They did a FANTASTIC job. The piece repair ranged in price from $20 to $400 -- depending on the level of damage, the intricacy of the silver work and the size. The pieces are restored to the quality of new pieces. They gave excellent advice about the care of the pieces. When I pressed for additional solutions, they offered to hand make storage bags (to prevent oxidation) and charged only a nominal fee. Seeing the beauty of some of the pieces transported me back to when they belonged to my grandmother. I am now planning to have additional pieces done because the work was so well done -- and I didn't realize how amazing it would be to have them back in high quality.
Description of Work: I took a multitude of family heirlooms that had fallen into disrepair ... from silver pitchers, to intricate tea trays, to serving pieces and even tea spoons ... to Baroque and asked them to restore them to their original beauty.

I brought it to them, they told me exactly what needed to be done, including touching up the paint. They gave me an estimate for how much it would cost and how long it would take. They finished it when they said they would and you can not even tell it was ever broken. The glass mirror is very old and they treated it with such care and were just wonderful to work with. Great service, great work ,very kind, lovely people.
Description of Work: I had a very old iron european mirror which the movers did not pack correctly and parts of the orate leaves on the frame broke off or were bent.

I installed and enjoyed an expensive lock set (Baldwin) and matching door knocker for my front door for many years. Shiny brass is no longer in fashion and wished to keep the existing door hardware but have it in a nickel finish . Baroque took the old hardware and knocker, stripped them and plated them with nickel and clear coated them for outdoor use. The parts looked fantastic and went back on the doors perfectly - of course since they came off these doors. The cost was only a little less than buying new (not including shipping) - but I have the style I want. Nice people to do business with.

Description of Work: Baroque completely rewired and cleaned an antique chandelier. I called them based on the info on Angie's list to discuss the project. They reviewed the service and the possible issues. They picked up the chandelier (they do not remove or rehang). Upon review the owner called and told me exactly what needed to be done and the estimated cost. When the chandelier was returned it was in stunning shape. And it was packaged so perfectly that there was no danger of crystals being damaged in transit. They also added crystals which were missing. Their service is highly professional with a great touch of "old world care". I recommend their firm heartily.

I own two beautiful sterling silver two-piece candelabra (estimated to have been manufactured in Paris sometime between the two world wars) that Jack Dirilen has worked on. Years ago, I took them to another silversmith at Marshall Field's to be repaired, as they were broken when I was given them by a friend. In the course of repairing them, the silversmith removed the bottom plates and apparently could not replace them, so he refilled the candelabra with resin and attached felt circles to the bottoms. Years later, I brought them to Mr, Dirilen to be polished. He did a lovely job, but was horrified that another silversmith had removed the bottom plates. At that time, Jack's wife, Ani, sewed zippered brown flannel anti-tarnish bags for each piece, as well as bags for two large silver wine coolers that I also brought to Jack to be polished. Fast forward to this fall. Owing to some flooding my basement, one candelabrum was badly damaged (the resin filling got wet and crumbled to bits), and the other was also broken. Jack expertly repaired both pieces and manufactured new silver-plated brass bottom plates for both. He then polished them so brightly that you almost need eye protection to look at them! They look gorgeous and were the proud centerpiece of my holiday dinner table. Jack also threaded the two parts of each candelabrum so they screw together perfectly and don't wobble. You can't do better than to bring your precious silver pieces to Jack Dirilen for repair or polishing. He does a wonderful job -- so much so, in fact, that I paid him more than he asked for. And Ani is charming and very helpful. The shop's location is easy to find and the business hours are reasonable. Kudos to Baroque Expert Silversmith!
Description of Work: Rebuilt a collapsed silver candelabrum and fixed a second broken one, polished both, and created threading on the separate pieces so they screw together correctly.

They did an outstanding job. The set looks like new. I had been pretty careful about keeping it polished the best I could, but I have never seen it look so shiny and beautiful. The owners were delightful to work with, and I wouldn't hesitate to use them again.
Description of Work: They polished and lacquered my grandparents' sterling silver tea/coffee set and re-silvered the silverplate tray that goes with it. The set is about 80-90 years old.

Description of Work: On the first trip there I took 15 pieces of silver in all sizes and shapes. She could not give me a quote as her husband does the work and he was not there. I came back a week later with approx. 20 more pieces. She went through the first 15 pieces quoting me a minimum of $100 per piece stating that they were all in need of re-dipping. I was aghast especially since I had just purchased some of the pieces a few weeks before at a resale shop for between $20-30.00 each. I kept saying, "But I just want them to be polished and shiny." She kept saying that they needed to be re-dipped. The total for the first 15 pieces was $2750.00. I kept a straight face and she started going through the next 20 pieces to give me a quote on them and then her husband came out of the back and he looked at each piece and told me that they had lost their silver and needed to be re-dipped. Their quote for all of my pieces was $8,450.00. I kept saying, "You mean you can't just polish them and make them look shiny?" I knew they were BSing me for sure when they got to a Tiffany wine carrier that I had purchased 2 years earlier and had never touched since. I said, "this cannot be! I just purchased it from Tiffany 2 years ago and it's been sitting in a drawer. I grabbed a silver cloth from their counter and started rubbing it and of course the tarnish came right off. They said, "oh, yes this one is ok." I put all of my pieces back into the boxes and left. They are the biggest scam artists around and I am furious that I had to PAY you to get their name, and drive far away on top of it all. I want a refund!

Baroque saved our project! We were in the middle of an updating project in our master bath, changing all the brass fixtures and trim to brushed nickel, when we discovered we could not replace the roman tub fixture. We could not access our service panel to remove the fixture from below the deck and the new fixture we purchased was not compatible with the existing hardware above the deck. Our contractor told us, short of painting the fixture, we were stuck with brass unless we wanted to rip out a wall to open the tub. Then I found Baroque. I sent Ani a photo of the fixture and she provided me with an estimate and told me to bring it it for a better look. We were able to get the handles and spout off, so I brought the pieces in, picked out a finish, and a week later I have a beautiful brushed nickel faucet to complete our updating project. The cost was very close to the estimate and was comparable to what a new faucet would have cost, so we were very happy with the outcome. Jack did an amazing job with the replating and Ani was a joy to work with. I will definitely use Baroque again and would highly recommend them.
Description of Work: Baroque replated our roman tub faucet and handles from an outdated brass finish to a more contemporary brushed nickel finish.

I saw the reviews about Baroque Silversmith on Angie's list and called for directions. I brought in one of our church's brass collection plates to see what could be done. The plates were quite old and needed to be polished and lacquered. I was given the cost for each one and was also told that if I brought them in on Monday, I would be able to pick them up on Friday so that we would not be without them for our Sunday service. I returned with all eight of them. When I returned home (an hour's drive), there was a message from Baroque to call them. They determined that a large cork circle on the bottom of each plate would help to prevent scratches when they are stacked on top of each other. Since this would be an additional cost of $75, they needed my authorization to order the cork which I certainly gave them. When I picked up the plates on Friday, I was overwhelmed! The plates looked like they were brand new. On Sunday, I brought them to church and everyone commented how beautiful they looked. Our minister even held one up for everyone to see. This entire experience was an extremely positive one. Our church is celebrating its 175th anniversary this year, and being able to restore these memorial plates is particularly meaningful. Jack and Ani are professional in every way and their expertise in this field is tops.
Description of Work: Laquered and polished eight collection plates for our church. In addition, round circles of cork were glued on the bottom of each plate so that they would not touch each other and scratch them.

We had it plated in oil rubbed bronze. My god you could eat off of those registers they looked so nice. Very nice. Everything was done to perfection.
Description of Work: Replated over steel 16 door doorknobs, doorknob plates, pocket lock latchs and face, plus screws, 2 stormdoor hardware that had lost its finish due to too much windex. I also had 8 heat registers striped of all the paint and plated.

His work is beautiful and his standards high, If ever I was unhappy - or HE was not satisfied with a finish - he would redo promptly. This line of work is an art. If you want quality and personal attention, this is the place.
Description of Work: Both my mother - an antique collector- and I have used Baroque to replate and polish our metals for years. Last year Jack replated all the chrome pieces on my 20-year old, irreplaceable jaccuzzi-bathtub - and made them the EXACT brushed copper of my newly-renovated bathroom fixtures. He can copy ANY metal - and his work is durable and perfect. He has plated multiple fixtures for us -including cabinet pulls, towel rod ends, chandelier canopies, antique lamp parts, and worn silver-plate. He also exquisitely polishes and lacquers pieces when only that is needed.

Fabulous! This is a great craftsman whom I never would have known if it hadn't been for Angie's List. The pieces are beyond gorgeous. They are great people to work with.
Description of Work: I brought in two fireplace surrounds which were over 100 years old. They had been painted multiple times. I tried to strip them because they were metal, but could not get the paint off. I took them and two door plates to Baroque. It turned out they were cast iron (which is incredibly brittle when it gets that old). They stripped them, re-plated and polished them.

I called ahead to ask if I could bring the items in. Although he wasn't going to be there, his wife was. So after I dropped them off, I received a phone call within a day with the price. The work was completed less than 2 weeks later (including a holiday weekend in between). The items look beautiful, like new except even better because they have the solid heft of older pieces.

PRIOR TO MY MOVE TO THE CHICAGO AREA I WAS REFERRED TO ''THE'' NORTHSHORE SILVERSMITH. I WAS DISAPPOINTED IN BOTH THEIR EMPLOYEE KNOWLEDGE AND THEIR OUTRAGEOUSLY INSULTING PRICE. THANK GOODNESS I FOUND BAROQUE. RUN TO JACK'S SHOP, DON'T WALK. HE'S A SIXTH GENERATION TURKISH TRAINED SILVERSMITH. HE WORKED FOR THAT NORTHSHORE SHOP FOR YEARS AND FINALLY STARTED HIS OWN BUSINESS ABOUT TEN YEARS AGO. NOT ONLY IS HIS CRAFTMANSHIP EXQUISITE, BUT HE'S A GENUINELY GOOD PERSON. AS A BONUS, HE'S GOT THE BEST PRICES IN TOWN. HE WORKS WITH GOLD, STERLING, COPPER, BRASS, PEWTER, TIN AND SILVERPLATE AND DOES ALL TYPES OF REPAIRS, POLISH AND PLATING. ALSO, LAMPS AND CHANDELIERS ARE WIRED AND REFINISHED; STERLING SILVERWARE AND CUSTOM JEWELRY REPAIRED; BRASS BED REPAIRS; FIREPLACE, DOOR AND PLUMBING HARDWARE POLISHING AND PLATING. A FAMILY RUN SHOP, YOU'LL PROBABLY BE GREETED BY EITHER HIM OR HIS WIFE. I GUARANTEE THAT HE IS THE ONLY TRUE ARTISAN SILVERSMITH IN THE CHICAGO AREA.
Description of Work: SHINED, LACQUERED AND SERVICED FIVE DOOR HANDLE SETS BLACK WITH FIFTY YEARS OF TARNISH AND PAINT. THEY WERE SO BAD I WAS UNSURE THAT THEY COULD BE SALVAGED. HE SHINED AND LACQUERED THEM BY HAND-THE WAY THEY DO FINE ANTIQUE METALS IN ENGLAND AND THE SOUTH-NOT THE LESS DESIRABLE SOAK METHOD COMMON IN THE CHICAGO AREA.
