THe contractor that installed the unit has been professional and responded in a timely manner to all service work. It is the equipment that he represents (TRANE) that is defective and poor designed. Now after going through Consumer Reports I wish I would have purchased and installed a Rheem furnace. I dont know about thier design or quality but it would have been 30% cheaper to start with and the quality cound not be any worse.
Description of Work: I had a new furnace and AC installed in July 2008 because my 20 year old AC compressor seized up. My furnace was old Carrier furnace was still working but the contractor pursuaded me to replace it as well and I saw his point. In March 2009 (still heating season in Chicago) the control board in the Trane furnace went bad and needed to be replaced. Same board in the summer of 2010 and again in summer of 2011. The last time being out of warrantee. 3 boards in 3 years. Now during Labor Day weekend 2011 the module on the blower motor went out. Another repair, two in the same summer. When the blower stops on this model there is no safety or communication to tell the AC to shut down so it continues pumping freon even after the entire furnace turns into a block of ice. Then when you notice the AC is not cooling and investigate and shut down the system. The block begins to melt and the water goes into the furnace all over the electronics. This is a design flaw the engineers at TRANE should have caught before ever shipping furnaces. With this design flaw it is only a matter of time until the AC unit outside needs new parts as well. I have been very dissatisfied with this furnace and believe it was poorly designed or "designed to fail"! Had I known that when I purchased a new furnace I was becoming a reoccurring revenue stream to the TRANE AUTHORIZE contractor that installed it I would have lived with my old furnace. That old energy inefficient Carrier model had a lower annual cost than my new efficient model with its built in failures. The service tech says that all the models all have the same problems and this is standard operating procedure. Boy am I sorry I purchased a TRANE. The labor and replacement parts are like paying 2 more Chicago January natural gas bills a year, some saving with the poorly designed energy efficiecent model.
