Yes, I recommend this pro
Let me say upfront that I don't make a habit of overdrawing my checking account.  I can count on one hand the times it happened over the entire course of my adult life.  As a matter of fact the last time it happened was in 2001.  My father was dying due to cancer and I didn't catch a math error.  When you live from check to check and frequently spend every dime you have, any tiny little math error can become a financial disaster.
Around the beginning of December, I accidentally got overdrawn on my Peoria Community Bank checking account.  On Friday evening after going online to check that week's debit card purchases, I discovered that I had overdrawn on Wednesday of that week due to an automatic bill pay that I had scheduled earlier in the month and overdrew even further with a couple of small debit card purchases on Friday.  I'm thankful the bank covered these for me.  They had recently changed their on-line "look" and I had been unknowingly glancing at the "last month's balance" rather than current balance prior to going to the second screen to view debit card purchases. I had no idea that I was even getting close to a zero balance.  I went to the bank first thing the following morning and covered the overdrafts.  I was pleasantly surprised when I learned that the bank would not be charging me the typical NSF fee. What a very nice thing to do!
Then, to my horror and embarrassment, just days later, a check I had written to the Secretary of State for my license plate sticker hit the same account.  Had I realized at the time that the SOS check was written on this same account,  I would have covered that as well, but I mistakenly thought I had written the check on my other checking account.  I carry both checkbooks with me.
Well this time the bank decided not to cover the overdraft, can't say I blame them, and returned the check to the Secretary of State and charged my account a $30 NSF fee.  I went to the bank that very same day and again, covered the overdraft and the NSF fee. Later, I called the Illinois SOS and asked whether they would resubmit the check to my bank and was told they do not resubmit NSF checks. They instead make you cover the check with cash or with a money order and charge you $19.00 for the trouble. Unfortunately, the State of Illinois does not cut any slack by resubmitting NSF checks.
I decided that having two checking accounts was just not a good idea for me and went back to Peoria Community Bank and closed the account since the SOS check would not be presented a second time.  The Branch Manager, Kerry, was very nice about the whole thing.  I asked if I could also have the $30.00 NSF fee refunded since the check was not going to be presented a second time.  She said that was not her decision to make because I had opened the account through the Knoxville branch.  She made a call to that branch and found that the responsible person was out.  With further pleading on my part, she made a call to the Bookkeeping department and asked for the refund on my behalf.  They decided to refund the $30.00.
Because Peoria Community Bank did such a nice thing for me, I wish that I could have kept my account there and closed the other one instead.  But unfortunately, the other bank provides overdraft protection, which I, apparently, need.  But I am very grateful that Peoria Community Bank was generous enough to not make me pay for my honest mistake, even though they had every right to. This is a great bank with wonderful staff!
