Mr. Greenfield of GP International (AKA Archadeck of Lake Cook) and a franchisee of Archadeck abandoned the construction job after receiving 2/3 of the payment. I signed the contract on 8/4/10 and after a year and 4 months, he never actually showed up except to collect the payments. The foundation was finally poured in November of 2010 and the framing was done by a carpenter in May of 2011. Nothing but promises and no-shows until I contacted the Parent Company in June of 2011. Here is what happened: After the foundation was poured and the winter of 2011 passed and with a promise to finish by Christmas, nothing was done. I contacted Mr.Greenfield in February/March of 2011 and asked about completion come Spring. Again promises that he would compete the job starting April 1, 2011. Nothing happened except for more promises by phone and e-mail. As Spring and Summer came, we had a lot of rain. Little did I know that Mr. G had not arranged for the completion of the roof for the structure and had done damage and tearing out of the roof over the adjoining family room. It began to leak in my family room and many attempts to contact Mr. G went unanswered until he made more promises to get a roofer in. To make a long story short, significant damage was done to my family room and he never showed up to complete the roof or complete the job. In June of 2011, I contacted the parent company to find that Mr. G. had never submitted my contract to them as is their agreement. After many months of negotiation, they agree to finish the project for monies owed. Turns out, he had several contracts out there that he had not submitted. They fired him. In addition, I found out that he never paid the two vendors who had done work on the job and told them that he couldn't pay them because I hadn't paid him-which was an out and out lie. Meanwhile, there is significant damage to my family room and it is known that all drywall, insulation, and flooring will need to be replaced. Mr. G. did have liability insurance and they contacted me around October, 2011 and began negotiations for the resolution of the repairs. After many months and many phone calls and arranging for two estimates, they sent a release for me to sign which included "depreciation" of $1500.00 deducted from the settlement.. Even though I understand the concept of "depreciation", I am outraged that I have to come up with more money. You might wonder why I did not file suit. Lawyers cost money and even if I went to small claims court, he would not be obligated by the legal system to pay. If I won the suit and he didn't pay, I would have to hire an attorney to collect. He has remained untouchable even as a dishonest man who took money with what I think was no intention to finish the job. I am 65 years old and I went to my savings to do this project in order to add to the value of my home-which has decreased significantly. In reality, the law does not protect the consumer. I am assuming that he is out there operating under a different name. I think that he owes me at least whatever monies it takes to resolve the issue of the damages. I joined Angie's List for the specific purpose of filing a complaint against him. I have also filed with the Better Business Bureau. Words cannot express the stress and time off from work to manage all of these complications and the toll it has taken on me. It would be insult to injury to have to come up with additional funds to repair damage that he is responsible for. Thank you for the opportunity to take action in some way regarding this atrocity.
Description of Work: This job was abandoned by the contractor who was a franchisee for Archadeck. His name is Jeff Greenfield. I signed the contract on 8/4/10 for the construction of a 16 x 20 screened porch with a stamped concrete floor and adjoining brick paver patio. The job was never completed by Mr. Greenfield. He did require 1/3 of the money at signing of the contract and another 1/3 upon "breaking ground" when the foundation was poured. After receiving the two payments he disappeared (with the exception of promises by e-mail) until May 2011 at which time he sent out a single carpenter to do the framing of the structure. Nothing further but promises until I contacted the parent company, who, after many months of negotiation, completed the job in October. They did a wonderful job. Mr. Greenfield has not been heard from since May of 2011.
