I called Sam Grossman at the suggestion of a friend, who had used him to tune a piano at her home in Deerfield a couple of times. I contacted Sam by phone and left a voice mail, and he returned my call the same day. I told him that we had an out-of-tune piano with sustaining pedal that seemed partially stuck. After asking a few general questions about the piano, he advised that the tuning charge would be $120 and that he'd have to take a look at the pedal issue to determine how much that repair cost would be, caveating that it may require a return visit. We scheduled the appointment for the next week, and he said he would call an hour before the appointment to ensure that someone was home. After calling to confirm the appointment the day of, Sam arrived on time and asked a few more questions about the history of the piano - where we got it, the last time it had been tuned, who would be playing it, etc. He advised that for a piano in the condition ours was in, it may take more than one tuning to get it to a good point, which was understandable given it had not been tuned since being moved several years ago. He then went to work, immediately identifying that the problem with the pedal was an easy fix - it had apparently gotten knocked out of alignment when it was moved, and he simply popped it back into place and tightened a screw. Then he began the process of tuning the piano, which took about an hour. After he finished, he said that he didn't think we needed to do a second tuning until 6 months down the road, and said he would put a note to call me on his calendar, with no pressure to return his call if we didn't want to have the tuning done then. He charged me $120 for the tuning and nothing for the pedal repair, since it had been such an easy fix. It was a terrific service experience and the piano sounds great. Happiness all around.

Sam was professional and returned my initial phone call quickly. He scheduled a time that would work best for me and then called when he was on his way to confirm that the appointment time was still good for me. He cleaned up the work area when he was finished. The whole appointment lasted an hour. The piano sounds wonderful!
Description of Work: My piano had not been tuned in many years. Sam came and tuned my piano within an hour and fixed one "stuck" piano key.

It took 2 visits but Sam was able to tune our piano which had been moved and remained untuned for many years. He was very personable and even offered to explain the whole process of tuning a piano and show us exactly what he was doing. I really appreciated that and took him up on the offer - I learned a lot about my piano and how it works - very interesting to watch him work. He was able to get the job done in time for a party we were having so that was a big help also. I would definitely call him next time the piano needs tuning.
Description of Work: Sam tuned our very old piano which hadn't been tuned in years and it now sounds beautiful.

Sam did very good work on my grand piano. We usually get the tuning done every six months. I have used his services three times now and he has been reliable. I also find his fee reasonable.
Description of Work: Sam tuned my grand piano in an hour. He used his own tools and removed the piano top to gain access to the strings and replaced it when the work was complete.

Sam came to my house as scheduled, called before leaving his house, was prompt. He is obviously very knowledgeable about pianos, as we discussed how my Steinway had been rebuilt. He spent about an hour tuning it, and we planned for him to return soon, as a newly rebuilt piano must be tuned several times initially. He is pleasant, quick, and a good technician. The piano sounds great!

Sam has been our tuner/technician since 1995. He has worked on our three pianos, the latest being a Kawai KG-6C 7' 4'' semi-concert grand. Our 1917 Aeolian player piano will periodically require attention. Sam knows how to take her apart, fix whatever the problem might be, and gingerly put her back together again. He has kept that ninety-year-old piano in incredible shape. She is loud, strong, and full of life. Sam is honest, up-front, and his services are very reasonably priced. We are very lucky to have him!

Sam was very professional, timely, and knowledgeable. He confirmed his appointment before arriving. He tuned the piano and offered advice for a subsequent tuning schedule. He even checked the mechanism to ensure there were no major problems.

Competent, conscientious, and reasonably priced for the job.
Description of Work: I have an old upright piano that had not been tuned in more than two years, and was missing several ivories. Sam came promptly on both visits and did an excellent job, doing the initial tuning one week, and the final tuning one week later, when he also fixed the hinge on the piano bench and applied the new ivories.
