Kevin had done the roof on my 1929 Oak Park home about 5 years ago. I've moved to Evanston and wanted to work with him again as they'd done a nice job. He came, as promised and felt the roof was "too complex" for his team -- I appreciated his honesty and he referred me to two other roofing companies. His team can handle one or two complex issues but my home has several flat roof areas and work in the past had been jerry-rigged. I would call again.

Called after hours and was contacted the next day by Kevin. I said that I would like him to come out and quote my upcoming project. I was at work when he called and was expecting to set a time and he'd come by and we'd go from there. What I got was being asked qualifying questions to determine if I was worth the time to come out. Kevin asked "what are you asking for?" I tried to explain that I wanted to lay a slab in the backyard. He said "whats the size?" I seriously had no clue and guesstimated. He then explained that they have a minimum of 350sf. I said I believe that it would exceed that but if it didn't so be it. He then asked if he could stop by in the next couple hours. I said I am not home but my wife is. He then became condescending saying that he will only come out once. I was confident that my wife could point to the area of what "big guy" Kev could look at. We then set a time to come out this week. I had to cancel my appt. I called the office to reschedule. No phone call back. I called again....nada. So bottom line my job ended up being close to 800sf. DB (look up def in Urban dictionary) Kevin & Bald Eagle construction could care less about the opportunity and apparently "My call" isn't important to them. I am more annoyed with Kevin's attitude and the unprofessional attitude that he represents. He can't even return a phone call to reschedule. So wifes make sure your husbands call because Kevin doesn't want to waste his time.......what a small man with a big attitude.

Response from Bald Eagle Construction
Not sure what to say here except little of what the member reports is accurate. What is accurate is that our minimum for flat work is 350 sq. ft. and the member did call and cancel their scheduled appointment. The appointment was set up for Wednesday. Bald Eagle re-sets all cancelled appointments by calling back on Fridays to set up for the following week. One day after the cancelled appointment (Thursday), the member submitted their report to Angie's List saying we are unresponsive. In todays "I want everything now" world Bald Eagle may fall short sometimes. I am the owner and I try to get back with everyone who calls in. In regards to the member's suggestion that we do not work with wives, we went back through all appointments for the last month and over 56% were with women. I appreciate all inquiries we receive from Angie's List members and endeavor to provide great service to all.

They were prompt, accurate, knowledgeable and seemed quite reasonable, but the gentleman who came was not easy to talk to, and the estimate came with a long formal series of conditions which - justified or not - contributed to an air of uneasiness and hard-to-work-with rigidity.

Response from Bald Eagle Construction
We had to go back (6) months in our records to find the proposal we sent last year to the A.L. member. I am the owner and I visited personally with the member and when I pulled up the record I immediately remember the house and the owner. The member's roof was in a very dilapidated state. It was necessary for me to send our general foreman to inspect the roof before we could quote. As such, there were indeed a number of stipulations included in our proposal. If I had to quote the roof again, I would follow exactly the same procedure. We are sorry if our proposal to the member seemed rigid, but we were merely being as comprehensive and clear as to what we were bidding and what we were NOT bidding. I have found that a well written proposal usually all but eliminates confusion and surprises if we are chosen to do the work. We certainly do appreciate having had the opportunity to quote.

Kevin was very responsive initially and we had high hopes based on his rating and other reviews. We scheduled an appointment for an estimate on April 8th. Kevin was VERY clear that he would arrive no earlier than 3:30 and no later than 4:30. Perfect. He called at 2:15 the day of and left a voicemail informing me that I had to return his call within 15 minutes to confirm. I was driving home from work to meet him at our scheduled time and could not answer my phone or get my voicemail until after his 15 minute window and he did not show at all. I returned his call in an effort to reschedule and have gotten no response. Who does that?! Very unprofessional. We'll give our $$$$$ to someone else.

I received 3-4 bids from contractors on Angie's list. Bald eagle wasn't the least expensive but I felt that based on reviews they were worth the price. They were punctual, professional and cleaned up after they were done. Our roof was completed in 3 days and we like how it turned out.

They did the work, and now after the snow has melted, there is a crack from one end to the other. The corner looks like it is breaking off too. The steps also look like they're pealing. I called them serveral times. They finally called me back and told me to get back in touch with him in the spring. He seemed like he was not going to be responsible for fixing it.

Kevin came over the same day I called, took one look and said the concrete job was way too big and complex. He then went on to tell me what some of the difficulties were and how to be careful when hiring someone to do the job. He even went beyond that by asking around and calling me back after he left to recommend someone who specializes in just the job I need done. Amazing service!!!

Kevin was prompt in coming out and giving us an estimate. We were agreeable with the fee and signed the contract. We were contacted as to their work date and start time and they arrived on schedule to begin work, Everything went well until the concrete was poured. The crew left without their payment I phoned Kevin and he said not worry about it. The next day I opened the front door and noticed that they workers had removed the pin from the pneumatic return on the screen door. That left the screen door loose and it moved pulling concrete up. I spoke with Kevin, he sent his foreman out who instead of making it smooth made it humpy. I again phoned Kevin who came out to see the problem. I told him what a great job they did on the drive but, how unhappy I was with the stoop. At that time I felt that he implied I had created the problem by opening the screen door (which I hadn't ) even after I pointed out his workers had not re secured the screen door. He reminded me that his contract stated after the concrete is poured they are not responsible, but he would again send his foremen out to rectify the problem. I'm still waiting for him to come and my screen door does not close properly due to the height of the concrete after the botched fix.

Never heard from this company. Since I gave this review, I have now heard from this company 5 times, discussing my scathing review and how it hurts his company. Even after I wrote him back after email #3, stating "this concludes our business" I got two more emails stating he had contacted me. but his dates are off compared to my schedule. Clearly, I wish I had never contacted this company.

Response from Bald Eagle Construction
I am the owner of Bald Eagle Construction (Kevin Wood). The most telling thing about the review given here to my company is for me to suggest that Angie's List Members click on "View all Reviews by this Member". Of the last (7) reviews given by this member, (5) have been "F"'s and (1) "D". Suffice it to say that we have incontrovertible (email) proof that our office emailed a proposal to the member within (1) week of our initial meeting. In our 14 years of giving estimates to Angie's List Members we have never had an experience or an exchange that compares to this one. I am just hoping we can go another 14 years without a similar one! :-)

They showed up on time, and completed the job quickly. The only complaint, they left significant construction debris in our garbage can, which is a big no-no in the city. Once we brought it to the attention of our contact, it was resolved and didn't happen again.

Their team came in and prepared the area with all the electrical and plumbing work necessary. They also insulated the room, sealed any openings, added tile to the floor and walls necessary, and installed everything including a tub, toilette, sink and stone counter and stone windowsills. Now my basement bathroom looks better than my master bathroom! They where very clean throughout the entire process. They put up tarps on the floor so they would not scratch my hardwood floors, they placed plastic covers over the adjacent room and other openings. They also made sure to finish the work before Thanksgiving!

My husband and I interviewed 4 different contractors. We were quite impressed with 3 of the 4. We ultimately chose Bald Eagle Construction because of the number of ratings (over 400!) they had on Angie?s List. I now know why they had so many good ratings. The foreman (Lech) walked us through the different options on the initial visit. We were provided with a clear proposal which was easy to read and understand. We needed more space in our home and the basement was the most logical place to accomplish this. We now have an extra bedroom and a rec room for the kids. Everyone is happy. Bald Eagle Construction did what they said, when they said, and for the amount of money they said they would. We highly recommend them.

Because it was late in the year (Nov in Chicago), the work was done over a longer period of time, but Bald Eagle kept in contact and let us know what the plan was for every stage of the work. I was given a call by them early due to another job that was not ready, and the work was started earlier than promised. The four layers of roofing required a great deal of work to remove, as long nails were used to hold down the upper layers of shingles. This made a standard roofing job much more lengthy and difficult. These guys busted their butts! Little break time was taken while at work. Clean up was very good, and with that much refuse shingles, it was a great deal of work. The site supervisor said the job was the most difficult roof they have done all year.
Description of Work: Removed 4 layers of roofing shingles, installed plywood, (on top of slats), installed shingles, gutters, and downspouts for a 100 year old house and single car garage. Hard working roofers!

This was a large project where we knew it would get bigger as we got into things. The tuck pointing was over due and there had been too many years where roofing material had been applied over existing roofing material without tearing off the existing roofing material. We also uncovered numerous shortcuts that the previous roofers, decades ago, took with the decking that needed to be remediated. The process was quick and relatively painless. The tuck pointing was first and took about here days including additional Unscoped work. This included scaffolding and accessing neighbors' property and I heard no complaints from neighbors. The roofing itself was only a couple of days with a follow up to apply the final coating after about a week. After the work was complete, we found some areas where they had missed the final coating and they can right back to fix that up. The tuck pointing process did leave some masonry dust that had gotten wet semi-permanently marking up our sidewalk. We haven't really done anything to clean it up and has started to erode off over the weeks since the work was completed. One note: the Forman, Remy, is incredibly talkative/verbose. Don't dismiss him as I nearly did in the beginning. My personal disposition finds that grating but I advise you strongly...listen to the details as he's speaking....he's leading up to something that you will want to know and need to hear. I found him helpful, very knowledgeable and invested in doing the best for me. That's great.
Description of Work: Major tuck pointing, new gutters, tear off the existing roof down to the roofing deck, replace major portions of damaged or missing roofing deck, and add insulation on a 1905 two-flat in east Lakeview/wrigleyville. Of note: they were neither, by far, our cheapest quote, nor the most interactive bidder. The bid was well written and all communication were clear and concise, and they came across as by far the most professional and most outwardly interested in doing the job the right way. My downstairs neighbor and I felt most comfortable with their style and demeanor and were galas to proceed with them. Price not being the only factor, they were the best bid and we're happy we chose them.

Kevin made an appointment and was very prompt and professional. He talked to me about options for expanding the driveway so it met our garage. He had a proposal to us the next day. My husband was concerned about how it would look as it wasn't a typical requested shape, Kevin drew out a plan so he could see what it would look like. The start date was 5 weeks out, we were pleased when they were able to get us in early. The crew showed up 7AM and went to work removing the old driveway. They finished in the same day. Were very professional. They had to remove quite a bit of old concrete and grade below, so the bobcat left a lot of soil ground into our remaining driveway that was difficult to remove. There was a one day delay because of rain, which was fine with us, they came and completed everything the next day. They came back 3 days later and removed the forms and sealed the driveway. We were pleased with the result and would use them again!
