I contracted with Dimoda Woodworking in Elgin, IL to build a finshtank stand according to the size and shape of the fishtank. I sent Vince Dimoda pictures from the website of a stand for this custom tank. He had the pictures available. After agreeing on a price, which was high, but since it involved curves, i agreed to the price. I wasn't specific with what I wanted and he didn't include the canopy which was on the pictures. I told him I needed the canopy done too. He told me that he could do it. He didn't give me a price upon discovery that the canopy was missing, but assumed I would get a q quote before he started. He had done two other projects and gave me a quote for all. Next thing I see is that the canopy is at the finishers. I was startled that it was done and we hadn't even talked price. I emailed him about the cost and was shocked when the price for the canopy was more than 1/2 of the base while it was 1/5 of the size. I told him this was too much. We agreed on a price after some negotiations. Upon installation, the fishtank base did not hide the bottom of the fishtank glass. The pictures obviously showed that the tank bottom was hidden. His excuse was that I wasn't specific. I disagreed. I sent pictures and also showed him another tank done the previous year by another woodworking company which covered the bottom of the tank. This tank stand was available to him as it was at my house and I had told him I wanted something like this stand prior to building Also, the bottom of the tank had small wedges of wood under the stand to balance the stand. I asked if he planned to put some cosmetic cover like a shoe base. He said that wasn't included. I asked him where his quality was and if he really wanted to show this tank as his workmanship with its flaws. He didn't seem to care. I finally just told him to do what was need and he gave me a price this time. I paid 1/2 of that difference. About 1 week later, he emails me and says he is ready to install but wants cash. I have always paid by check since he wouldn't take a credit card and he has never had a problem. I told him I didn't understand what the issue was, but I would give him a certified check. I don't know what his plans were for cash but evading the tax system isn't something I want to be part of. He refused to take the certified check. I told him that he changed the agreement of the contract and I didn't accept. He refused to accept my counter offer and thus the contract was now void. I wouldn't use this guy for anything. He didn't take pride in his work at all. I had another craftsman come to make the canopy and his price was significantly less and was shocked that Dimoda wouldn't even put a shoe around the bottom of the tank base to hid the wedges. He said it was only common sense to do that. After agreeing upon a price, he came back for measurements and mentioned that he would fix the mistakes Dimoda without a charge. This, is now, someone who takes pride in his work. DON'T USE DIMODA. CONTACT ME IF YOU EVER HAVE QUESTIONS ABOUT HIM.
