Outcome: Due to the fact that this matter has not been solved and we are at a stalemate, we sought independent legal advice. Our Attorneys served the House of Granite with papers. Additionally, we escalated this matter to the Better Business Bureau, the Attorney General and Department of Consumer Services. House Granite refused to respond to the BBB and are in the process of losing their BBB accreditation.
After getting quotes from countertop providers, we chose Tao Silestone quartz displayed as a sample in the House of Granite (HOG) showroom. At the time, no serious issues were expressed by our consultant (Paul) about the color, though we did a considerable amount of research and were aware that the surface needed to be cleaned quite often. On 12.15.12, we purchased quartz countertops and signed a contract w/ HOG for installation and materials. Upon signing the contract, HOG asked for a 50% deposit which was paid in full.
On 1.07.13 the countertops were delivered and installed. At that time we wrote a check to cover the remaining balance. Prior to
installation, the quartz looked flawless. The installers applied a gel-like sealer (smelled liked chemicals, similar to paint thinner) on the counters. Immediately afterwards, the counters became streaky and cloudy. We called the installers back right away. When they returned to our home, they applied more sealer and tried to buff out the streaks. They told us that the streaks would go away after it dried. I called Paul to update him on the situation. He said that the streaks most likely appeared because the installers didn't buff out the sealer properly. He recommended that we try to buff out the streaks ourselves by using cleaning products (acetone, Simple Green, 409, Windex, other industrial cleaners), paper towels, microfiber cloths, a bristled brush and brillo pads. After a trip to Home Depot and $100 later, I was determined to get the countertops back to their original state. Fully aware that the issue could be further exacerbated by using cleaning products, I scrubbed a small 12x12 inch area for hours and then rotated other products for 1 week. In the meantime, we took it upon ourselves to do some of our own research. We called Cosentino reps (the manufacturer of the quartz Silestone product), as well as other quartz fabricators/installers (locally and nationally). Everyone I talked to said that sealer should not be applied to quartz countertops, because quartz is a non-porous material and sealer will compromise the integrity of the resin causing permanent damage, streaks and cloudiness to appear.
We called HOG again, they refuted this and said sealer is perfectly fine to use on quartz due to their Kosher certificate. They sent two technicians (who originally installed the countertops) to our home for the 3rd time in two weeks. The installers told us that we didn't know what we were talking about in regards to sealer. They added more sealer and tried to buff out the cloudy streaks again to no avail. We called Peter (owner of HOG) and shared our concerns w/ him. He said that he would come to our condo with his production manager and the countertop Manufacturer to look at our countertops . Two weeks later, Peter and the Manufacturing rep arrived at our residence, looked at the slab and everyone confirmed that the product is not how it should be. Peter tried to buff it out again w/ a liquid (that was in a Gatorade bottle), with no result. Peter verbally agreed to replace and reinstall the countertops. The Manufacturer mentioned that the quartz should not have been sealed, but also said that the streaks could be caused by a materiel defect. Regardless of who was at fault, he agreed to replace the material at no cost to us because he was willing to do what was and quot;right.and quot; The Manufacturer asked us select another slab, so we picket out a new slab the Cosentino warehouse and were told to set up installation with HOG. We attempted to get ahold of Peter and Paul for two months. We were told that they were out of the country. When we finally got ahold of Peter, he told us that HOG would not install the countertops, unless we paid them to remove the old countertops plus the cost of labor to install the new material. From there, the conversation went south: Peter was incredibly unprofessional and disrespectful. He raised his voice to the point where I had to ask him to please lower his voice and to not cut me off in mid-sentence. After the last phone call in June, Peter continued to send us vulgar and threatening emails.
and quot;If you cant understand how my warranty works or the sealer, then its really not my fault! My job was done with no issues. No further actions will be taken from House of Granite unless labor costs are covered. And please explain me when Paul was in your home because this is a lie. Plus you did never called me right away but couple days after installation, so please at least tell really how it was and stop blaming everything on House of Granite!!!and quot; - Peter, Owner HOG.
Our remaining kitchen renovations have been held up and we've dedicated countless hours to this matter. Our wish is to simply resolve this swiftly and amicably. As a paying customer, we want the services that we contracted out to be upheld by HOG. The final product was seen by all parties. They agreed it was not completed to the standards expected due to defective material and faulty
installation. We signed an agreement with HOG which states that, and quot;In the event of material defect or faulty installation that at the direction of the customer House of Granite will at no cost to the customer replace the counter tops material and labor costs.and quot; HOG is not honoring their contract with us because of a dispute with their supplier/vender over who will pay for labor costs, therefore HOG has a business to vender relationship with the Manufacturer and business terms that do not involve us. We do not care if the defect was due to faulty material or improper installation, we simply want HOG to uphold their legal obligation stated in the contract.
"(removed member name) failed to understand that the Silestone Quartz she selected for her project is warrant by manufacture which in this case is Cosentino Of Chicago distributor of Silestone Quartz . We tried with a lot of effort to help her resolve the problem (removed member name) has with the supplied Quartz . But all her effort was into blaming HGM instead of focusing her effort to have Cosentino replace the material and cover the labor charges but she failed to acknowledge that . Bottom line is that the problem (removed member name) is experiencing is not caused by House Of Granite since House Of Granite was only responsible for fabrication and Installation . With that their is no issue . In our contract it says clearly that material provided by different manufacturers are warrant by does manufacturers . Cosentino failed to resolve the problem that was caused by their material . That's why we discontinued selling Silestone because of the problems with their product, (removed member name) is not the only consumer that is experiencing problems with Silestone Quartz. In fact I found a similar review created by a customer in New York that had a similar problem and that customer new who & understand who was responsible for the material he purchased and his review reflects what Im trying to explain and explained to (removed member name) who failed unfortunately to understand the situation . That review could be found on Yelp . Thank You . Owner ."
As a side note, the installers were quite good, especially the one that was the more quiet of the two.
They installed them, cut the holes for the faucets on-site, caulked them against the wall, then sealed the granite.
The vanity tops were delivered 4 weeks later, by our request. They were simply to drop them off - as per our arrangement. Instead they were kind enough to mount them on the cabinets and caulk them.
Their prices were very competitive, especially on the granite/marble they have in stock. If you choose your slab from MSI or one of the other granite suppliers, there is an upcharge for transporting it/handling, but we found plenty to choose from at the showroom.
I got other prices, but HOG was the lowest. HOG's price included the sink and sink cut-out as well as drilling for the faucet and preparing the edge of the granite (half-bullnose). The overall value was exceptional.
The measurement process went very smoothly. The rep showed up a little late, but he called to warn me that he was running late. The only less-than-ideal element was that there is a bar top projecting into my family room. I specifically asked the rep who did the measurements if I would need additional support for the bar top and was told 'no'. However, the installer strongly recommended putting in additional supports, which I did.
The installation process went very smoothly. The guys were there when they were scheduled to be and were neat and thorough. Overall, I would strongly recommend HOG to anyone who was interested in granite countertops
His crew (2) came out on time three days later. I had already removed all of the old caulking from the old countertops, cleaned the tile, and disconnected all of the plumbing and electrical, and disconnected the disposal from the dishwasher. All the guys had to do was pull the sink out of the old countertop and remove the old laminate. They hauled everything to the garage. I would recommend doing as much prep as you can to make the work go smoother.
The granite install went pretty quickly with the prep work mostly done. They had to do some job site trimming, and covered as best they could with drop cloths. They were very careful negotiating through doors and hallways to bring in the one 9 foot slab, and did a super job of leveling, caulking and sealing. Both were neat and pleasant, and earned their tips. In and out in just under two hours. The granite gives the kitchen a whole new look - they did a nice job fabricating - and the stand alone slab on top of the wine cellar makes it look like one continuous counter. Just perfect, and what I had envisioned.
And I definitely would recommend House of Granite to anyone looking for competitively priced natural stone product and quality workmanship.
The same day we arranged for them (Paul) to come to the house to measure for new countertops. He arrived on time and as scheduled. He suggested we return to the showroom to view the actual slabs so that we could be sure of the color. While he was at the house measuring, he also made some very good suggestions about how to handle some of the tiny details we had not even given thought to.
Installation day was also a breeze. They arrived on time and did a terrific job. THey were very good about double-checking on small details as the job progressed so that we were all in agreement before the work was done and and quot;finaland quot;. A really good experience all around .... and a very competitive price.
