James did good work for me in carpentry in the past.  He installed a couple of doors and did some aluminum trim around windows. he was reasonable and did good work. This was a bathroom floor,  and  complicated  because of clearance with a mirror door.  It was porcelain tile.  I mentioned that this is thick tile, difficult to cut.  He was adamant that he could do it.  I also bought ditra and used it mostly for the fact that it was thin.  He was very negative about the ditra.  Other professional tile guys say that they wish all of their jobs would pay for ditra.  All the materials for the floor were on site.  He however was grumbling and complaining.  The tiles were 12 by 24.  I noticed that he was not back buttering.  I mentioned this to him.  He was insulted but called a friend who is a floor guy.  The friend told him to back butter.  By the way the floor was level except one spot.  I noticed that the tiles in that spot were 1/8 in low.  I mentioned how bad it looked.  After the grout was in, the tiles were almost all lipped, meaning not smooth.  The grout did not match up even on some tiles.  When you walk on it you feel the ridges.  You can see that they are not level.  Up and down everywhere.  45 sq ft of unlevel tiles.
Besides this, I cleaned up after his huge mess, laid drop cloth on the carpet although he told me that I should just pay the carpet cleaners to take care of the dirt.  I told him that I just had cleaned them.  There was dust from his cutter everywhere.  There was big drips and smudges of mortar, on every surface.
He did two things ok.  His cuts were ok, and he installed some shelves for me that werre ok.  I bought him a diamond blade because his wore out so when he went to pick up the blade, he also purchased some shelves.  I paid for this.
When he installed the trim on the mirror door, instead of letting me know that the trim was cracked and that the old paint was on that trim, he installed the nasty old trim.  Yes, I was at work, but only a phone call away.  So also remembering that he told me that he could work with porcelain, he installed the mirror guide at the bottom by drilling new holes into the guide and drilling into the grout line instead of the tile.  He only installed it with two screw when there are 6 existing holes.  He used unmatching black screws and spackled the hole in the brass trim with white spackling.
When I inquired what was going on, he said that not even a mason bit could go through the porcelain.  He didn't want to crack the tile, he said.  Do I need to buy a mason diamond bit for you to fix this?  I asked.  He did not reply.  He got very greedy for the money.  He demanded that I pay before he put a lean on my house.  He was texting me with rants about judging.  My guy friends and family insisted that I pay him, rather than suffer from his vengeance.
He ranted about all the favors he did by installing the shelves, etc.  How he did extra work because the ditra takes thin set twice.  I may be demanding about how I want things done but I always pay my bill.  I paid him in order to never deal with him again. Now I am stuck with a floor that is not level.
