GUARANTEE GENERAL STORE

If you enjoy hassle and like to stay awake nights wondering when/if your job will be completed, this is the store for you. I shopped here because I wanted QuickStep laminate flooring; it is more realistic-looking than some others and there are a limited number of dealers. Guarantee is located five minutes from our house--I thought I would shop locally and avoid the big box stores. We were able to check out a number of samples for a week and determine the best color/style. The good experience ended after we picked out the floor and paid for 2/3 of it.
This job entailed installing flooring over nearly the entire lower level of our home. This required us to relocate nearly all furniture and my home office to other areas of the house. The job was supposed to take two days; instead it took three weeks and four days until we were able to return furniture to the proper location. Final install took another two weeks after that! The problem was the mouldings--on two occasions the foreman tried to get me to approve installation of white woodwork (I'd paid for stained oak), then they brought horribly orange-stained pine, which I refused. A week later they brought horribly stained oak, which I again refused. I made a personal visit to the store requesting the issue of proper woodwork be expedited. I got excuses about the wood itself being different colors and a promise that the foreman would pick out a new bundle of oak. I made two more visits to the store--one to "approve" the stain they were using on yet another batch of oak. In the end I just asked them to stain the wood "natural" and I hoped to doctor it myself later. A few missed appointments later, the installers finally arrived and installed the "best" base and shoe they could muster. The base sort of matches the floor but shoe is a blonde color. Oh well.
The focal points of the room are a built-in entertainment center and a fireplace. Thank heaven the installers ran out of shoe moulding and there was another two-week wait. In this time I visited my local Menard's store where I found pre-stained oak that was a near-perfect match for the floor. I purchased this oak and me and my 76-year-old father spent a morning installing the moulding around the entertainment center and fireplace. At least that part looks good. They did take $275 off the final total for this work, but I felt this amount was a pittance considering the amount of hassle.
I am extremely dissatisfied with this company. On five occasions we had appointments scheduled in the morning and either no one showed up or I got a call after the fact saying they couldn't make it. One one occasion my husband took a vacation day to be here and no one showed. All they had to do was match the wood trim to the floor, but the staining and installation of real wood is out of the skillset of this company. There is no communication between the installers and the owner. AVOID!

I can tell you that they are not cheap but they are a small, local company. They are not a big store. We had a massive flood in the house and so I had to buy all new carpeting on my first floor so consequently we bought carpet for my family room, dinning room and living room. We extended it up the stairs through the hallway up there. We intend to call them back again; I did not get my bedrooms done at that time.

We worked with Bill from Guarantee General Carpet. He came over after the store closed to measure, and was friendly and honest. He gave us an estimate and scheduled the installation. Today, the carpet was installed. It took an hour less than they estimated, the two workers did a great job and the carpet looks awesome. Sadly, we have to cut the doors down because the carpet is too thick. But that's our issue, not the installers. Overall, we're thrilled! I would definitely hire them again.

CHOSE CARPET FOR SEVERAL ROOMS, INCLUDING A VERY NICE 'UPGRADED' CARPET. SEVERAL WEEKS IN ADVANCE THEY KNEW ABOUT WHEN I WOULD NEED THE CARPET INSTALLED (BEFORE MOVING IN!). HOWEVER, I WAS STILL MAKING SELECTIONS WHEN THE WEEK BEFORE MY MOVE WAS GETTING BOOKED UP ON THEIR SCHEDULE. JOHN AT GGS CALLED ME AND LEFT A MESSAGE TO TELL ME THAT THE PRIOR WEEK WAS ALMOST BOOKED, SO THAT WAS MY WARNING TO GET OVER THERE AND MAKE MY FINAL DECISIONS, MAKE A DEPOSIT, AND SECURE MY INSTALL DATE. THE INSTALLERS WERE ON TIME. THE CARPET LOOKS GREAT.
