Mike, John, Andy - everyone we worked with was great! Very professional and responsive to all our questions, concerns and even changes. We were coordinating the deck installation with a new patio door and they made sure the enough progress was made on the deck as to not delay the installation of the door. Starting to early in the season we ran into weather delays but as soon as the weather cooperated they were back at the house. GREAT COMPANY!!!!

The actual work was fine, His lack of communications was terrible! Never returned calls. One appointment was made in stone and he was a no show and did not call. He blamed the weather which was limiting but the majority of work (building the flow boxes was done in the shop). Also had personnel problems, I live in Palatine and he is based out of Palatine but the closeness was no advantage. His refusal to return calls and keep us posted was totally unacceptable

American Deck Builders tore down our old deck, hauled it away, installed proper support for the new deck and built a new 2-level deck for us. Mike was great and also offered some design assistance as well. They took care of all permit work with the Village. Great experience. Would recommend them to everyone.

They removed a small concrete patio, perhaps 8'x 8' and replaced with approximately a 14' x 12'. Unfortunately, the new patio settled within a few months. After reviewing the determined water had gotten under the concrete near the air conditioner. They agreed to cut out a re-pour that section about 6'x 4'. We had the air conditioner removed, they poured the concrete and we had the conditioner re-installed. This time they poured the section about 1" higher than the rest of the patio creating a tripping hazzard. Their solution was to grind the concrete along the edge of the high section which helped reduce tripping but looked terrible. Their next solution was to coat the whole patio with a concrete topping. Although they taped plastic to cover the house and wood railing it stuck to the siding. After several calls they came out and cleaned the siding. Within 1 year the topping is peeling off. When I discussed taking them to court I was informed I could. They would declare bankruptcy and have to open under a different name. We reviewed their references, went to the homes and talked with the customers and they had done a good job. They blamed an inexperienced foreman and said he no longer works for the company. By far this is the worst experience we have had with a company.
Response from AMERICAN DECK BUILDERS INC
"There's 2 sides to every story.........We initially installed a new concrete patio for the (removed member name) in May of 2006 for $8,400. This patio was every bit of 500 sq. ft. and was 12" thick in some areas due to 'ground slope'. They contacted me in 2009 (3 years later) to point out a crack that had appeared. Every concrete contractor I know only gives a 1 year warranty against cracking on any kind of concrete work in our climate. I give 2!..Although this was past the warranty period, I made an exception for the (removed member name) because my salesman at the time should have realized that the area under A/C unit needed to be included in the concrete coverage or the new concrete patio placed all around it would create a water trap whenever it rained or snowed. It was easy to see that this caused the crack. I took it upon myself to saw-cut and jackhammer out the cracked area adjacent to the A/C area. I also handed (removed member name) $200 in cash to help pay the $400 it was going to cost to temporarily move the A/C unit out of the way. We then poured new concrete in the A/C area and the area we had removed (6x5 and 8x8). The areas perimeter were lined in heavy expansion joint material to allow enough room so that the surrounding areas would not crack as the new areas cured and expanded...The new area did wind up being 1/8" higher than the surrounding area...Not a trip hazard by any means. Once cured, we cut out the visible felt and replaced it with an expensive Sitka self leveling adhesive. They weren't happy that the new concrete didn't match the 3-year old concrete. At that point I should have walked away. In the interest of trying to make them happy, I applied a top coat to the entire patio (new and old) The product used was "Spray-deck" by Increte systems. A very expensive product and time consuming process compounded by the fact that we had weekly rainstorms constantly delaying the work. Once installed, I explained that this type of product would eventually wear off to the point that all of the concrete would then match. I wasn't promising a refresher coat every year. Although, I did go back about 9 months later to patch up some areas that had started to flake off (probably due to moisture on the surface when we were finally able to perform the application).....My original labor and material cost was about $7,200 and I spent another $5,000 3 years later. All in all a very frustrating experience where I had to say "stop". In hindsight, I just should have said "Sorry, lady, but it's past the warranty period" like everyone else would have. I'd be willing to bet that, even though this is now 8 years old, there are probably no structural cracks on the patio. I'm still in business. Not planning to go bankrupt and will offer the (removed member name) a cleaning and sealing this year at "no charge" if they want it. An unfortunate situation that had "Murphy's Law" written all over it."

Vinyl deck on my home is about 10 years old. Original boards were hollow and started to warp and crack. Contacted original deck manufacturer who provided me a recommended contractor and contacted Mike and estimates were pretty close. Mike's level of knowledge and vision for improvements made it a pretty easy decision. The deck looks better than it did when it was first put in and the warranty MIke provided makes it all the better.

The design work was beautiful. We needed a ramp incorporated into the deck and he was very cooperative, and worked really hard to give us a finished product that was exactly what I wanted. Mike was very pleasant to work with. He put in a lot of time with getting the building permits and was very flexible throughout the project.

Mike was very knowledgeable and was good on his word for everything he said he would do. The job was completed on time, for the price he quoted us and the plans that we agreed on. He communicated with us throughout the whole process so we always knew what was going on. There were no surprises. There were a couple of small problem areas and he took care of those too. The deck looks better than we had expected it to.

American Deck Builders, Inc. were very professional. They came right on time and there were no delays. Cory was our contact person and supervisor and he was so helpful and knowledgeable. They were totally responsive. The deck is incredibly sturdy.
