They only thing was that they didn't do the plumbing under the sink correctly. We didn't know it until we had a plumber come and replace it. He said that there were five code violations. So, the plumbing aspect of their company I wasn't as impressed with. The woodworking, counter-tops, appliances, and everything else was great; excellent. Everything turned out beautifully, I couldn't be happier. The overall product, when people come in they go, "Wow"! It's a "wow" kitchen. I got a lot for the money, however the one thing was the plumbing under the sink, and the electrical wasn't top notch either. We had to have an electrician come in to fix a couple of things. Those two aspects were not as high quality as the other things. He had his own workers doing that, rather than subcontracting a plumber and electrician, and they didn't know the code as well as they should've. If I used them again, I would insist on them hiring an electrician or plumber to do those jobs, or I would hire them to do the job.
They were always polite, and never had an issue with that. I thought they were very professional. When Dennis said he would be here, he was here every time.
"[Member Name Removed]. The manufacturer who produced this product was suppose to come and look at this for you. I will contact them again and see what I can get done. Sorry for the delay. I will be in touch. Dennis"
Steve also did an excellent job in installing our backsplash. We had a pattern for the backsplash and it was done very nicely. The first day it took about 6 hours and the next day about 3 hours to complete the job. He was also very professional and left minimal mess behind. We are very happy with the results and would definitely call K D Kitchens if we have more jobs to be done.
We had never done a kitchen remodel before, so in hindsight there would have been some things that I would have done differently to make things easier for them and us. I want to start out with saying that they bent over backwards to get us what we wanted, and delivered on it.
Since this is a company that comes to your house with books and samples of whatever you are wanting, it can be overwhelming to be faced with so many choices at once, although it does help to be right in your kitchen with the information at hand. I wish I had done more homework before they arrived, visiting home improvement stores to actually look at kitchen models, etc. There are a lot of convenient internal features in cabinets that I didn't know about, and it would have saved us all time if I had looked at some of these features ahead of time. I visited the home improvement stores after their initial visit, and wasted KD's time by adding them later and forcing them to rework plans (which they happily did). It would have been prudent of us to look at cabinet styles and hardware, just to get an idea of what style we liked and save time. The same goes for flooring, backsplash, and lighting. Go to actual flooring and lighting stores to see what's available.
That being said, we changed our design idea completely from what we thought we wanted at the beginning. I have more than the usual amount of kitchen equipment, and although our former kitchen had average storage, I needed more. The kitchen designer, Mike, actually asked to see my overflow storage area in the basement to get an idea of how much stuff I have. He then came up with a lot of creative ideas for extra storage in the kitchen. My favorite is a large shallow drawer in the kickplate of the cabinet next to the stove, where I can put large pans. He also was very thoughtful to ergonomics. He and Dennis (the owner) listened very well to what we wanted, and offered very helpful insights all through the process. Before the cabinets were ordered (beautiful! Made by the Amish in Arthur), every detail about them was attended to, including what side the door hinges should be on.
Part of the process was going to different suppliers in the Chicago suburbs to pick out the marble countertop with Mike. It enabled us to do a lot of comparing and make the perfect choice -- we would really recommend this step.
Although Dennis has contractors for lighting, vents, and gas lines in the area, we weren't satisfied with the one we spoke with - he didn't listen that well - we had our own electrician and ventilation people install the undercounter lighting and hood venting. For lighting we went to Northern Lights in Belvidere,IL (lots of helpful information there). We would recommend the dimmable LED "ribbon" undercounter lighting -- we very rarely have the overhead lights on in the kitchen anymore.
The tear out of the kitchen went very smoothly and quickly. The cabinets and appliances were recycled by friends, and everything else was disposed of by KD. We ended up buying the flooring from a local company, but I think we actually could have gotten what we needed from KD. There ended up being way too much tile, and there was some difficulty returning the unused portion, but it was resolved. It would have definitely been easier if we had gotten it from KD's sources. The floor is beautiful and well-laid. Steve, who did the majority of the labor in the project, paid thoughtful attention to detail. He and Mike worked well together, and between the two of them came up with creative solutions to problems. It was the first time they had dealt with this cabinet maker, and a few things went wrong. But Steve made them even better than if they had gotten it right, creating storage for the brooms that naturally held them upright, and putting in absolutely perfect vertical storage dividers in a cabinet. The supplier also put in the wrong kind of drawer hardware, which required them (the supplier) to remake the drawer boxes, which resulted in the delay I mentioned earlier.
Mike works countertop magic, taking photos of the selected marble slabs, and showing them with the kitchen layout, allows you to choose where the pieces should go. We have one seam in the whole kitchen (and there are a lot of counters), and it is barely noticeable.
Dennis installed a reverse osmosis water filter under the sink, which works beautifully. They supplied a very stylish and extremely functional range hood, as well. The rest of the appliances we got at a local store, although Dennis offered to supply them at his cost. We thought it would be better to keep it local if we needed service.
We now have a functional kitchen that allows us to store items where they make sense, instead of just where they will fit. It is a whole new world.
The counter and the setup people arrived on time on the date selected. Steve was the central setup person and was excellent. He took everything out with the salesperson - Dennis - as his assistant. The single unit fit perfectly! There was no need for any trim as the old counter had (that trim had covered the spacing between the wall and the old counter). Steve was also an excellent plumber as he insisted that the plumbing to the new sink be perfect.
- My wife and I are very pleased with the new counter and the professional job done putting it in! We will call Dennis immediately if we ever need to do more.
