I received estimates and quotes from four separate contractors - one of which didn't even show up, another who quoted me an astronomical $42,000 for the entire project (labor and materials only), and another who came by but never returned my inquiry for a quote. Tom is truly a professional and all around great resource that guided me through the entire project start to finish. Most importantly, he gave me several ideas and options which were totally outside the box from what I had in mind - and saved me money in the long run. Tom was punctual and on time every date we set and kept me in constantly communication and contact while working. Professionalism and industry knowledge are key here - as a homeowner who was going through the growing pains of a first time remodel I felt comfortable trusting Tom's expertise and advice along the way. Note my review is based off of 3-5 separate projects which were spaced out over a 16 month period.

When you read this company's description on Angie's List, you'll see: Our motto is "what would I do if it was my own home". J-sek Construction sticks to their motto. We had interviewed several companies before we selected this one. Tom J. the owner spent a lot of thought and time discussing and understanding our needs before presenting us with an estimate at a very reasonable and affordable price. While the work was being done, they were very respectful of our time and space (the job took about a month), always being on time and sometimes working extra hours to move things along. Tom communicated well, often coming up with better ideas on how to solve issues and to create the best space possible for us. He even did some extra work creating custom solutions for us which was much appreciated. At all times, this company's work exceeded our expectations. In fact, we almost feel like Tom is family now! We are having J-sek back again to update our bathrooms and are looking forward to the same quality service and outcome. We feel pretty lucky to have found J-sek and we would highly recommend this company to anyone who is looking for quality and reliability.

Tom from J-Sek construction was excellent, as always.  The project was a nightmare, but not due to J-Sek construction.  Tom from J-Sek performed their usual quality work and Tom went above and beyond duty in trying to mitigate the issues brought on by the cabinet & counter dealers (Scavolini in the Merchandise Mart -- I will be wrtiing a scathing review separately).

Tom was timely and trustworthy. His pricing was very fair and he was a pleasure to work with. We were extremely pleased with the quality of his work and would recommend his services.

Tom came later at nights and during the day, the project was an investment rental property and time was not a concern. I had some electric issues come up and he recommended someone who did that at a great price as well. All in all it was a success.

I've actually worked with J-Sek for several projects. The first was a remodelling project on a rental property and that included updating the basement and a complete remodel of the kitchen. Most recently J-Sek performed a basement remodel in my house. It was a pretty big project, as the basement was completely unfinished and hadn't been touched in years (read: seriously outdated plumbing and electrical). I also had a pretty clear idea of the style I wanted, which was anything but a cookie cutter basement remodel. Tom, the owner, worked really closely with me both to understand exacatly what I was after, and to try and get the results I was looking for. Elements included a metal rolling door for the bathroom (that Tom basically custom fabricated), sub-contracting out the work to produce a stained concrete floor, incorporating a shoji screen system for the storage spaces and essentially reworking a cable railing system to keep my costs down (compared to purchasing an 'out of the box' system).
I have been really pleased with the quality of work from J-Sek, but also with the professionalism and reliability. Now I am trying to get on their schedule for a bathroom remodel!

From our first meeting with J-Sek Construction until the completion of the job it was a great experience. The entire job went smoothly and with outstanding results! We won't hesitate to use J-sek again for future projects!

We hired J-SEK to take out our old, round wood railing and install a new, more contemporary stainless steel railing. I found a railing I liked on-line and showed the pictures to Tom, the contractor. He then came up with a design, using the product I selected from the on-line store.
The process he went through to design the railing was above and beyond what I would expect from a contractor. He visited the website, called the company, and figured out how this railing system worked. He then used this information to determine all the necessary pieces for our very complicated stairwell. The biggest obstacle he had to get around was that there is a change in the vertical plane of the wall. He ordered the materials (without adding any cost to the railing materials) and had them shipped directly to him for review prior to installation. He had the entire design figured out before stepping foot in our home to do the work.
The wall required additional support for this new railing, so J-SEK proposed opening the wall up and doing so. After the wall was put back together, the railing went in without any hiccups. It looks amazing....so clean and perfect! So glad we decided to move forward with this project!

We've had many home improvements project done on our house over the last 15 years. Let me start by mentioning how refreshing it was to have a contractor at your house everyday, let alone ON time.
Our basement project started with demo work by J-SEK. They did a great job ripping everything out in a timely manner and kept things pretty clean when hauling out all the debris. They even installed temporary retaining walls that sealed off the mess from the rest of our home. They brought numerous obstacles to our attention and proposed ways to solve some of our biggest issues. J-SEK made recommendations along the way on things like better insulation, more outlets and special cable runs for our home theater system. We moved forward with getting the HVAC issues fixed along with leveling out the floors, per their recommendation also. All aspects of the demo and prep for reconstruction went smoothly and efficiently.
Next, we brought in a interior designer to plan the space. The designer drew some very simple plans and handed those over to J-SEK for construction. There was a lot of coordination that needed to take place in order to make everything in the basement fit just right, so we were concerned about the logistics and communication. J-SEK took all the necessary measures to ensure that the basement was built as drawn. The few small problems we did run into were handled professionally and with little to no down time on the project.
The end result is a contemporary basement that we are more than happy with!
