Our home had been having sewer backups to the laundry room floor drain with increasing frequency in the last few years necessitating calls to various rodding companies to help unclog the line about every 6 months. Following our last backup in early October, which, of course, occurred on a Sunday, our aged, root infiltrated and damaged lateral line was pronounced "nearly impassible" by a major brand-name plumbing service who we called for help. Within the next few days, we gathered both repair options and estimates from a variety of sewer line contractors in the area. The options basically boiled down to one of two: either excavate the entire line and replace with new PVC or try a solution known as "trenchless" sewer lining. In considering our options, we also had to factor in some extenuating circumstances, including that our main sewer line tap sits more than 12' below our parkway and directly beneath a large 50-year old maple tree. The tree is a major feature of the property and, according to our municipality, would have had to be replaced if damaged or uprooted in the excavation process. Additionally, because of the depth of the main sewer line and the obstacle presented by the tree, estimates for excavating the line were around $8,000 - $10,000 - significantly higher than the lining option. Of the four or five companies who provided estimates, we choose to hire Infrastructure Solutions of Yorkville, Illinois to undertake the job of lining our later sewer line. The rationale, in large part, was because the price was right, coming in at a couple of hundred dollars less than their competitors, and because owner Randy Harker was the utmost in professionalism and courtesy. From my initial phone message, Mr. Harker responded in less than 30 minutes and by that afternoon had his crew out to jet-rod (clean) the line and get us flowing again for the upcoming weekend. Following the cleaning, Mr. Harker scoped the line and provided a full estimate by the next work day (which was a Monday). We agreed on the price and set a date for the following week. Due to an emergency call, Mr. Harker pushed the start date of our job back one day (his is a small crew and shop), however, throughout the rescheduling he was communicative, courteous and apologetic for the delay. The work began promptly at 7:30 am the next day, whereupon the crew jet-rodded the line once again and installed the first segment of liner from foundation to cleanout. Using our existing cleanout, the crew shot a resin-coated synthetic liner - resembling the material a broken arm might be cast in - through our existing lateral line up to the foundation to the point where the 6-inch clay pipe transitions to 4-inch cast iron. They followed that with a bladder that, once inflated, forces the coated liner against the full circumference of the interior of the clay pipe. The bladder is then heated and the liner is "baked" or cooked in place for 3 to 4 hours hardening to the strength of PVC. The following day, Mr. Harker and crew returned to install the second segment of liner from cleanout to the city main line tap. Again baking the liner in place for about 3 or 4 hours to allow it to harden and form to the clay pipe. Unfortunately, due to a "misfire" the first day of work with the liner, the crew had to return for a third day of work (not the norm) to reline the length of pipe running from the foundation to the cleanout. This additional work to correct the error resulted in no additional charges and, in fact, the final total was less than the original estimate by about $200. Lastly, Mr. Harker stood by his work, providing us with a DVD video of the completed line for our records. In all, we would strongly recommend Infrastructure Solutions, Inc. and we are quite happy with the work that Mr. Harker and his crew were able to perform in remedying our later sewer line problems. Randy was easy to work with, communicative, attentive to detail and a consummate professional.
Description of Work: After multiple sewer back ups, we contracted Infrastructure Solutions, Inc. to perform a "trenchless" lining of our 6" x 48' lateral sewer line from the house foundation to the main city tap. The line was almost entirely comprised of the 45 year old, original, clay tile pipe, now badly cracked, damaged and overrun with root infiltration. The installation process took advantage of a mid-line sewer cleanout installed by the previous homeowners. Using the cleanout for access, Infrastructure Solutions jet rodded (cleaned) the line free of all the roots and over three days installed a 48' liner (MaxLIner brand) which will now reinforce the existing clay pipe, keep out tree roots and is said to be as strong as PVC.
