I exchanged a few Emails with them in the following days to discuss sealing the gaps in the attic. They discouraged me from doing so because they felt that the house shouldn't get any tighter.
I was very pleased with their service and their willingness to engage in an email conversation afterwards. I would use them again.
Was not impressed with finishing however. They were forced to take up some wood flooring in one area and did a poor job of replacing it. As part of the job they also had to cut several holes in the drywall. They cut all the way to the baseboard making the repair much more difficult without removing the baseboard. The crew was thinking finish quickly not necessarily the work I would be doing to clean up afterwards.
I would not hire them for finishes but they did a good job on the insulation.
It took a few weeks to get an appointment scheduled; I had to call a couple of times to follow up. I assume this is a busy time of year for this kind of work. When the guys came to do it, they were in and out pretty quickly (all told it took maybe 6 hours?) and I did not have to leave the house. They laid out tarps to try to keep from getting my floors messy, which I appreciated! On the other hand, they also moved furniture without moving it back and put a bunch of either foam or caulk canisters to soak in my bathtub without asking me, leaving a pretty gross ring around it for me to scrub. There were also lots of small nails left on the floor near a door that was weather-stripped. Glad I wear shoes to go to my basement or this could have been a nasty surprise.
All told, I'm glad I got the insulation done and I hope to see a difference in my gas bill next month. The house does feel less drafty, though I couldn't really say it feels warmer because we've had such extremely low temperatures in the week since the work was done. I wish that the workers had cleaned up after themselves better, but it wasn't anything I couldn't handle.
On top of that, there was an issue with our 2-year old boiler that really seems to have been coincidental. DNR had had to turn the thermostats down to run the blower door test to show air-leakage improvement. When we turned the thermostat back up, we didn't initially notice that the boiler hadn't come back on. That evening, several hours later, with the house at about 60 and a predicted low in the single digits, we called DNR to see what might have happened. They sent Nick, the HVAC manager, out immediately. He looked things over and ultimately sanded the spark-plug (not actually a spark plug, but something similar) to clear it of carbon build-up, and that did the trick. Nothing they had done would have created a rapid carbon build-up, so it was either completely coincidental or maybe having the basement get cooler during the blower-door test had meant that a soot-covered part no longer worked. I was present for all of this (and had already done some troubleshooting myself) so I'm confident this was the issue and that it didn't have anything to do with their work.
At any rate, they did this for free, which got our boiler running and our house warming up. In the course of this, we realized there was water on the floor - again unrelated to their work. We had a fuse blow a couple weeks before, and it seems to have blown the water pump necessary on a modern high-efficiency boiler. It was now nearly 10:00 pm on the Friday after Christmas. Nick rushed to Home Depot to beat their 10:00 closing, picked up a pump and installed it. Far beyond the call of duty.
We really appreciated the quality work and the attention they gave us in a tough (cold) situation that turned out not to have been their fault. We will be using them again to do similar work on a 2-flat we own.
I would hire them again to do other projects.
I liked their services and will use the same in future.
