I contacted Andy for an estimate and he came over and was very knowledgeable. We decided to put 3 lights in my attic. put some wood down on the attic floor, and to install the new attic stairs that I had just purchased.
On March 12, Andy came over with 2 other men, (both very nice). They came on time and they stayed for several hours. They cut a hole in the ceiling for the attic stairs. They installed 3 more lights and put a switch right where you come into the attic making it very convenient to turn on. They cut the plywood I bought and screwed it down making it easier and safer to walk on. They put the wood trim that Andy supplied around the stairs opening.
I had previously asked Andy if I should move some items in the room or put down some tarps. Andy said that he will take care of everything and he will leave everything clean before he left.
All 3 men were hard working, polite and excellent carpenters. The electric work they did was great. They are excellent at many trades. The room was clean and there was nothing for me to do except enjoy my new storage area.
I will not hesitate to call Andy back again for my next project. His price was excellent too. I highly recommend this company.
- The estimate was reasonable and fair. I asked Andy to quote the job with the understanding that I would provide most of the materials. Andy is very polite and soft spoken, and from our original introduction, I had a very good feeling about working with him, and that is important. The estimate was delivered via email within a couple of days. The estimate is not a typical estimate by a building firm where everything is completely detailed, but rather a thoughtful description of the work to be done and the materials Andy will provide. The estimate is more like a letter with generalized bullet points, but it worked for me. I did not contact other remodelers, because this job was a long time coming and I had spoken to other contractors in the past, so I knew that Andy's estimate was more than fair. We agreed to the terms, and the work was to start in 2-3 weeks. I began ordering materials at that time, and everything was delivered and ready when Andy and Carlos arrived on Sept. 16 to begin working.
- Andy and Carlos are very hard workers. They are neat, to boot. Tarps were laid each day to protect the carpet and wood floors, and they probably made one thousand trips up and down the stairs during the course of the job. Also, another thing I noticed immediately was the quiet close to the front door. I can't get my kids to close the door quietly, but Andy and Carlos did each of the thousand times they went in and out of the house. I appreciated that. They were also helpful and careful. Each night everything was cleaned up. The area was vacuumed, the garage was swept, the tarps were removed, and the garbage was bundled. It was still unavoidably messy around the house, but it wasn't a nightmare!
- The work itself was excellent and proceeded in a timely manner. Because the majority of the work was done by Andy and Carlos, the progress on a daily basis was steady, but not overwhelming. If you want a large job done in 3 or 4 days, you will need to hire someone with a larger crew. I liked the fact that Andy performed all the difficult work himself, including rewiring electrical, moving plumbing, and measuring/installing the board and batten wall treatment. Andy will consult with you as the job proceeds. This was easy in my case because I was home during the remodel, so there were never any misunderstandings. He is very patient with modest indecision, as well, because he wants you to be happy. He believes it is your house, and what is done should be how you want it. A third man was brought in to install the tile, and this helped move things along. There are a few imperfections in the tile installation, but they are minor and would not be noticed by anyone other than me. Tiling is a very difficult decision because it is so permanent, and I had a very hard time deciding. I made a number of 11th hour changes, and Andy was very understanding, again he wants the homeowner to be happy. I am very pleased that I was able to modify my original intent. I love how the bathroom turned out.
- The work that was done included 1) complete demolition of the existing bathroom, 2) electrical work including new sconces, upgraded exhaust fan, new outlet boxes, rewiring, can lights, and heated floor, 3) plumbing work including moving all hot and cold pipes behind the walls for a new vanity placement, shower valve relocation, and new valve and floor drain for a freestanding bathtub, 4) tile work including tiling the shower with a mosaic from floor to ceiling, and 12x24 tiles on the floor, 5) carpentry work including installing a board and batten trim around all the walls (this was an 11th hour change not included in the original estimate) and drywall repair, and 6) painting and finishing work including painting all the walls and the trim and installing all the lights, plumbing fixtures, fan, accessories and towel warmer.
