"I believe you have us confused with Berner Plumbing H20. Please check your records. We are a different company from Rolling Meadows. Thank you."
Once he arrived and I saw what little the cleaning process entailed, I became disappointed that he did not offer that suggestion in advance on the phone. The "cleaning" process consisted of: 1) Wiping a little dust off the top with damp paper towels. 2) There was a dust underneath which he cleaned out from under with a brush. 3) Then he removed the 8*" by 1.5" plastic vent cover and gave it to my sister to wash. He ignited the pilot light.
He then began the checkout process where he charged $85 for the service call and $43.50 for the "cleaning". When I saw what little he did and thought about these charges, I suggested to him: would it not have been the more ethical and more efficient approach to suggest to me on the initial phone call earlier that day how we could have ->easily<- cleaned and re-ignited it ourselves while we waited for him? We would have had hot water that much sooner and prevented a service call. I concluded the visit paying him but also letting him know I was very disappointed that it did not occur to him to take a couple minutes to suggest and explain this up front rather than make us wait for his service for something we easily could have done ourselves. Like most people, we are always in need
of a plumber and are happy to pay for a job well done but in this case this plumber prioritized the opportunity to make a little money and in doing so missed a perfect opportunity to gain our trust and an ongoing business relationship - a penny wise and dollar foolish move on his part.
"We will try to be brief in this response because frankly a customer that complains about a fair price of $128.50 for 1.5 hrs work (service call fee, total travel, labor and subsequent paperwork), questions our ethics, (fixed her problem after a handy-man couldn't the day before) and doesn't understand the value of having a licensed, trained plumbing professional look at her water heater problem isn't the kind of customer we are looking for on Angie's List. We originally quoted $85.00 (service-diagnostic only) the morning customer called, we ended up getting out there the same day... The customer 's main complaint was we didn't tell her "how to clean" the water heater before we came out so she "wouldn't have to pay" for a service call. The new more efficient water heaters now have a closed burner chamber, they also have many more safety devices on them than before, so when a pilot light goes out now, its not a black/white issue. There is a warning box at the top of every water heater manual that says: "If the information in these instructions is not followed exactly, a fire or explosion may result causing property damage, personal injury or death." So for me to talk to someone on the phone on how to perform maintenance on a water heater would be potentially liable and would be violation of my plumbing code of ethics (health, safety, welfare and property of the public.) This customer went out of their way to find a "professional" to fix the problem by contacting the manufacturer of the water heater who than referred us to them. It's sad this customer didn't think the professional service performed and the price paid wasn't worth having hot water on the same day they called. In the famous words of Warren Buffett: Price Is What You Pay, Value Is What You Get."
It took a few calls to get Rich set-up for a visit, as he seems to work in the suburbs a bit more than the city (we are on the northwest side of Chicago). But once he was here, he was pleasant and professional, explained what he was doing completely, finished the work in the time he estimated, and had a fair price. He also cheerfully answered a few other questions I had about the plumbing.
We would definitely recommend him.
I would like another reputable plumbing company to determine if the sump pump that Berner Plumbing installed is installed correctly and to check our existing outside piping and, if necessary, install better piping. Berner left the installation that Saturday night, stating that I should not run the pump until the piping was cleared because it will burn out and he could not warranty another!!
"This posting is for the customer in regards to her sump pump service call. The hole she is talking about is called a "weep hole." It's to prevent air lock when the pump can overpump the pit, leaving air in the impeller chamber before leading to the next cycle. The reason she did not see it before is because there was debri blocking the opening, so we opened it slightly so pump will operate successfully on each cycle. Although the customer believes 1/2 of the water is discharging into pit is quite a far stretch...its actually a small stream angled away from pump. She is incorrect in regards to Berner disconnecting outside pipe. We only installed the pump on inside of the house and did nothing to the outside pipe. Also, the outside pipe/line is a combination PVC and flimsy black plastic pipe (varying approx 1.25-1.5" in Dia.) laying on the ground and running approx 35-40 feet alongside the house. We recommended that a new 4-6" PVC pipe be installed underground to prevent further blockages and potential freezing. Before we arrived for the warranty repair the customer stated on the phone that pump was not discharging water out of pit and water was very warm to touch. Once on site, we found the pump had completely failed upon inspection. Under the circumstances we did not have to warranty this repair because it was actually the customers external piping that was blocked which most likely caused the pump to fail. (Zoeller M-53 pumps very seldom fail in the first year!) Also, in the previous 48hours before we came out for the warranty repair there was 4-5" of snow that fell and temps had dropped. We advised her that her line must still be plugged/frozen after we installed the replacement pump..as the water was still not discharging out of the pit. Once advising the customer what was happening with the new pump, she stated that her husband would check it and clear later. What probably happened after we left job site...customer ran pump before correcting the stopped up discharge line and the outside pipe blew apart due to the back pressure. Berner Plumbing stands behind their work and even errs on the side of customer when we are able too. In this case we were able to warranty a pump, charge her a minimal labor fee and correctly diagnose the additional work needed to fix the problem so it does not occur again. We will attempt to reach out to the customer in the next weeks to discuss the previous work or go over additional problems. In the mean time please feel free to call us with any further questions."
