DARREN OF ALL TRADES

He assured us that he could replace the roof after tearing down the old deck as he'd done "thousands of roofs." He claimed that he'd worked for Champion Roofing as a consultant. (We later contacted a Champion rep, who said he'd never heard of Darren.)
As it turned out, despite his marketing materials stating that he was licensed, bonded and insured, he is none of the above, certainly not for roofing and probably not for anything.  He turned the minor leaks into major ones -- 4 inches in buckets during rain of any duration.  When he couldn't find the leaks, he tore four gaping holes in our drywall looking for them from the inside.  He also tore off the woodwork from the deck door. He said he'd fix all this after repairing the leak.
We finally hired Tans' in Februray to replace Darren's roof and met with Darren to discuss restitution. (Of course we didn't allow him to do further work, as in repairing the drywall). He assured us his insurance would take care of it.  It didn't.  He then said he would refund our money by June, after he did a big job in May.  He didn't.  After unreturned emails and calls, we found that he'd sold his house. We were told that he'd just moved to Israel. We are pursuing a fraud action against him.

Darren was very knowledgeable. His crew was very polite and they finished the job in a reasonable amount of time.

Darren was very creative. The deck design is not something you see everyday and looks great. His response to my request for a bid was very prompt and he visited the project with about 24 hours. It did take a bit of time to get the quote and finalize contract. The contract supplied is not sufficient enough in my opinion. It would behoove the potential client to write it up themselves with all the details specified. I mean ALL details, how it's attached to the building, what will the design elements look like, what material will be used, how will it be fastened down, etc. He has very strong opinions which you will most likely agree with, but if you don't you will have to make sure it is specified in the contract. Our particular project was tough as every bit of material had to be hauled up the side of the building using ropes. The design of the decking was unique and the time to implement the design was underestimated. That being said, the results were beautiful. The entire project took much longer than expected, but the results were amazing. I would recommend Darren, but I would keep an eye on your timeline.
