RJ Kuhn does a good job but they are expensive. They charged me $225 above the quoted installation price to replace a simple shutoff valve and re-hang the power vent exhaust pipe. I consider this excessive. Next time I have plumbing work I'll shop around more.

The job was to remove a functional water heater so that basement tile could be removed and reinstall it afterwards. This required two trips (two days).

They send out ONE guy. He moved like a snail. Back and forth and back and forth to the truck. So much wasted time. I also got charged for the time it took him to write up the bill and they got mad when I protested. I have now hired another company -- three guys who got done quickly. Big difference in cost.

We received prompt and excellent service! We highly recommend RJ Kuhn and their guy, Todd, he was great!

We've had them do work for us numerous times and we've been very happy with them. The supply hose for the hot water in our upstairs bathroom sink just gave way and my wife happen to be standing right there so we got it turned off before it did too much damage. We called them to fix it. They said it was like winning the lottery that we were there when it happened or we could have come home to water in the ceiling. They are not cheap, but they are good.

Great prompt service

I called Jim at Kuhn to get an estimate on replacing the blower wheel on my furnace. He gave me an estimate to install the part. I was very specific about the part needed and he said he could get it that day and did not mention that the price was actually 25% higher than he had just quoted. After confirming that someone would be home, I called back to schedule the appointment and spoke with Jim again, he did not mention that the price would be 25% higher than his quote. Michelle, from their office, called later to give me an estimated time of arrival and did not mention that the cost would be 25% higher. When the technician arrived, he installed the part and then presented me with a bill that was 25% higher than the quote I had gotten. When I asked about the change in price, the technician advised that I could buy the Kuhn Care package for an additional $120 and it would reduce my costs. The Kuhn Care package provides a discount of 30% on parts/services, including the service just provided. I agreed to purchase the Kuhn Care and paid for it but my bill was not reduced by 30%. I contacted Jim back regarding the higher charge and the discount not being 30% on the Kuhn Care that I just purchased. Jim told me that the part was more than he had quoted and that the Kuhn Care discount was not always 30%, despite their agreement saying it was. Apparently the amount of the discount is at their discretion. Jim said that he had "waived" other charges that they usually charge and that "it doesn't pay to help people". Jim's response to my questions and frustration was insulting and unprofessional. Jim, Michelle and the technician all had opportunities to tell me that the cost was going to be higher than quoted. I was very specific as to the part and service needed so that I would get an accurate proposal and avoid this type of hassle. I am more upset by the response to my questions than the increased cost. We had a larger project at a different property that we need completed. I will remove RJ Kuhn from consideration on that project.

They were great.  From the owner coming out to price the job to the men who can to do the work they were all very clean, professional and courteous.  One item did not come in on time which added a delay to the end of the job.  They kept us informed and immediately completed the job when the item came in.  I would highly recommend.

This is the second time I used RJ Kuhn.  Although the prices are high, the work is done correctly on the first attempt, and their work does not create new problems.

We've use them for 8 years. They're always good. We liked their professionalism and punctuality but not for the price. They always do a good job and they'll call back whenever we use them.

Quality work. Very high labor and parts costs. Too many total hours at high rate made final bill much too high.

I contacted the company after normal business hours and explained that when I flushed the toilet it backed up into my tub. The gentleman I spoke with asked if I would be comfortable waiting until morning to avoid additional after-hour expenses. I was also, advised that it would be alright to take a quick shower, but to avoid doing laundry. I was told that I would recieve a call at 7:00 A.M. to set up a time for service. At exactly 7:00 AM, Michele called to inform me that Todd was available to be at my home by 8:30 AM, and he arrived at 8:20. When Todd arrived he asked exactly what I had noticed when I flushed the toilet. He checked the outside clean-out and determined that was flowing well, so the blockage had to be inside the home. Todd determined he had to pull the toilet and clean the drain from there. The toilet was very old, so it took a while to get it removed, but once he did it didn't take him long to clear the drain. I had a new toilet purchase already and I asked Todd if it would be just as easy to replace the old one since he had already removed it. He said it would only take him about 10 minutes longer and he would be happy to do it. I couldn't be happier with the service that RJ Kuhn provided. The technician was polite, informative and worked quickly the whole time he was at my home. Also, all the mess was cleaned up and all garbage disposed of. I will definitely use this company again and recommend them to anyone that is in need of plumbing services.

They came and fixed the problem the same day. I'll definitely use them again.

Replaced toilet and it perfectly fine!

The above rating was due to the numerous times it took RJ Kuhn to diagnose the root cause of an issue. It started out originally being diagnosed as tree roots, to blockage to low pressure toilet. As they charge for their time from their office to your house, these numerous attempts to identify the issue are very expensive. Additionally, some plumbers came out and did not adjust the toilet water reservoir level instead recommended a high pressure toilet bowl or identified blockage under the floor that had no pipes (Per the plans). Overall service level of the individual plumbers varies and diagnosis of the root cause raised concerns. Lack of visibility of owner on the issue was discerning and contributed to the misdiagnosis.
When complaints finally reached the owners ears, he did come out. He acknowledged that his plumber was not identify the correct issue.
Repair was finally done and it was finally corrected. However, numerous visits to identify cause resulted in them losing my future business and not recommending them to others.

UPDATE: RJ Kuhn was retained to investigate a plumbing issue at an investment property in the Fox Valley. Work completed on the unit and that review is documented in a previous review. The unit in question resulted in a FORCIBLE ENTRY AND DETAINER (Eviction) action against the tenants in Kane County Illinois. Trial was held on 12/3/2013 between the landlord and tenants. During the trial it was identified that Tenant's attorney had RJ Kuhn documentation of repairs done on the unit that was not provided by the landlord nor the Landlord's attorney. This even included service calls after the tenants were evicted. On 12/4/2013 I called RJ Kuhn and discussed with Michelle how the tenant's attorney obtained the documentation without my authorization. She stated they discussed it internally and stated RJ Kuhn decided to release the information to the tenants attorney. RJ Kuhn never called me on the issue to request authorization or let me know they were going to release the information to tenant's attorney. Fortunately, the judge did not allow the information to be used in court due to it not complying with agreed upon discovery motion. However, it was very unprofessional and very discerning that RJ Kuhn would be willing to disclose information to a third party without owner's knowledge or permission. It may not be an issue for homeowners who need a toilet fixed or minor repairs; but for larger customers, you may want to formalize your relationship with a non-disclosure clause to mitigate your potential exposure. In summary, I do not recommend RJ Kuhn to others based upon my previous review and their willingness to release information to non customers. Very unprofessional in a nutshell.

It went great. Rod found the problem with the toilet in the master bath and identified that the coupler was missing and he had to get additional parts which the previous plumber did not do. Also he spent a great amount of time routing all the sinks and shower and made all toilets flush better and stop any leaks etc. Rod was here from 10:00am until 1:00pm and worked very hard to get all items fixed.

They were able to repair the water tank at a relatively low cost, whereas another company may have said It needed replacement. We have used them for over 30 years. I would highly recommend them to anyone. They will advise of when they will be in the area and are very upfront with the hourly rate. They also will advise about concerns even beyond the scope of plumbing and recommend what companies to call. They have also remodeled (2) of our bathrooms and I would highly recommend them for remodeling work as well.

Workmanshipnfrom the contracted individuals was not good. When we did have a problem they blamed us for the poor work they had signed off on.
eWe had another bathroom redone for 1/2 the cost, it looks much more professional.
Within 2 years of the job we were replacing granite counters due to poor quality installation
We would never recommend them as contractor on a job and make sure to get multiple quotes they will be the most expensive.

Very impressed with entire process, from selections to finished product. Not only did they do good work, but they cleaned up after themselves each day.
