Initial work seemed acceptable with a visual inspection. However, after an extreme winter cold spell, I checked in the attic and discovered the inside of the attic was covered in a thick layer of ice. Upon further inspection, I noticed that the bathroom duct had fallen off the roof vent, causing all the moist bathroom air being vented directly into the attic, thus the cause of the ice buildup. The root cause was two fold. 1. The ducting was attached to the roof sheathing by a couple of roofing nails, instead of properly putting in a metal extension for the vent and attaching the duct like it was connected before they installed the new roof and per the contract to install all vents ?as is?. 2. They had badly misaligned the roof vent to the hole in the roof, thus the majority of the moist air venting right into the roof sheathing instead of outside caused the duct nails to fall out, thus the ducting fell off. 3. Per the mold inspector I had out to the house, he indicated that the ridge vent Thunderbolt had installed did not provide the airflow that the previous metal one had, thus causing the problem to be more significant. I cleaned up as best I could and contacted Thunderbolt. The female owner was rude to me on the phone and asked me ? What I expected them to do about it?. I insisted they come out and look at it, and resolve. One of the workers came out, and saw the problem, and went to work aligning the hole to the vent, and went to get the proper extension so the ductwork could be properly attached. During this time, Thom, which I think is the owners husband arrived, was also rude, took a few steps up the attic stairs and with a mere quick glance, and no measuring, declared that the problem was the attic insulation was to little and was the problem for the moisture, the ice, and resulting mold that was now all over the attic. This 12-14 inches of insulation had been in the attic for almost 20 years with no problems. When I pressed him what they were going to do about the mold, he said they were doing me a favor by fixing the vent and refused any other discussion. When I told him that was not acceptable, he turned around and told me to do whatever I wanted, and walked out of the house. I next tried to resolve this issue through the BBB. Every time I provided facts, Thunderbolt constantly changed their story of the cause, insulation, vent not their responsibility,? until they stopped responding. BBB?s only choice was to offer arbitration for a $500 cost to me, which I could not afford, so at this time my moldy attic is still not resolved. I?ve worked with many contractors providing service over the years, and this was the worse I have ever been treated.
