In 2014, the current project required 12 hours to remove a deteriorating door frame and to make a new door frame to secure a new standard 6 panel steel door to fit into a non-standard opening. The project included adding vinyl trim and foam insulation. Everything was cleaned up following the work.
"Thank you for your review. It is always a pleasure to work with you and your wife. I look forward to helping you guys out with any projects that you have in the future. Thanks, Steve"

"Hello [member name removed], I wanted to respond to your review as well, as I also sent you a message. I'm sorry it has been so long to get back to you, as I said in my message the job out of town ended taking 3 weeks to complete as I found additional problems that I could not have foreseen. I hope you will give me chance to explain in person and help you with your project. I want to make this right. Look forward to hearing from you soon. Thanks, Steve"

"Thank you for your review and hope I can be of assistance to help you with any future projects."
"Thank you Mrs. [member name removed] for your review, but however I believe that you have my company confused with someone else that you found from Angies List. I checked my records and do not show I performed any work for you on the date you are stating. I hope I can be of assistance in the future. Sorry about the mix up. Thanks"
"Thank you for your review [member name removed]. I unfortunately think that you might have used someone else you got from Angie's List and confused me with them. I have checked my records and do not show that I performed any work for you. Sorry about the mix up. Thanks."
When we started to interview contractors for a major remodel of our basement, Steve was the only contractor out of the 4 we interviewed that provided additional advice and alternatives. Those alternatives made for a much improved final product. Steve is also one those rare construction types that actually listens to the customer, mulls over options and alternatives, then describes back to you his interpretation of the work so everyone is assured on ?being on the same page?. Steve explains why or why not something can be done. He actually educates the consumer so informed decisions can be made and future projects will run much smoother.
There was a substantial amount of work required for our basement renovation/remodel. Steve ran new electrical to add outlets and light switches, moved water pipes, built walls & closets, laid flooring, stomped ceiling, and installed a new bathroom with vanity, shower, & toilet.
Steve is also a stickler for quality ? whether that be in his own labor or the work of others. He found 2 instances where the original builders had cut corners which caused the residence to be unsafe. Again, Steve pointed this out, explained why it was wrong, what the risks were to leaving it as-is, and gave us a choice of whether to correct it now, later, or leave it.
Be forewarned, if you are obsessive about promptness and timely appointments, you may find fault with Steve. If you have a 5:30 appointment, prepare that Steve may not show up until 6:00. That?s because he is providing the same quality service to another customer as he will provide to you. Steve very willingly and without concern of time will stay until all your questions are answered, you are satisfied, and he knows you understand and are comfortable with decisions and work quality. If that means explaining something 2 or 3 times, Steve does it without hesitation. Sometimes, that concern for customer satisfaction runs him late to appointments. Personally, I?d rather have a caring contractor than a punctual one.
The quality of Steve?s work is near perfection. He takes enormous pride in his work and it shows. Unlike other contractors who had to hire out a lot of the specialty work (plumbing & electrical for example), Steve can do it all (except laying carpet; he did an excellent job laying laminate flooring). This skill means a generally lower per hour charge (less overhead).
I highly recommend Steve and Around the Home for any major renovation work. He did a tremendous job on our basement facelift.
The 3' x 5' area floor tiles to be replaced I tried to find tiles to match the linoleum to look better, and he says he has to use a transition piece, and buys a black molded piece to use which is so ugly with no call to me. Then he forgets to include the metal bar for the transition piece on the side near the pantry, and places it on top of the linoleum now the transition piece it too high. Already my pantry door has to be trimmed because of the transition piece now it has to be trimmed again because it is on top of the linoleum. Dirt can get underneath it. My idea is if the 12" tiles had been cut smaller, and designed better why even have a transition piece at all?
Steve does not provide estimates. He does not tell you later he charges for getting parts that are grouped together not individually priced. Steve stated he could not find a better transition piece than this. Yet at Lowe's there are tile edging which are metal for this exact purpose. I have seen them at a the store Mattress Firm for transitioning carpet to tile.
"Thank you for your review (member name removed) . I would like to say that an estimate was not requested from (member name removed) and I do give free estimates. As I investigated the old tile floor I found that it wasn't properly installed, I pointed this out to (member name removed). I installed the proper cement board with mortar and properly installed the tiles. In doing so this made the tile floor taller than the existing linoleum around it, thus making installing a transition strip to be necessary. (member name removed) linoleum floor was especiallly dark and finding a transition strip that matched very difficult. I purchased a black vinyl transition strip and presented it to (member name removed), stating that the choices were very limited. I asked her if she was fine with it or if she would like to try to find something else. She ok'd using the piece and I installed it's track under the tiles. She said after it was installed she wished I used something else, but by that time it was to late. She states I forgot to install a metal bar near her pantry I do not know what she is talking about. Everything that was necessary for installation of the transition strip was used. She called me later with her concern about the small gap between the transition strip and the floor. I told her that I would come back to fill in the gap, but told me that she would take care of it. I was able to trim down the pantry door to clear the new floor without any problems to the door. The tile floor I installed was done properly and the only way to not have to use a transition strip is if I replaced all of the flooring in the kitchen. As far as pricing, I stated to (member name removed) that I charge my time for the time I am on the job and also any time I have going to get material for the project. I feel that is only fair to me and to the customer. I appreciate all constructive criticism that customers can provide, although if someone is unsatisfied with choices please speak up so I can either make it right or present other ideas."
See above all went very well even though I did take a few days longer than was previously figured.
He added multiple new outlets and lighting per my request, and installed the new ceramic tile flooring. He then installed the new cabinets which included a lazy susan plus a pantry with swing outs. He installed all the new appliances. The countertop was installed by the company that made it (solid surface) but he installed the faucet and all the other new plumbing, including the dishwasher. He moved a water line to accommodate the refrigerator moving from one wall to another.
We started on July 5th and by July 22nd we were almost entirely done except for the countertop. We waited until July 29 for this to be installed. He then completed the plumbing needs. The cabinets included crown molding.
Meanwhile I had hardwood floors installed in my home by a hardwood floor dealer. The original front door threshold did not match the new flooring. I purchased a new front door which Mr Nowack picked up for me (saving me delivery charges), then installed it in one morning and it fits perfectly. It is a big improvement over the old door.
I plan a few more renovations yet this year but am happy to share my photos of before and after kitchen with others who may be looking for a good carpenter.
