The estimates came in well ahead of the competition. The price wasn't the lowest but I had a good feeling and my gut proved to be correct. The work was completed exactly when they said it would be, no surprises, great work. I even had a problem with one of the gutters that was completely my fault and they came out and fixed it for nothing.

I have also contacted their sister company for roofing bids in the past, although their bids were never selected by my clients. I did have some stumbling blocks in 2007 when a client requested information and pricing on green roofs, though. The office staff displayed a general lack of knowledge on the topic, which was disappointing, and the guy who followed up with me discouraged it. From their website, it appears that this may have since changed, though. I have also had some problems in the past when I have requested a quote for a client, and the vendor has followed up with the client directly instead of going through me, which I found to be highly unprofessional and has discouraged me from working with them in the future. Their pricing for roof tear offs is competitive. My experience with roofing, overall, was suboptimal. I don't know if I would consider them for roof work, although admittedly this has more to do with communications issues than with the quality of the work. I have not used any of their other sister companies.

The work went great. They are great people and I had no problems. I'll continue to use them in the future.

It turned out that the roofing job had not been completed properly. They did not properly install the facia/apron around the entire perimeter of the house. For more than 6 months my attic was filled with squirrels. They caused all kinds of problems and damage. I called one of the men from this company back and he instantly identified 8 holes from damage on just 2 sides of the house. He said that I needed a metal barrier to keep them out. This is something they should have provided. After the worker from Avondale came out and confirmed the problem, I called the owner who refused to answer my calls and resolve this problem with me. I now know that with a tear off this barrier should have automatically been a part of the job. I have had three qualified persons to confirm this was a gross omission. I had to hire someone else to complete the work. Its back to normal now but at an unnecessary added expense to me for more work. At the time this happened I continue to owe a balance of $600 on the approx $1000 debt. Because I had to hire another roofer at an additional cost of $950+(to fix the holes and add proper facia)and a handyman at an additional cost of approx $800(to do clean up, animal removal and attic repair). I also had to pay 1/2 of my neighbors expense to have a tree removed which was the tree that the squirrels were using for their access to my roof. I owed Avondale roofing the balance but ceased the remaining because of this action. Im out more money than I originally should have been.

"Our company feels bad for the destruction and aggravation that the squirrels have caused in the member’s attic. We sent out our superintendent, Steve and one of our foremen, Phil to inspect the roof after she called us. The owner himself also went out on a separate occasion to inspect the roof. They all found that there were no holes in the roof itself. The roof was intact and installed in a professional manner. The squirrels had eaten through the soffit and fascia in multiple areas, and had entered the attic through those holes. Our contract with the member, which we will include, was for a complete tear off and replacement. We did bid other work for her, which included the soffit/fascia and gutter replacement which she did not approve at the time. The total contract was for $11, 000. The member paid $2,000 as a deposit and another $6,550 at the time of completion. She asked to pay the rest of the amount in monthly increments of $200, which we did approve for her convenience. The owner also allowed for a $450 credit on the invoice due to lawn damage she had felt was excessive. After reviewing some pictures of the lawn, it was clear it was a very muddy spring and some of the men's footprints were seen in the mud. It was not excessive, but we had already agreed to credit her for the $450. Again, although we feel the situation is unfortunate, we do not feel responsible for the damage that the member incurred by the squirrels. The balance she owes our company for the work performed is $600. The finance charges on missed payments have been waived."

We have used them every year for the past two to five years. We didn't use them this year because we found a better price. I would give them an A for quality of work and a B on responsiveness. They didn't always show up when they said they would.

The roofing technician requested a separate worker from Avondale Roofing to come out and give an estimate for repair of the tuck pointing. Three days later the tuckpointing expert came out but did not bring a ladder with him so he could not get onto the roof. He said he would come back later that day; he never came back. A week later the second technician returned with a ladder and briefly looked at the tuckpointing near the roof. He came down and said everything looks great. When questioned about the pictures and leak location, he went back up and changed his report that there were some areas that needed fixing. He said he would write up an estimate and call us back the next day. We never heard back from him. We decided to go a different route than with Avondale Roofing. Approximately a month later, I received a call from a worker at Avondale who inquired about the tuck pointing service visit. She was aware of the technicians first visit without the ladder but did not know he returned. She asked if we were still interested in an estimate. She also said that the technician had been recently fired for lack luster performance. She advised that she would call back the next day if she could find his notes on the estimate or they would send out a third technician to redo the estimate. We never heard back from Avondale Roofing about the work or the estimate.

This work was actually done in 2002. We recently sold our home, and are new to Angie's List. The roof still looks beautiful. Les had originally come out to do the estimate, and they were prompt, honest, and courteous. Very importantly, they also did a good job cleaning up, and also left an extra box of shingles in case we needed future replacements. We may need some work done on our new home, and will definitely be looking to contact them shortly.

Just 2 years later (2007), a flashing fell off the roof. We called Avondale and asked them to re-install the flashing, which was re-usable. They charged us $425 for parts and labor. When we called them to do the work, we indicated that we believed it should be done at no charge because it should not have fallen off. They did not tell us that we would be charged and we believe that $425 was excessive, however they told us we had only a 2 year warranty on the original work and it had just expired. Overall, we felt they did really bad work to begin with, and then we felt that they should have stood behind their work and fixed it at no charge, which they did not. The sales staff was arrogant and dismissive when we called to complain. We will never use Avondale again, and we certainly cannot recommend their work. The tuckpointing and side roof in particular were sloppy and poor quality.

"THE FLASHING WAS NOT PART OF THE ROOF WE INSTALLED, AND IN HINDSIGHT THE CUSTOMER IS ALWAYS RIGHT. BUT, WE DID HAVE TO SEND OUT A REPAIRMAN TO REPAIR THEIR FASCIA METAL THAT FELL. THIS WAS NOT ORIGINALLY INSTALLED BY US. THE TUCKPOINTING BEING SHODDY WORKMANSHIP IS THE FIRST I'VE HEARD OF THAT AND AM SORRY TO HEAR IT NOW IN AN OPEN FORUM. WE HAVE FAILED THIS CLIENT ON THE COMMUNICATIONS SIDE AND WOULD CONSIDER RETURNING A PORTION OF THE REPAIR BILL THAT THEY FEEL WAS UNJUSTIFIED. ON A BRIGHTER NOTE: WE DO OVER 500 JOBS PER YEAR AND TO HAVE THIS FEW COMPLAINTS IS GOOD. HOW DO I HAVE MY HAPPY CLIENTS WRITE POSITIVE REVIEWS? LES O'HARA-OWNER"
