Luckily, when we got to our new house, two more movers arrived to help unpack. If they hadn't come, the move would have gone on until after dark. When the movers left, I noticed that they left their dolly in our garage. When I went back to our old house to clean up, I noticed that they also left their plastic wrap and a long strap. I called and left a voice mail message at their office number but the dolly was not picked up until I called them again and spoke with their admin assistant. (The dolly sat in front of my house for four and a half days.)
When I went to put up my book shelves, I noticed that several screws were missing so I had to go out and find replacement screws.
Basically, they were really nice guys but needed to be more professional --- to make sure that they took their tools, dolly, and other items and to not lose any book shelf screws. They also needed a lot better support from management. It is very difficult for only two men to do the work of three or four men.
After arrival at 7:45am, they moved out all the items and were finished by 4:45pm. We had a LOT of things, it took up 2/3 of the moving van so they were very quick considering.
Then when they arrived in Texas, they came precisely on time but it was the weather that delayed the next step. it had hailed and stormed the night before, then again at 5am. So the very steep driveway we were on was extremely slippery. They had to wait about an hour before the driveway dried up enough to safely move the boxes, etc. I mean this was an INCREDIBLY STEEP driveway which also then took a 90 degree turn into the garage so this was very difficult. No complaints from any of the guys. In fact, our two Jack Russell terriers liked them and were perfectly at ease with them. We were impressed by how efficient and hard working these guys were. I would enthusiastically recommend Deerfield's Moving to anyone. I just wish we could use them again for our final move in Texas but they're based out of Illinois.
We cannot say enough good things about this company. I don't know where they get such great workers.
The loading day went relatively uneventfully (there seemed to be a lot of time during the loading where nothing was really being done, but we were being charged by weight, not hourly, so that is really an internal question between Atlas and Deerfield). On the day we were supposed to have the load delivered, the mover and his assistant were absolutely punctual. (And, Don managed to get us a date within the window we were hoping for). Despite the fact that there was a problem--the large moving van couldn't get to the loading dock through the alley because of how the cars on the street were parked--both movers stayed calm and resourceful, and we just moved everything in through the front of the building. The move-in was, unlike the loading up, quite efficient, and both men were careful with our things and friendly and helpful throughout. The paperwork was clearly explained--and a nice surprise. Our load weighed less than the estimate, so we wound up getting a refund of about $150 dollars. Almost nothing was damaged--the sum total of damage was to one knob on a dresser, which the mover glued back on and offered to have us write up as a problem (we declined--it was really a minor problem). Again, everything was organized, setbacks like the problem with the alley were dealt with effectively and cheerfully, and care was taken with our possessions. And the pricing was more than competitive--it was significantly lower than our other quotes. It is possible that we were given a very competitive price because we may be doing a much more substantial move in the near future. It is possible that we were given such excellent care and service for the same reason. However, even if that is true, I really appreciate that someone crosses every "t" and dots every "i" to ensure that they get repeat business. And, if we do have a bigger move soon, Deerfield has earned my repeat business--they were efficient, they lived up to their promises, they were careful, they communicated well, and they were professional and friendly (everyone we had contact with) throughout. I don't think you can ask for more. In particular, Mr. Hoffman's time and care--in short, his old-school professionalism, was greatly appreciated. His painstaking attention to detail gave me great confidence and went a long way to reducing the anxiety that attends to almost any move.
