"I'm sorry that [Member Name Removed] feels as though we did not meet his expectations. I would like to address his formal complaint, but feel it is only fair to note that even now, that 2 of the 3 arborvitaes installed that he is requesting be replaced, they are stressed, but still not dead, and all 3 were alive one from date of installation. To start, our Limited Warranty states "Affordable Trees, LLC guarantees trees for a period of (1) one year from the date of installation when we perform the installation. Should your tree(s) perish within (1) one year of installation, Affordable Trees, LLC will replace the original tree one time only at no cost with a tree of equal or lesser value." [Member Name Removed]'s Installation was performed on 11/13/14. By [Member Name Removed]'s own omission on 11/17/15, (and in his complaint to you) all 3 had not perished, and it was beyond our guarantee already at that time. As well, clearly 2 still have not perished as indicated by his complaint "and the other two are about to join him." I think it is important to point out, On 11/3/15 John indicated in email "the above condition would not warrant a replacement". [Member Name Removed] emailed back on 11/9/15 "What exact condition does warrant it" and John replied on 11/10/15 "The evergreen must be dead. We do not guarantee appearance". To sum up, on 11/17/15, your arborvitaes were not dead, you were beyond the guarantee and your emails had been addressed. As late as 11/10/15, per John, stating your arborvitaes did not warrant replacement. I'm not sure what further information should have been provided regarding this issue. He is correct that we do offer Tree Care guidelines in our emails to him as well as on our website. Trees are living things; they need water and food. He states "it's not like I've strategically not maintained these few". I point out, each tree (such as in humans), will have it's own growing requirements, and can be effected by many things such as water, light, temperature, air, pests and cultural practices, even same varieties planted in close proximity of one another. The reason photo was sent is it exhibits a row of arborvitaes that show the outcome of drought stress, all in a row, all same variety, exhibiting different stages of stress and some thriving. Again, I'm sorry if he feels I fell short of his expectations but as the correspondence shows all emails were addressed. Moving forward, I suggested he continue to monitor the water provided. A drip hose works great, keeping in mind arborvitaes prefer to remain moist, in fact they thrive under these conditions. Also, if he has not already done so this season, I would recommend adding some nutrients like a 12-12-12 granular that can be picked up at your local hardware store."
WARNING: WE RECOMMEND YOU DO NOT USE THIS PROVIDER! THEY HAVE NOT COMMUNICATED OR OPERATED WITH INTEGRITY. Although the ordering process was quick and easy, Affordable Trees missed their delivery commitment dates on three occasions. Had we known this in advance, we would have selected another provider. We later found out that the company did not carry many of its trees in stock and had minimal influence over its suppliers in Michigan. When the tree finally arrived (nearly one month late), Affordable Trees delivered it to us without inspecting it. As a result, we received a diseased tree contaminated with spider mites. Their staff also did not comply with their own planting guidance. Within 48 hours of the tree being planted, we became concerned and contacted John at Affordable Trees. He told us not to worry and that we should give the tree extra water (beyond what his staff had previously advised). When the tree continued to struggle, we contact John several more times. Each time, he declined to inspect his staff's work or the health of our tree. Given the lack of assistance and cooperation from Affordable Trees, we had to contact other Angie's List tree care companies for assistance. Each company confirmed that Affordable Trees sold us a defective tree and that they did not plant it appropriately. Given the recurring problems with Affordable Trees, we eventually submitted a replacement claim (as allowed under their one year warranty program). Although Affordable Trees acknowledged several of its mistakes, the company refused to treat or replace our tree. They wouldn't even stop by and look at our tree. Ultimately, we knew we were in trouble once the owner (John) refused to return our calls. Given that this company sold us a defective tree and didn't stand behind its warranty program, we are very disappointed and would encourage potential customers to hire a different provider.
the burlap, and the wire cage. Of course, the reason this wasn’t done is so that labor costs can be reduced. I had to pay another party to fix their mistakes.
Affordable offers a 1 year guarantee of the trees. This really doesn’t add value as most trees will live at least a year. However,
their planting method will cause the tree roots to not expand into the soil and the tree roots will just wrap around the tree
base. Also, their method does not remove the excess top soil caused by machine digging go the trees which results in the
tree being planted too deep. This negative outcome may take several years to occur and by then the guarantee is expired.
"We completed an installation for the member on 10/7/12 of which there was no complaint registered by him at this time with our on-site crew manager or via phone to office. Balance was paid in full which further indicates satisfaction with trees and installation. It was not until 10/22 he contacted us with his dissatisfaction with our planting method. We stated when dealing with the installation of large trees, we believe removing wire baskets at planting time is not necessary to assure growth and survival of large tree roots. University of Florida states "Baskets made from heavy gauge wire are often used to help hold a B&B root ball intact during shipping and handling. Wire also allows for the tree to be picked up by the root ball instead of the trunk. This is a very effective means of ensuring that roots inside the root ball remain intact with soil. Wire in baskets degrades slowly in soil, and can be intact 20 years after planting. However the welds typically degrade sooner. There is no research documenting the detrimental effects of wire baskets on trees. In fact, some research shows that roots engulf the wire (see above photo) with little apparent harm to the tree (Lumis 1990; Watson 1994). Strapping and non-biodegradable string can be left on the tree along with the basket as long as someone returns to remove strapping and string a year later. If root flare is too deep in the root ball so proper planting sets the wire above grade then the wire above grade should be removed.” In closing, we harvested good quality trees and performed installation based upon research supported from reliable resources. We returned on 11/7, our scheduled date, to correct what he perceived as a problem, but the member entered his home and did not return. Even so, we still have every intention of visiting his property this spring to evaluate and remove any residual burlap. I believe this not only shows our willingness to work with the member but shows that we have gone above and beyond in order to satisfy. We hope this clarifies and warrants a satisfactory resolution to this situation."
"I have followed up with this member as of today to discuss all outstanding issues. We are very apologetic for the situation, but I feel have handled as quickly and as professionally as possible to harvest a new Canaan fir to replace one she did not originally want. There have been mistakes made on our part, however we have done the best we can to fix and restore to a good standing. We continue to put options on the table to fix the issue, and we hope one day we can return to a good standing."
"We apologize for the inconvenience. Our records show as soon as pictures were sent, our specialist contacted the member on June 16th, 2009. The Arborvitae were analyzed through the pictures sent and noted that they were slightly distressed, however not a concern or threat for the health of the evergreens. Because trees are very hardy and resilient, and because they are living things, we ask for the customer to work with us on insuring the quality of the product. We offer over-the-phone customer service as well as 24/7 e-mail support. Also to help advise and educate the consumer, we provide monthly reminders on tree care as well as a blog featuring common seasonal tree issues. The member's guarantee is not up until 12/03/09, and we work hard to provide sufficient advice on watering/pruning/fertilizing until that time (and beyond) to guarantee the life and quality. The statement "whenever arborvitaes are brown they never grow back," is false. According to our research/experience, and a certified horticulturist amongst North Dakota State University, arborvitaes do in fact grow back after proper pruning. Because of the dissatisfaction the member has expressed in our actions, our tree specialist came out free of charge to further analyze the Arborvitae. The tree specialist did not note any significant issues and assured us the quality does not warrant a replacement. Pruning was suggested as well as adjusting watering. We will continue to offer e-mail/phone service over the condition and care of the arborvitaes. If needed, and if no improvement is noted, we will also extend the guarantee to ensure the member's happiness in the quality of her arborvitae."
