About a week passed and I didn't get the quote so I called the salesman on the Friday before Memorial day weekend. I still had not received a call back, so I phoned him again at the beginning of the following week. Still no call back, so I left a message for him at SaveWood's main office number. I received a call the next day telling me they couldn't do the $1600 job because it was too small. They would only come out for the $3200 job. When I said that I have the prices written down by their estimator on his card I was told it didn't matter, the project was too small and wouldn't cover their trip fees, etc.
I believe since their employee provided the quoted price, they should have honored it. If their employee needed more detailed training on pricing, they need to provide that. If the job was too small, the estimator should have told me that when providing the original quote or they should have had someone accompany him if he was new. Part of doing business is cover costs, I understand but, a quoted price should be honored. I was very straight forward about the work to be done. If they have a project minimum, it should have been communicated by their salesman. I was very unhappy with the lack of communication and professionalism.
Mike gave me a competitive price along with pros and cons. They use a pretty detailed technique and I did the research on the technique so I felt their technique would last on my kitchen cabinets that get heavy wear and tear.
Jorge is a very patient man! He was the person in my house at the end doing the cabinet boxes.
Here's how it works:
1. They come and take a door and bring it back in a week or so for you to approve
2. Once you approve, they come and take all your doors and drawers -- those get done at the shop
3. you don't hear from them for about a month -- don't panic, but communication isn't their strong suit
4. they set up time for the guys to come into your house
5. once in the house:
day one - clean and prep the cabinet boxes
day two - priming
day three - more priming
day four - six - staining/painting
6. they leave and you don't hear from them -- but in reality the boxes need to dry and cure
7. they will call you to set up time to come back and install the doors and drawers and do touch ups
8. in your house for a day or two to put everything together
9. whole process start to finish - plan on 8 weeks
As I said, overall I love my cabinets and the workmanship is really good and a good value -- communication could be improved so that the customer feels comfortable about what is going on.
I would recommend them (and have) but I do warn people about the communication piece
After checking Angie's list we agreed to give work to this provider and the saleswoman Nancy promised that refinishing the doors and drawers will take 3 weeks followed by 3 days of in home work to finish the frames and a day to install the doors. After that a "proposal" was signed which mentions approx. 4 -6 weeks but Nancy promised that it wont take that long.
The doors were taken on 29th May and the first work for refinishing frames started on June 28 after cleaning on June 27. It took 4 weeks to start on finishing the frames. (In the meantime there were no updates. We had to ask why it is taking long) After 4 weeks it took 1.5 weeks to complete the refinishing on July 8.
Then the final ting of installing doors was remaining which was one today on July 24.
So the promised duration was 3 weeks + 4 days and it took 8+ weeks to complete. We were never notified of any delay by the owner Mike and Nancy.
On July 24 last contact so far when job was done, I demanded a discount on the final payment to accommodate for the delay caused. Mike the owner was on phone. We had a heated argument where he insisted I have signed on a contract when there was no official contract as such. Only a "proposal" which he calls contract. I wanted to settle it amicably so that we agree upon a discount in final payment to compensate for the delay.
Instead he came to my house and barged in with 2 guys and in loud noise instructed his people to start removing the doors. I tried to stop him and there was some pushing and shoving in my house which was traumatic to my wife . He was planning to remove all the doors and take them and that's when I called 911 (police) to lodge a complaint and they suddenly left.
This is a horrific unprofessional experience from a contractor who does not understand reason and just barges in to your property. This is not the way to do business. I am actually amazed by good reviews about this contractor and wonder whether those reviews are really true. Especially, after a bad review you suddenly see a good review which makes the suspicion stronger.
Update July 25
The contractor and I decided to settle the matter. He did not give a discount for delay but partly I was in the fault as I trusted the sales lady and did not put a completion date on the proposal.
After all this the project is complete, it took 3 months total for the job since I signed the proposal to get it complete instead of typical 1-1.5 months. I had 20 doors and 8 doors.
The individual workers who came to our house were wonderful, but the owner has been nothing but a pain to work with, and now he won't respond to requests for someone tp come out and finish up the retouching of mistakes that have not been fixed.
We signed a contract on 8/10/13 to have them perform the work and gave them a 50% deposit. They were to have someone come out to remove the door fronts and drawers and bring them to their shop to be worked on, then someone would come to the house and refinish the cabinet frames. A week or so after signing the contract but before the workers came out to remove the doors we had a family problem and didn't feel that we could afford the work at that time. We asked to cancel the contract and the salesman told us that the owner never cancelled projects but she would have him call us. He did call, we explained the problem and he said that he didn't cancel deals, but in our case he would consider it and get back to use. He never called back. About the end of Sept we called and had them come out to start the job. They removed the doors and drawers and said that they would take a few weeks to work on and then they would call to schedule coming out to finish the job. They never called.
We called and asked when they would be coming out and were called back by the saleslady who said that the owner was having problems with projects because a lot of workers had quit and he was backed up. The story kept changing with the calls and the owner never would talk to us directly. Finally in the beginning of December we called and said that the project had be done by Chirstmas as we had company coming for the Holidays and Savewood was violating the time provisions of the contract that the owner refused to let us cancel back in Aug. We told them that since they had forced us to live up to the contract that we felt that they should also live up to the contract.
Right before Christmas we had a worker come to the house and start the refinishing. He did a nice job and was trying hard, but there were several problems with drips in the primer that were not seen due to glare coming through the windows while he worked. The drips became more and more apparent with the layers of stain applied but only seen at night when daylight was not causing glare in the window.
The worker was called off of our job to another job before all of the touch up was finished, but he told us that the crew that would be coming to reinstall the doors would be able to take care of the problems.
The door crew was not able to take care of them. They hung the doors and drilled new holes for our new handles and pulls and generally did good work. But a couple of the doors were hung crooked, and for one door their remedy for the problem was to stick some paper (maybe a matchbook cover) between the frame and the hinge to try to level the door, it looks tacky when you open the door and see it there.
We showed them the drips and stain issues and they said they didn't have the tools needed to fix them but they would make sure a service person came out. They never called us, as usual.
We sent pictures via email to the saleslady and finally she called to say that a serviceman would be out the next week. The man showed up, took a look at the severity of the drips (I wish I could attach the pictures to the review) and said that he hadn't been told how bad they were and he didn't have the tools and materials he needed (even though we had sent pictures). He fixed a couple of minor issues and said someone else would be back. .We asked that someone come out in the evening so that the sunlight glare wouldn't be a problem. Our request was ignored
The next man to come out told us the same story, he didn't know how bad the problem was and he wasn't equipped to deal with it.
Finally the second serviceman came back a week later and this time he had what he needed to work on the drips. He cleaned up the problem and started restaining the wood. The worst problem was with the vertical frame piece in between the 2 panes of the kitchen window right in front of the sink. He did the best he could but again that night without the sunlight glaring through the windows we were looking at 2 different colors of wood. And of course the problem is still right in front of us when we wash dishes every night.
So it's been several months since they last were here. We have sent emails to the saleslady and to the companies web site info address with pictures attached and we never get a response. The process has been going on now for 9 months and we would really like to get the last piece of wood stained properly with some coming out in the evening to see the problem in our light. If they had done this the first time we asked last winter when night came early it would have been simple, now someone will need to be here around 8:30 or 9 p.m. to really see the problem.
The individual workers were nice, efficient and courteous but it's too bad they work for someone who doesn't seem to care about anything except his bank balance.
