concrete repair

McNally & Sons Concrete did a new driveway and steps at my home in August 2015. Early in 2017, I emailed Beau McNally letting him know that the steps were beginning to pock and chip. Beau came and looked at the steps, and told me that It looked like something was done during the finishing process that shouldn't have been done (I don't remember exactly what, but I seem to remember Buea saying that maybe finishing was performed while there was water on the surface), and that was the cause of the pocking and chipping. There was NO MENTION of salt being the cause of the problems with the steps. In December 2017/January 2018, I noticed that the driveway was pocking and chipping, just like the steps had done. On February 2, 2018, I emailed Beau. After some emailing back and forth with Heather (office staff?), Beau and a rep from the concrete company came to look at my driveway on March 9, 2018. I had to email them twice more (3/16/18, 3/23/18) to get a response. Heather (not Beau) called and stated that Beau and the concrete rep looked at my driveway and decided that the chipping and pocking (they called it scaling) was due to salt being used on the driveway for ice. I find this interesting, because no one even asked me if I had ever used salt on the driveway. She stated that someone from the Geist area called their office with a similar problem, and that they were going to file a claim against Safe Salt. She suggested that I file a claim with Safe Salt. I told her that I didn't use Safe Salt. I went on to tell her that I've only used salt once or twice since the driveway was poured. I further stated that no one ever told me not to use salt on the driveway. She said there was nothing more they could do. I filed a complaint with the Indiana Attorney General. Unfortunately, there is nothing they can do. Interestingly, Heather (in McNally and Sons response to the Attorney General) stated that she asked me if I had used a deicer on the driveway before telling me about the Geist customer. This is not true. She did not ask me if I had used deicer. I told her I had used deicer only a couple of times AFTER she stated that the Geist customer had filed a claim with Safe Salt. Also, in their response to the Attorney General, McNally and Sons stated that the scaling damage is limited to the “drip patterns around a parked car and tire track.” Sagamore Ready Mix, the concrete supplier, also stated in a letter to McNally and Sons that “the scaling does appear to have been caused by a concentration of deicing salts brought in from roads and dripping off parked cars.” While a majority of the scaling has occurred where vehicles are parked, there is scaling in several other areas of the driveway. This is also a bit different than what I was told when Heather called me. She implied in her telephone call that the problems with my driveway were due to my use of deicer. She made no mention of deicer from roads dripping from cars onto the driveway. My point is that there are some inconsistencies in the explanation given for the cause of the scaling problem on the driveway. Sagamore Ready Mix also stated that “the application of a penetrating sealer is also recommended prior to the concrete going through its first winter to prevent water and deicers from penetrating the surface.” Why didn’t anyone from McNally and Sons recommend this to me? Bottom line: Stay away from McNally and Sons. I have a driveway that was poured in August 2015 that is a crumbling mess, and they refuse to do anything about it.
