It was cheaper to order new mechanics rather than have the old repaired. The new one was ordered and took about a month but it's now up and running like new! Make sure you oil the mechanics about once a year. A very expensive lesson learned. Did not know and never oiled it for close to 20 years. They were surprised it lasted that long!

I consented to having the electric clock converted to a battery operated clock (as did the online reviewer). When I returned to CCC, I was caught off guard when I was handed a clock with a rough circle cut out of the back, the new access for changing the battery, no attempt was made to smooth the cut. The back also had 2 protruding springs with screws which the clock did not have when I agreed to have it serviced. There was no attempt to clean the glass or wood as had been described in detail by the online reviewer. Knowing that the clock had been totally disassembled in order to be converted, at the very least I expected that the glass would have been cleaned, in fact, there were smudges that I had not noticed previously on the interior of the glass. I refused to accept the clock requesting that the clock receive more attention. On my next trip to CCC the clock looked better and I was given all the parts of the clock that had been replaced (the decorative second hand..I won't go into the fact that I was not informed that some face parts would be replaced). The clock sat on my mantle a few days before I heard a sound that I discovered to be the metal ring around the glass having fallen out. Upon closer inspection it appeared to me that the clock had not been assembled correctly. On my next visit to CCC I presented the clock and questioned the assembly. I was told that when clocks are converted that sometimes things don't go back the way they were previously and that the solution would be to glue the ring in place. Having lost any confidence I might have hoped to have with CCC, I was not going to leave the clock to be further adapted and if gluing was indeed the solution I had more confidence in myself doing it in a way that would not deface the clock further. Upon returning home, in less than 10 minutes, my husband carefully studied, disassembled the clock and reassembled it by putting the ring in place before sliding the battery assembly and clock face into the housing--no glue needed and there are no longer springs and screws protruding from the back of the clock because they belonged on the inside of the housing.
Response from CHICAGO CLOCK CO

"I am so sorry you had a less than excellent experience with us. Our entire team at CCC take great pride in what we do and how we care for our customers and their precious family heirlooms. Converting from electric to battery is always delicate; we have to remove all the electric components to make room for the battery operated components. With this, the metal on the back of the clock needed to be cut to make room for the battery. That fine piece of metal should have been smoothed prior to you picking up the clock. I apologize that it was not and that the clock was not returned to you cleaned and polished. Lastly, the metal ring that fell off clearly was not placed on the clock properly prior to being returned to you. We delivered a less than excellent experience all the way around and I cannot apologize enough. Our company president, Jason Matthiesen, would be more than happy to discuss your experience. He can be reached at (630) 986-9210. We sincerely hope that you will give us another opportunity to help you with your clock or watch needs."

I have done business with Chicago clock for 40+ years and my family before me.  They are knowledgeable and up front in their dealings.  There are very few businesses who can work on the traditional weighted clocks (grandfather, grandmother, cuckoo, etc.)
satisfactorily.  I hope they pass on their craft to the next generation and never go out of business.
Response from CHICAGO CLOCK CO

"Thank you for your feedback. While we always strive to get A's across the board we realize this is not always obtainable. I wanted to address the "B" we received for price. I understand that the cost may seem high, however the amount of hours that go into repairing a clock like yours is quite extensive. Most repairs on Grandfather clock take up to a full day to complete at the bench, plus all of the testing and regulation that goes into each and every clock, requires quite a lot of time. If you wanted to contact me regarding the full process of what goes into servicing a grandfather clock, I would be happy to discuss that with them. We appreciate your business and look forward to working with you in the future. Thank you, Jason General Manager"

I brought in my broken clock which stopped working after a battery corroded the terminals. They said that movement could not be repaired but had to be replaced. The new movement is pricier than I expected but it does work.

WHEN OUR MANTEL CLOCK STOPPED WORKING, WE TOOK IT TO THE CHICAGO CLOCK CO AT 431 OGDEN AVE IN CLARENDON HILLS, IL TO SEE IF IT COULD BE REPAIRED OR CLEANED. WE WERE TOLD THAT THE MECHANICAL COMPONENT WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED AT A COST OF OVER $300.OO. WE DECIDED TO THINK ABOUT IF WE FELT IT WAS WORTH THE MONEY AS IT DID HAVE SOME SENTIMENTAL VALUE. THE GENTLEMEN IN THE STORE THAN ASKED IF WE WOULD BE INTERESTED IN REPLACING THE MECHANICAL WORKS WITH A QUARTZ BATTERY OPERATED COMPONENT FOR $66.OO. THIS WAS THE PERFECT SOLUTION, WE GOT TO KEEP OUR CLOCK (AND DON'T) HAVE TO WIND IT ANY MORE AND IT WAS VERY REASONABLE. WE REALLY APPRECIATED HIS HELP.

$495
The clock has been back and ticking away for over a month. It seems to be working perfectly. It's good to hear it chiming again. The $495 seemed pretty pricey, but there aren't many places that do this work, so it's difficult to compare prices. They told me the clock should be good for another 30 years before it needs another overhaul (tho the warranty is only good for 1 year). When I left the clock for the repair, I asked the serviceman for information on how/when to oil the clock so as not to have this problem again. He told me that when the clock was delivered to my home, the delivery person would provide that information. Well, the deliveryman told me otherwise, that they no longer provide oiling lessons/instructions because owners have sometimes oiled the gears by mistake. Instead, they will contact me every 3 years to remind me it's time for them to come out and oil my clock ($95). What a racket!

THEY WERE VERY HELPFUL AND REPAIRED THE CLOCK BEAUTIFULLY. THEY WERE JUST GREAT, AND HAD A REASONABLE PRICE. THEY CAME ON TIME, AND EVEN CAME BACK OUT WHEN I HAD A PROBLEM. THEY WERE VERY PROFESSIONAL AND POLITE. THE SERVICEMAN LEFT SOME EXTRA INSTRUCTIONS, IN GREAT DETAIL, ON HOW TO CARE FOR THE CLOCK.
