The plumber came out and looked at the leak in the floor below, which fortunately was an unfinished basement. Then, the plumber looked at our master bathroom and suggested that the leak may be coming from the bottom two rows of shower stall tiles. After the plumber left, we put caulking on the sides of all those tiles and the leak stopped! This will give us time to get the shower tiles professionally replaced by another firm. A quick assessment and worth the money spent.
"The house had been uninhabited and unheated for 3-4 years. The heating contractor recommended us to the customer as he could not test the radiant heating system without the water being live. We were initially asked to turn the water back on to the house and assess the condition of the plumbing. The house had damage from what was believed to be raccoons living inside as well as water damage to floors and walls from ruptured radiant heat pipes. One of the toilets had even frozen and cracked. Our initial inspection found multiple leaks in the mechanical/laundry room behind the 38 year old water heater and washing machine. Until the damaged piping and water heater were replaced, the piping to the rest of the house could not be pressurized for leak testing. We provided a formal quote for this initial work and it was performed under a plumbing permit. Upon completion of the quoted work, the water was turned on and water began streaming through the kitchen ceiling. With the customer’s permission the ceiling was opened to expose a burst hot water line which we repaired at no charge. After turning the water back on again, another leak was observed and appeared to be coming from inside the second floor wall cavity above the kitchen cabinets. Since the heating contractor was scheduled for the following morning to address the lack of heat, we advised the customer to merely postpone investing in additional leak tracing/plumbing work until heat could be restored to the house and the plumbing protected. (Per heating contractor, new heating system installed mid-December). The customer was clear about having limited funds. Given the magnitude of the required restoration work and the fact a full re-pipe of the house might not be needed, we thought it in the customer’s best interest wait until the full scope of the other necessary and significant repairs had been understood before proceeding further. We believed we were being sensitive and cautious about adding a potentially unnecessary burden and are saddened to hear the customer interpreted it differently. We had hoped to be of further service after the heat had been restored to the home."
