Penny solicited his services to me and informed me that he previously held employment at a manufacturer of similar product in need of installation. His services was also recommended by a gentleman who has utilizes his services numerous times in the past. He offered to install the doors at a price I could not refuse, which we agreed upon in October 2011. I waited until November 3 before he arrived at the job site to measure the doors and waited over a week before he came in to install one door. The lockset hardware was not installed on this visit so he rigged the door shut and told me that he would arrive the next day to finish the door. I waited almost two weeks with a door which was locked contrary to fire code before he arrived and finished installing the hardware. I then waited another two weeks before he finally arrived on December 9 to finish the job of installing the second door. Both doors were approximately 1/4" oversized. He mentioned this to me and we discussed some options. The first door was solved by trimming off some metal on the transom side and it was a perfect fit. i agreed to do the same thing with this door. I left the premises during the lunch hour. When I came back, I find that the door frame was botched. He mentioned that he used his partner's SUV to ram the door into place and mentioned that it is merely cosmetic (which is still a big deal to any business management who take pride in the appearance of a facility. I later inspected the door and discovered that it was damaged beyond repair and even the door will not function properly. He also "rigged" this door locked with a rope. I had to install the lockset myself. After this episode, our company's upper management talked to him via phone and informed him that we wish not to continue with his services nor would we be recommending him to anyone else after telling us that the damage was purely cosmetic and that he was not the one who measured the door. Additional details regarding the excessive days wait over his punctuality is that he had excuses for not being able to show up for the job. One excuse was that he had other jobs he had to attend to (which should never be scheduled as to put off a job currently in progress--others need to wait in line just like we do at the garage whenever we seek auto repair and other customer's vehicles are in progress of repair). The second set of excuses I encountered was that his helper was not available on particular days. Penny has no personal transportation as he depends upon a contract employee for transportation. Penny also does not have adequate forms of communication, such as a cellular phone, internet access, e-mail, etc. He relies only upon a home land-line phone which has no caller ID nor voice mail features to capture missed phone calls. My advice to anyone who may know Penny and possibly considering utilizing his services is to avoid his services like the plague. Spend the extra money and get the job done right. Saving a few hundred dollars is now going to cost me another $1,500 for a new door and frame and another $4-500 for a professional to install the door and frame CORRECTLY.
Description of Work: I hired Penny to install two (2) exterior commercial steel doors/transom sets.
