was very informative about pavement installs. I have seen other driveways done by the Arnold's and was one of the reason I chose to call him, and after meeting Mr. Arnold I chose to go with their services. When finished the job was exceptional and they cleaned up before they left. I can say with confidence, he gained my future business and I would recommend him to anyone.

On October 4th, 2012 my husband and I paid John Arnold $500 to apply 2 coats of sealant to our driveway. The first coat was completed and some of the second coat was applied. Due to the fact that the first coat on a section of the driveway on the north side of our house was not completely dry, Mr. Arnold told us that he would need to come back at a later date to apply the rest of the second coat. Unfortunately, I paid him in full before he left that day. When he didn't return by the end of October, I assumed it was because there hadn't been enough consecutive days of suitable weather for sealing.
By mid-spring when weather was warming, we expected someone from Arnold Asphalt to call. Nothing happened. I called him mid-June about our unfinished driveway, my husband called him mid-August. Both times Mr. Arnold stated that he was busy and actually said he would not commit to a date to apply the remaining sealant. By late August, I decided to put something in writing. I wrote a letter reminding him of the situation, the timeline of events/our contacts, and set a deadline for him to call us to schedule a time to finally finish the job. I described my flexible daytime schedule and said that my husband and I were available in the evenings too (as at least twice I had witnessed two Arnold Asphalt employees working well past 6:00 on a driveway at a neighbor's house). There was no response. On Sept. 6, I called Mr. Arnold. He accused me of harassing him, told me he wouldn't be finishing the job, would send us a partial refund, and did not want to hear from me again. He did not complete the job he had been paid to do, he did not provide the partial refund he promised, and rather than fulfilling any of his promises or commitments, chose to become rude, abrasive, and uncooperative. We waited over a year from the original October date before suggesting that the next step should be to settle the dispute in a small claims court. He did not respond to this. I have certainly learned my lesson about paying in full before a job has been completed. It was our experience with this company that motivated us to join Angie's List and warn others.

Heavy rain storms caused some delay but this was in no way the fault of the provider. He and his crew did an excellent job and we are so very pleased. He returned our initial phone call quickly. He came to work when he said he would and he stayed with the job until complete, some days working long hours. We feel we have made a new friend. He has a wonderful personality. We will definitely use his service in the future when we have another area asphalted.

Mr Arnold came out to give us an estimate and suggested that we tear out part of our old driveway and replace with new. Other parts would be paved over. We liked the fact that the price was right and he wanted to tear out the old which others hadn't suggested. Work was done on a timely manner to begin with but when we finished the drive was rough and not very smooth. He explained that he was using larger stone in the paving and it would last longer but it was still awfully rough looking. He came back and sealed the new paving and ended up repaving part of the drive which we appreciated. On part of the job he used young kids (teenagers) and just wasn't very professional. He said he would come back to fix a couple concerns but never did. By the time we were finished, I didn't really care if he came back or not.

"[Member Name Removed] is a great guy and when I came across this review I was disappointed. He and his wife both were very pleasant to work for and pretty much everything he said is accurate from his point of view. For the reader who doesn’t know what happened in this snafu… you only have to pull out an almanac; we set the record for rain this year, 3rd largest ever. I think that, combined with how far from the plant his home was located, and a decision at the last minute to do a stretch of asphalt that was about 200 ft long that we didn’t agree on initially, put us into a situation where we needed to move quickly. Again, it rained for 3 months straight here in Bloomington and getting in and out of a jobsite was terribly difficult to say the least. I started calling it the monsoon year, it has been that bad. Again [Member Name Removed] and his wife again are the greatest and I am sorry things didn’t turn out better for them but I did try and I spent considerable amounts of money and performance to appease the situation of a rough texture that’s certainly characteristic for heavier grades of binder, its stronger asphalt used for hilly areas; their whole driveway is on a large hill going up and they didn’t want smooth slick asphalt like #11 asphalt binder will texturally give. Not to mention the 200 feet they wanted to go ahead and pave anyway, was not dug out. We had to hurry and wedge this area all the way down. [Member Name Removed] if you ever read this I apologize to you. I had my sons with me helping on the tear out but the paving job was men, my crew who are experienced even in situations where we are dealing with deadlines and extra work loads that were not planned. I figured the boys could help tear out. [Member Name Removed] nor his wife cared for the rough texture of base asphalt much after the install. I corrected what I could and even sealed the whole drive going down to help with the texture that helped very much so. The lower part of his asphalt I ended up repaving all together because I was disappointed with how that turned out. He didn’t even have to ask, I just paid out of my pocket 2000 for that. Combined with the extra paving and the sealant treatment - [Member Name Removed] paid about 10,000 and got a 400 ft. driveway redone with the top part all torn and reinstalled and 2 passes made at the bottom and a sealcoat done by squeegee. I feel he came out way ahead and am willing to do more performance to correct any issues he has… So [Member Name Removed] if you get this or see this let me know if there is anything I can do other than what I have and let’s set aside this indifference between me and you. You have to admit it was a hard year with all the rain and things. Rain got in the way and I figured you understood all that. It about killed us all this year. My apologies again. Feel free to call and I will make right anything I can. I sincerely mean that. Respectfully"

John Arnold seemed very knowledgeable and made a good case for why we should choose his company over the others in town. We hired him and felt good about the decision, until the work was performed. John was not at our house while the work was performed. Maybe he could have prevented the mistakes that were made. His workers did not clean our driveway first and were very sloppy around the edges. They sealed over dirt, leaves, sticks, mulch, and part of our lawn. Whatever was on the driveway before had been covered. I immediately called John up and had him come see it. He took responsibility for the edge where his workers had sealed over the dirt. I showed him where the asphalt was pealing off in the middle of the driveway. He said it looked like damage from a bike's kickstand, but not from any misapplication. John left, agreeing to patch the edges and the one peeling area. John then blew us off for the next month. He was a no-show, no-call four different times. Finally, I wrote him the following e-mail: ---------------------- This is becoming a weekly e-mail. During our initial conversation, you told me you would call me that week to set up a time to repair the edges of our driveway and patch the cracks. I never heard from you. You wrote me on 9/26 saying you'd be out some time that week. Again, no word from you. You wrote me again on 10/8 saying you'd take care of the problems that week. Now that week has passed. We've been patient, but the dates you tell me keep passing without any communication from you. When can we expect these repairs to be made? I don't want to sit down next Sunday and rewrite this same e-mail. ---------------------- He never responded to this e-mail, but did send someone out the next weekend. They patched to edge and small spot in the middle. It's been six months since Arnold Asphalt performed the initial sealing and our driveway is a disaster. The sealcoat is coming off of every part of our driveway. They did not stand by their service and we will now have to pay the price of having it redone.
Response from Arnold Asphalt
"[Member named removed] seemed like a great guy to work for. He had just re-done his home; looked good too, and he wanted the drive to be in tip top shape. The drive was small. He had a few complaints that we resolved but there was one.... one in particular that I couldn’t resolve with the man and no matter how much I tried to explain it to him, it just didn’t register, he just didn’t get it. The contention was a crack that had developed in his driveway. He felt that because we had sealed the aggregate that the sealant itself was the cause. I reassured him it isn’t the case. I pointed out that in that year we had a very dry summer and roots from trees will dry the ground out and the ground move. It happens about every year and the phones ring off the hook with people asking why they are getting cracks in their driveways and is there anything we can do to help. You really can’t help Mother Nature and you can only advise about preventive maintenance aspects and what you can do afterwards. This gentleman really believed it was the sealant cracking and not the asphalt. I pulled out a pocket knife and buried the blade into the crack to reassure him it was the asphalt that had the crack not the sealant. I buried the 3’ blade. You would think seeing is believing - but he still didn’t get it. I informed him he could call around to other contractors and get their opinions but they would tell him the same. I apologized and made right anything I could but to no avail. In terms of performance I would above and beyond but I could appease this situation. Respectfully"

The worst job ever! I called and complained and the owner told me to give some time so it would dry and look better. Less than one year later, a huge patch of the driveway came out leaving a big hole in my driveway and getting stuck on the car's tire. I was really upset so I called the owner and asked him to re-do the work. His reply was: "Are you out of your mind? Get off my phone!"
