This was a small floor repair job to allow for a larger fireplace hearth. The salesman and worker were both very nice and easy to deal with. And the carpentry was excellent. But when the work was done, the new oak ?frame? around the hearth - and some of my old oak floorboards - were much shinier than the existing floor. (I wish I could attach a photo - the difference is not subtle).
When another Kashian employee came out to address it, he said the first guy had probably used a glossy finish instead of matte by mistake. He replaced it with the matte finish. But when he was done, to my eye it looked just as shiny as the first finish. I spoke with him on the phone and he said there was nothing else that could be done. When I asked him why there was any finish at all on some of the old floorboards, he admitted that, yes, that was a mistake. Normally there would be no need to sand the old boards, just the new. (And in my opinion, the difference in finish would have been much less noticeable if it was only on the new wood ?frame?, which would have a natural ending).
But here is the kicker: I called the owner, Doug Stein, who has not seen the work. When I told him that the difference in finish was so obvious that he would not accept it in his own house, he said he would not have done ?the $200 fix? in his own house (actually it was $420); he would have had the entire floor refinished. What!?! That?s his defense? His salesman sold me a job that would not have been acceptable in the boss?s house and it's my fault?!
Not only that, but Mr. Stein?s own employee told me that the first guy made two mistakes (using the glossy finish and sanding some of the old floorboards)! Still he would not take responsibility for the problem.
Mr. Stein insisted that the difference in finish was specified in the original estimate. It wasn?t -- I can show you. He told me the salesman made it clear that there would be a difference in the finish. I don?t remember this at all. And if the salesman did say something, he certainly did not emphasize it, let alone suggest that I might want to consider refinishing the whole floor as the only way to get a result that would be satisfactory to his boss.
Oh and by the way? just a few years ago, we had another small floor repair done when we widened a doorway. In that case, only the new boards were sanded. Only the new boards got the finish and if there was any difference between the old finish and the new, I never noticed it. I told this to Mr. Stein. It made no difference to his handling of the situation or to his tone.
He did refund the $200 I had already paid. But now I have a beautiful new fireplace with this strange mismatched finish on the floorboards in front of it.
(And, by the way, my ratings above apply to the company and it's owner, not the employees. Despite the mistakes made by the one employee, everyone I dealt with seemed professional, competent and willing to try to make this right. Mistakes happen. It seems to be the owner who said nothing else could be done.)
"[member name removed] has an older floor. When he asked us to do the small repair, we did instruct him that the proper way to do the job was to buff the entire floor so that it would blend in with the older floor. He did not want to spend he money to do the whole floor so we did the best we could to blend in the area with the existng floor. When the repair was completed, [member name removed] compained that you could see a difference in the sheen. We then sent the crew back to work on the repair again. We used a matt finish. The matt finish has the lowest sheen available. [member name removed] said it was still too shiny. Because the customer was unhappy, we fully refunded all of his money. We did not charge him anything for the repair. I am surprised this resulted in a complaint. We tried our best to meet his needs and when we didn't meet his expectations, we fully refunded his money."
